I answered my own question as solved, but the problem returned, and I cannot un-mark it as solved. I needed to create this new unsolved discussion in order to attract the attention of Apple engineers.

I have never had any Logitech software installed and I have the intermittent freezing problem. So it must be wider than simply LCC. This is really hard to diagnose since it only happens intermittently - maybe 2-3 times per day. So the whole, boot into safe mode and run in safemode all day long to see if it fixes the problem is really not a viable solution. Save mode cuts out too many things that I need to actually do my work.

So I keep watching, waiting and hoping.

The random freezes keep coming. Installed the latest Logitech Options today, no change. Freezes with or without Logitech software. I'm actually suspecting iTunes more and more.

I display the Plays column in my playlists and whenever a freeze occurs one or more of the songs I just played aren't marked as unplayed. After the last freeze/hard restart a few minutes ago the last 18 minutes or so of the last songs I played in iTunes weren't marked as played. So it seems something happens and/or stops working in iTunes (or connected to) before a freeze actually occurs. Never this long before, though.

Had the spinning beach ball freeze on 2016 iMac running El Capitan daily for months. Work computer, with Trend Micro running. Freeze would happen under different applications/conditions. Ran Etrecheck and Onyx, looked at crash logs but nothing obvious came up. Updated to Sierra. Same problem. Long story short, I stopped using Adobe reader for pdf documents (using Preview instead) and have not had a crash since (a few months). From reading all the comments about these crashes, my guess is that what worked for me may not work for others. By the way, my MacBook Air with either El Capitan or Sierra never had this problem.
