Deleting songs on ipod? possible?

Access iTunes, go thru and select songs in your Music Library that you do not want and hit your delete key. You can highlight a group of songs by holding the 'ctrl' key and your left mouse key and then hit delete key.

Once you have deleted the songs that you did not want, just sync your iPod.

They wanted to delete songs from their iPod but not their iTunes library (unless I am mistaken). The method you are giving them is deleting it from their iTunes Library. If they did that they would no longer have the songs unless they made sure to have backups of them.

Sorry about that. Then, I guess they can create a unique playlist and setup their iPod just to sync whatever playlist they wanted instead of syncing all.

They can set their iPod to manual disk mode to avoid an autosync all together and to be able to pick and choose what goes on their iPod...and whenever they have the urge to remove a song or two they can do so with a click and delete without affecting their iTunes Library at all.

That is about what I stated, but in less tech terms. Hopefully, the creator of this discussion can see the input that has been provided and they can base what to do on the feedback. Possibly, they may have solve the problem on their own. Ain't that great.

No. You must use iTunes to manage your iPod. You can delete tracks "on-the-fly".

To remove a song from your iPod but not off iTunes you will need to arrange your iPod manually.

This is the only way. Otherwise if you "uncheck" boxes in iTunes to disable on your iPod, you will disable them in iTunes.

So manual arrangement... get used to it!

Why? Manual management stinks.
I use autosync and I control exactly what goes on my iPods very well, thank you.

Select the iPod in iTunes. Click on the Music tab.
Select Sync music and Sync selected playlists.
Select the playlists you want to go onto your iPod.
Add or delete from the playlists then sync the iPod.

And chris, the user didn't ask how to only get some playlists, they asked for deletion of songs from their ipod with preservation on iTunes, which the only way to do this without interfering with current iTunes settings is to manually add and remove them.

You can play the song when "unchecked" by double clicking on it. You can play it by highlighting it and selecting the "contols/play" menu.

What method of playing the song is disabled exactly?

Okay. My suggestion leaves it in iTunes and removes it from the iPod.

that is what my suggestion d which the only way to do this without interfering with current iTunes settings is to manually add and remove them.
If he is does not have "Manually manage music" ticked, he's gonna have to "interfere" with the iTunes settings.
Since he has more music in iTunes than on his iPod, iTunes has already created a playlist to fit his iPod and selected that to sync.
Doing it my way, he doesn't even have to change ANY settings in iTunes.
Just add/delete from the selected playlist.

Though your method works, it is not how to truly "delete" a song from your iPod.
Why isn't it "truly" how to do it?
When I delete it from a synced playlist, it stays in the iTunes library and it is removed from the iPod.
