iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Made a Genius Bar appointment. Confirmed by iPhone 6 battery was "healthy" (>85%). They told me there is nothing they can do as far as a no-charge or discounted replacement, and to wait for next software upgrade.

Upgraded to iOS 10.2. Since the upgrade, not as may "30% shutdown" events. However, the battery appears to be draining extremely fast. Just tonight, at 4pm I received a "Your battery is low" message. Battery at 18%, with minimal iPhone usage through the day. 4 or 5 text messages, no calls, no browsing. No other active app usage.

When I got home from work, I plugged in my iPhone and the battery level immediately jumped to 47%? I unplugged the iPhone immediately after that, and the battery remained at 47%?

Obviously an issue here.

As I said to a previous post, I replaced my battery, since I couldn't wait any longer.

Having support to execute the diagnostic, showed that my battery was "healthy", but installing app "battery life" showed something different, a battery completely beaten with a capacity under 800mah.

Now I charged my phone at 100% before going to sleep and it kept the charge, eight hours later. What conclusions should I make? Is it a bug or the batteries are spend after two years and with a combination of a power hungry iOS are rendered completely useless?

I am not trying to underestimate you or your sources, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

Using a 6 plus. Never experienced the battery problem while I was on 10.1.

As soon as i updated to 10.2, my phone started shutting down at 40-50% battery remaining. I can't always have access to a charger while i'm outside so it's quite inconvienient. Apple please roll out an update which fixes this. I'm not willing to pay to repair this or replace my battery to solve the issue caused by ios 10.

I've always been an Apple supporter and even a fanboy, but I've experienced so many problems recently that I'm tempted to switch. My 6 plus is almost 2 years old now and its also experiencing the "Touch disease" problem which has affected numerous other people. In addition, lets not forget the popular "bendgate" which affected thousands of 6 plus users.

I feel that the Iphone 6/plus really isn't a well tested product. I will continue to voice this issue to Apple and other users but, ultimately, my next smartphone will probably not be from Apple.

I have an iPhone 6 running 10.1.1 and noticed similar behavior. Since updating to 10+, the battery has been super sensitive to cold. Even when already at 50%+ charge and connected to a battery pack in the cold, it would still tell me to plug in until I put my phone against my body to warm it up and then it would jump to the charge I expect to see. I actually have only noticed the instant battery shut down (except sporadically and rarely throughout the life of my phone) when using my phone in cold temps. Could it be that the iOS update merely jives with a change in weather? I cannot recall this behavior in my first two winters with the phone, though. (Purchased Nov 2014).

Still no update. I have an old Iphone 5 that I haven't updated and also my Iphone 6 that's running on 10.2. Decided to try them both out I charged both phones to 100% and took them with me to work. I left home @7am by 7:20am without use the 6 was at 86% the 5 was still at 100%. I purposely used all apps maps, facebook, instagram etc on the 5 still by 10am it was at 92%. I can't even get 4 hours out of my 6 but the 5 literally last all day without being charged . I can't listen to music, browse the net or anything and it still drains the battery like crazy on the 6. After reaching out to them on Twitter I got the response everyone else is getting 🙂 Apple says my battery is consumed on a 2year old phone but the 5 which is 4 years old is fine hmmm I call bs. No response from Apple yet really disappointed.

Very similar issue here with multiple iPhone 6 & 6s'. We have 6 iPhone 6 or 6's in our family, 4 of the 6 are experiencing the problem of frequent shutdowns from 30 or 40% life. Plug into charger and phone comes back. Problem is exacerbated with any cold - even in 45 degree weather the phone will shut down. Very very frustrating. We have been long time iPhone users but this is unacceptable. I have an old iPhone 5 that I have started using when going skiing because it doesn't shut down in the cool temperature (even in an interior pocket the 6 will often fail). Apple's quality has notably declined. Unless Apple addresses this issue, they will have lost us as customers when it becomes time to upgrade.

But it seems everybody talks on the same problem - so the drain problem hasn't been solved in 10.2, clearly.

Can somebody of you probably check the crashreporter logs ?

All of my drain events were recorded to log-files.

I hope for 10.2.1, as beta2 is in test period.

