How are "Moments" defined in Photos for Mac?

Having used the "Photos" album view (top left) to label descriptions and locations, I can see the benefits of this view.

Is this the same as "Moments" in iOS? It certainly seems to have the same purpose.

Also, what are the parameters to define the "moments" on my Mac? It seems to group photos by time and/or location but I can't work out exactly what rules it is applying (and this becomes relevant where I might want to group photos together)

Do you have "Summarize Photos" enabled in the Photos Preferences > General?

This will display less photos in the Moments, and the gps may appear larger.

I didn't so have now selected it and thought that would break up the moments but sadly not

I can only conclude the rule which defines the distance between photo locations before a new Moment is created is higher than 120 miles!

What did you mean by "gps may appear larger"?

Having played around with amending the time of photos, it looks like a new moment is created if there is a time gap of more than 5 hours

So i have photos from 1am, taken at an airport, and photos taken 30-odd miles away at 11am - and they're in the same moment.... maybe not? frustrating!!
