macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

Same problem here. Also on iMac27 late 20009 and 10.12.1. On one occasion I didn't do anything after the freeze and when I came back an hour or so later, it had rebooted itself and I sent the report to Apple. Hopefully it will be resolved shortly. I have 4-5 freezes a day. I've cleared the cache in Safari with no success and now I'll try to clear the history to see if this will make any difference.

And if I may add, I've only experienced these freeze conditions when I'm in Safari and scrolling.

Same problem. Tried all the "fixes" that have been recommended (that I understood) with no luck. My iMac froze at least once a day ... always while in Safari and scrolling. I switched out my wireless Apple mouse with another wireless Apple mouse and I've experienced no freezes the last three days. The wireless mouses were purchased at different times; but, obviously, look the same.

Try creating a new user and use it for one day. See if it helps.

I have this same issue on my MacBook Pro.

I have an iMac mid-2010 model, this issue only ever occurs for me when running safari, got to the point where it was happening 2-3 times per day, only resolution was re-boot. This has been happening in El Capitan and Sierra.

I have installed chrome and not used safari for 2 weeks and it has not happened since. So whatever the cause, safari is the common thread for me.

nigel218: I have never experienced the problem in El Capitan, hence me going back to that. Do you know of any way to discern the differences between the 2 OS'es? Something like creating a delta-comparison between the 2? Might prove useful to determine what's causing the issue (on my machine, at least).

I had similar issues in ElCapitan but they were resolved by removing flash, taking off WebGl and google suggests. Those don't seem to do the trick here.

I was just advised that my capture data never made it to engineering because my computer crashed before it could send... well thats great.

so I have a new problem common to this....an unplanned shut down. I was typing an email in Outlook....screen just went dark (but not off, you could still see it had power) and then shut down.

I have random freezes except for the mouse and no random shut downs

please note...I do NOT have a late 2009 iMac...I have a LATE 2015 27" iMac...so what is common between my machine and everyone else?

I never had any issue on my late 2009 27" iMac with El Capitan or one of the earlier os´s.

Sierra ist the first os causing this problems.

Absolutely, same experience, never a problem with any other OS, ONLY SIERRA!

Can we please get this resolved ASAP as it is a pain, moving to Chrome has helped in that its only every couple of days now whereas with Safari it is 2 or 3 times per day

Can anyone confirm to me that TM actually creates a comple backup of the OS? If it's only partial, this method's still useless 😀

Two new items to report;

1. I cannot rename a file that is on the desktop. I must place it into a folder in order to change the name.

2. I have to log on to this thread with my password even though I have checked the box for my iMac (late 2009 OS SIerra 12.2.1 Safari 10.0.1 (12602.2.14.0.7) 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram NVDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) to remember my log-in password. I think I got all this stuff correct, although I cannot vouch for stuff I see on a Safari window.

Btw, I have been told by an Apple employee that I have known for a long time that I should always update whenever Apple issues an update in order to add the latest security to my iMac. So I do so. The last two updates have beeen horrendous. It appears I am serving as an unpaid beta-tester for Sierra. I wonder if the Sierra mountain range is upset at Apple for issuing a Mac OS that has been suspiciously incomplete in it's advertized compatibility with iMac Late 2009 and forward?

I ahve 2x 2009 iMacs and they both do this. It's definitely video driver. If music is playing it continues to play. It's not related to bluetooth because i have wired keyboards and mice. It only happens when scrolling web pages. it's not related to webgl because i swicthed that off and it doesn't ask for fb pages yet it happens there.

I am unfortunately still experiencing these crashes on my Late 2009 iMac (Radeon 4850).

I am going to try the latest Safari Technology Preview (18) and will update here if/when it crashes.