This latest IOS update is UNACCEPTABLE to battery life. Both my wife and I are having to charge our phones (6s & 6+) twice a day! Have supported Apple for over 8 years starting with the Iphone3...will seriously consider our next phone purchase.

I had minimum 2 day battery life before GeniusBar update my phone from iOS10.0.? to 10.0.2(14A456) for a ApplePay issue.

Now I can't even know if I will be able to do 8 hour and I have the unexpected shut down when battery is below 40%.

Most of time around 30% but in some case around 10%.

Thank's Apple to brick our 1000$cad phone as a battery pack depending device!

After 3 iPhone, 1 iPod, 3 iPod Touch & 1 iPad, I seriously thinking to change to android with the Google Pixel XL...

Indeed, just today I had a proof that many users just have no clue what's going on and, based on past Apple reliability, they assume something's gone wrong on their end.

I was chatting with a friend and asked how his iPhone was doing. He said he'd been using cheap chargers so he messed up the battery because since some days ago it went crazy (with all very well known symptoms). He said he was going to buy a new charger today. He would be very upset when he realised he spent some 50 euros with something that won't fix the problem.

I truly believe this represents what some of those "millions" of satisfied users might be thinking about their expensive bricks. 😕

Totally agree on this. Exactly my thinking. I interviewed on Christmas all relatives present....it turned out: Out of 6 iphone users 4 have exactly this problem. Of course nobody was aware of what's going on...thinking and considering to buy a new phone soon. The two guys without problem have kind of new models. None of the fit phones was older than half a year and they do run already ios 10.2.

Nevertheless I think "Belisarius" hit the nail at least with one assumption. This is clearly a hardware battery problem (I was thinking different at the beginning here). The battery quality of the latest generations *****, that's it! I believe software updates just unfolding the bad battery condition, because new functions eating more battery etc. If it would be a software problem only of ios 10.2 or some earlier 10 versions we would see here also "a lot more" people with brand new iphones....but we don't, right? Most of the iphones are about 2 years, one and a half old...A little mystery are just minor feedbacks of people reporting the drain problem persists after changing the battery. But to be honest this can have a lot of different reasons again...damaged the phone/battery during the fix process, got tricked etc.

But the million happy iphone users Belisarius is talking about are mostly the owners of new phones and not so old ones....Than the owners of older models with a clearly better quality. The battery draining issue is widespread though, no doubt. Apple's luck is that most of the people think it's their fault, eating up the frustration and just hold out till they are going to buy a new phone.

My battery is two months old, it has been changed when 10.1 arrived, phone has been draining like crazy.

It still drains like crazy, changing battery didn't fix anything. Apparently phone doesn't go to standby, even if it looks like it, as phone drains on standby like it was in use. I can get maybe 15h max from a full charge.

Funny is that I'm on 0,0 - 0,5% wear according to battery life, and when I take a look at battery details, standby time reads like 13 days...

Also, phone is after DFU restore, set as new, everything is off and I have three apps installed..

I don't think it is a battery issue per se. Everyone talks about bad batteries, but it is the OS glitch of some sort.

People get a new battery and for some it fixes the problem, for some the problem persists.

My thought then is that merely taking the battery out can help some, but with the OS glitch present in the phone after a battery swap, then for some people a battery swap may not help.

My daughters iPhone 5 worked all day every day for a day and 1/2 without needing to be charged.

Upgraded to 10.1.1 and it started draining very fast and shutting itself off with 30-40% showing.

Upgraded to 10.2 the issue got worse.

Now it shuts off in about 5-10 minutes. You can almost watch the Battery percentage go down like a timer. Then Poof!

Interesting thing was that I factory restored her phone and for 1 time the issue seemed to be solved. The phone lasted for 36 hours. I finally put her flashlight on to run the phone out as part of my attempt to re-calibrate the battery.

But after a couple of times of trying to re-calibrate the battery the quick drain and shutdowns started all over again.

If the battery was completely gone, how would it function for 30+ hours at any point?

I know of zero rechargeable batteries which are apparently only capable of working 5-10 minutes suddenly being able to power something for 30+ hours.
