Mail unusable since upgrade to Sierra

When I first upgraded my iMAC to Sierra (10.12), Mail would crash every time I tried to select the "Sent" folder. Most other folders could be accessed fine; a few would also cause Mail to crash. Re-installed Sierra, no luck.

Today, Mail started crashing on a few other folders. Then, finally, it crashed altogether and will no longer re-open; every time I try to open the app I get a "Mail quit unexpectedly" dialog and dump. I believe this is the most pertinent information:

Crashed Thread: 6 Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-qos

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)

Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Once again I re-installed Sierra, but still cannot open Mail at all. Any thoughts?

Just to make sure you're following the right path:

1) Go to Finder;

2) Click on the Go dropdown menu while holding down the Option key (this toggles the "Library")

3) --> Application Support

4) --> Address Book

Move this to your desktop, or the Trash.

i feel your pain. I thought it was maybe just me and / or the BT Infinity line i have to my house. But having now installed....outlook (shocking turn of events!) for mac, my email is back up and running again.

well done Apple - by upgrading the OS, your in house mail app is unusable resulting in me moving to a product from your direct competition. good move. one word : testing??!! :-/

To the OP or anyone else suffering, i realise this is not a fix to the problem, but it is a workable solution until Apple resolve the root cause (suspected to be macOS Sierra).

When Sierra Apple Mail crashes instantly and consistently with crash report on say 20 consecutive opening attempts, I then run Memory Clean 2 (sometimes twice) which allows for successful opening of Mail for hours before crashing with report again. This works for my iMac until Apple fixes the problem.

YMMV, but removing the entire folder named "Mail" in the Library folder (while holding option with a finder window open, click "Go" from the menu and from the dropdown menu, select "Library") seems to be the remedy for whatever was wrong with my box. This seems to be a problem that is either located in different locations or multiple problems with similar symptoms. I tried many if not all solutions on the interwebs. It has been about 10 days thus far and no subsequent crashes of Apple Mail. Good luck!

Thank You Very Much! Removing the Mail Folder was the ticket! Now I am looking for a remedy for SOUND which no longer works after upgrading to Sierra. 😟

Com.apple.mail.savedstate does not exist in my system Library/Containers....

Did you get advice on rebuilding your mail post Sierra install? I found your post and held down the SHIFT key which got me back into Mail but I'm looking for how to fix it permanently now...

Look at Sharkwood's post above. Although it's counter-intuitive, if you rebuild your address book it's likely your mail problem will be resolved. That's what did it for me.
