i had the same problem (iphone 6, ios 10.0.2, whatsapp 2.16.11), tried everything i found on the internet but nothing worked. i contacted whatsapp support a few days ago and today i received a mail telling me that they've released a new version (2.16.12) and asked me to try again. i deleted the app, installed the latest version, tried to restore (took a while, be patient) and IT WORKED! hope it works for you guys as well, good luck!

Hey, I checked the AppStore like you said. And there was an update to whatsapp. Tried reinstalling the app. Ran the restore. It ran for a few minutes. and entered the optimizing whatsapp page and again showed me the screen Whatsapp had trouble reading my chat history with a 'Begin Recovery' button. I click on that, its the same circle. It says theres a backup of 1.55 GB found on iCloud and theres a restore button. Yet again it gets back to the Begin Recovery Page.

I am helpless.

Problem finally solved. After 2 weeks of being whatsapp-less, contacting multiple people at both Apple and Whatsapp and considering whether to just give up and forget about the chat history, Whatsapp finally released an update and after updating I had all my chat history including all the messages I've missed in the last 2 weeks. I hope you're all able to do the same🙂

Just sorted the same problem on my phone as well, but cured it. I fixed my problem of Whatsapp being stuck on finishing 99% by deleting the app all together and re downloading and installing the app again, after signing in again I still got the icloud option, on downloading all my messages from the cloud it performed as it should and went straight through the restore including the 99% finishing. All working now, and I expect the cause was an older copy of Whatsapp being stored on icloud, and when I had to do a phone restore because of the apple problem of being stuck on the apple logo loop, which also ended up as being due to an after market screen being fitted, and was sorted by disconnecting the battery and removing the screen, connecting to comp and doing an update/restore from itunes. (using an old cracked but working screen helped). I hope this info might help some of you out there.

Hi All,

after struggling with this for a day:

1. delete the app from your phone

2. connect the phone to your computer and open iTunes

3. Download and install the app with iTunes

4. run WhatsApp while still connected to your computer and iTunes running.

5. choose restore in WhatsApp and the restore finishes in a couple of seconds...

don't know whats the logic behind this restore from iCloud while connected to the computer... but it works (for me at least...)

hope it will help someone.
