Sierra killed my Canon EOS Utility

Hi,

If anyone at Apple is paying attention, listen up!

You built a computer empire on graphics ability, design, photograph (remember when the majority of you 3% marketshare were arty/designer types banging on to their normal friends and colleague how great Macs were??) - Please include Canon in you development work on new OS, Sierra has killed (an albeit third party) application that people use daily in work, commerce and hobbies Canon EOS Utility no longer works in the final release of Sierra - It worked on the betas until very recently - Now it opens, but doesn't recognise EOS digital bodies!!! No more remote shooting, no more instant 'retina' reviews on screen - honestly I can get that on XP which I have on a partition - WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING AT????!

What tweak was made at the last minute that broke this - why wasn't Canon given a chance to fix this so it could be patched on Sierra launch day?????? What was the huge problem that suddenly appeared too late to allow Canon to look at it? I'm sure Canon would love to closedown it's entire MAC software division and save a reasonable sized fortune in the process - Why give them a reason to do that and tell all their loyal photographers, you know what, we only write Manufacture certified tools and drivers for Windows???

Seems you've also stopped most of the PIXMA printers from working too - You cannot lay the blame solely at Canon's door, you've been developing this OS release for at least a year and probably 3 years in some form - Allow your peripherals partners to keep up?

You don't continue to be the best by not playing well with others.

That chart says Utility 2 works over wifi which seem absolutely wrong in my case at least. I haven't been able to get EOS Utility to load at all. I just get error messages. I have no problem downloading photos with various other programs over USB but Canon's EOS Utility won't even load since going to Sierra.

I purchased the 70D largely because it offer a wifi connection and that is now broken. The way I work, wifi makes things far more convenient for me and if anyone has a way to get this to work, please share.

I sold my MyFi card when I bought the 70D. That's looking like a mistake now. 😟

I use this in my day to day working life and have the same problems, I got in touch with Canon and got the following reply:

Thank you for your request and for contacting Canon.

In response to your enquiry regarding your EOS 700D and the use of EOS Utility on your MacOS 10.12 Sierra computer we have to inform you that there is not yet a version available for this OS system.

We would advise you to keep an eye on the support site during the coming weeks for the availability of the version for MacOS 10.12 Sierra.

Once again, thank you for contacting Canon. We trust this information has answered your enquiry. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact again.

Hi

I got exactly the same answer as Chris. I have the feeling that it is simply a standard answer that everybody gets..

I did not know about this problem only AFTER I installed Sierra and it is a bit risky to go back to the other OS.

I can upload my photos now via a USB card reader (IPhotos also does NOT work when I connect my Canon!).

But the biggest problem I have now is that I cannot use EOS Utility anymore for making macro photos. I used to connect my camera with USB cable to my Mac; opened EOS Utility and using live view I made photos with my computer. Perhaps anyone has a solution?

thanks

Since my original post, I've been digging at Canon on a regular basis and get pretty much stonewalled by customer services, who basically said your camera is old and we aren't interested.

Then after a wordy rant on response to another copy and paste reply I got this.......

Dear Mr Walton

Thank you for your inquiry regarding EOS Utility and macOS 10.12 Sierra. Canon is currently verifying operations of its software with macOS 10.12 (Sierra). We are actively researching this issue. I have included a link to the page on our Website concerning this issue. My name is Scott and I am with the Canon Customer Relations Department. We represent the Office of the President of Canon USA. I will contact you when we have additional information.

Sincerely,

Scott

Seems I may have gotten through, but 2 weeks on and no further news.... We'll see? I will of course update the thread if and when Canon fix the issue.

Since there have been a bunch of solutions posted above,

1. I have no issue getting images of the camera, I have very fast CF card reader and a built in SD reader for my EOS 1

2. Its the loss of long term timer and interval capture and remote adjustment of exposure, white balance, focus, etc that is my issue. I've contacted TetherTools who were very helpful, but the software they offer is also currently down due to Canon's issue (use the same background databases, apparently)

For the same reason, Eye-Fi cards are no good image upload no controls, plus the one I had for a compact point and shoot won't work on either EOS as the magnesium body blocks connection - I'll relay this to you all as it made me laugh - Because in one of my rants I mentioned to Canon that by killing USB support they were forcing me to explore expensive wireless transmission, they actually suggest Eye-Fi without actually reading why I needed tethering on the OP!! It felt like an automated response, like them the supermarket online shopping replace a lemon with lemon scented cleaner because the word 'lemon' set off the algorithm.

This isn't Apple's fault (don't get me wrong - i have *Never* had Apple close a filed bug i've filed as fixed, i often consider their practices atrocious.) -- this specific thing is the M.O. of Canon.

The same thing happened with at least the Yosemite release as well (Canon has ample opportunity to work with the developer previews, does not, the OS comes out breaking the EOS Utility and then Canon plays catch-up.)

Hi,

Seems all the bellyaching at and about Canon, was only partly justified!

The latest Sierra update has - Hey Presto - fixed the USB tethered functions in all there glory, remote adjustment of settings, timer and interval shutter release, all now magically working again.

Apple, what did you do and then fail to acknowledge as your fault - Canon get some major stick for not keeping their utilities up to date, but with your co-operation all this could and should have been avoided!

Canon I'm sorry!

Hi. Flowers. Thanks for the reply. Sadly, our EOS is so old it has a CF card, not an SD card. Which means the built-in card reader in the Mini will not work for my Canon.

And, I am beginning to suspect that ANY card reader will not work now that Sierra has been installed on my computer. In the last 10-14 days I tried downloading photos (using a card reader) from my mother's camera. (She passed several years ago and we are backing up her digital life.) That 'point-and-shoot' camera's card was unreadable using the card reader. (I didn't make the connection between problems with the EOS and problems with the point-and-shoot camera until about 1 AM this morning. I'm beginning to suspect they are tied to the same problem with Sierra.)

This is an annoying problem and I hope future patches will fix it. For now, I will have to rely on the kindness of strangers ... erm, relatives ... to download photos. However, if anyone else has ideas, I'd love to hear them!
