iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

I agree and argued this- often unsuccessfully- that a fast solution is better than long-term hope. Also, some people are tied financially and find it an expensive troubleshooting step. Paikinator replaced his battery at an Apple authorized service point. Some places e.g. Best Buy may have no restrictions on replacing that battery. If you read online, you will discover that a lot more is being done than just people posting here. Every story of successful resolution through a battery replacement is serving a purpose. First, helps the user regain phone functionality. Secondly, it is data: that a battery swap resolved the issue 100%, and that the battery may have been prematurely defective. Reading online, tech journalists are digging really deep. They are frustrated, concerned, and smell a major story.

The reason why a genuine Apple battery may be worth for you, specifically (vs 25$ 3d party) is that, in the case of a potential recall, your more recent phone may render you eligible for a future 80$ reimbursement. OEM also tend to be higher quality.

Background for those that don't want to read previous posts - My 1.5 year old 6 had no issues prior to upgrading. After upgrade it would shutdown between 30-40% battery. When plugged into power it would come back at the same percentage it had prior to rapid drain/shutdown. Apple support tested my battery and said it is good. Per their request I backed up and restored. Battery life was better on wifi (still not as good as before), pretty poor battery life when cellular only though no rapid shutdown had occurred yet.

Update - Today I left the house with 95% battery to drive to work. 15 min into my ride, the battery dropped to about 20%. I wanted to see it shutdown, so I opened a few apps that tend to drain battery quickly. The battery dropped to 15% and stayed there for the next 11 min even with all those apps running. At a traffic light a minute or so from the office I turned on google maps and told it to send me a grocery store. This was to add to the drain. At the office, my battery still remained at 15%. I took a screenshot at 1:36pm EST. Then plugged into car charger. At 1:37PM about 30 seconds later my battery jumped to 50%. I also took a screenshot. I've PMd my support contact on twitter.

I tried to upload my screenshots here, but they were not accepted despite being small enough, the proper type and not having any weird characters in the name. If folks really want to see them I can upload and post a weblink to elsewhere.

Try doing a full wipe...I did that and think that fixed it for me...I'm using a 6S though...I don't think its background refresh issues either...my phone kept doing this until I did a full clean wipe and started over...I have had the issue since...I'm on my 4th full recharge now.

If you have had the issue since, then why are you suggesting this even worked?

Direct quote from Apple Support: We’ve heard reports of the issue you're describing, and it’s currently under review. We don’t have a solution at this time, but recommend that you keep your device up-to-date using Software Update.

At this point I have the choice of:

$90 to replace a battery which has worked for 9 of you. (If I can even get this done since battery tests fine.)

Pay $300 to buy out the lease on this phone and get an Android.

Carry around a battery pack because I have a $800 device that I can't trust.

All of these options stink and I can't believe Apple has left me in this situation.

"$90 to replace a battery which has worked for 9 of you. (If I can even get this done since battery tests fine.)" Two days ago I found out that a gf's coworker had just been turned down for a battery replacement at an Apple store, as his out of warranty 6 tested fine for battery. His work at a hospital makes it difficult to step away with a phone only to find it shut off all the time. It was the first time I heard of paying customers turned down. I recommended an Apple authorized OEM service center (non-Apple store) where he took and they replaced it in minutes, problem is gone. Am fluent in three languages and also read two others (italian and spanish). reports of battery replacement succeeding are in several languages on the web. It is recent though that paying customers are reporting being turned down following a 'fine' test. Usually, outside a warranty, customers have more flexibility at a Genius Bar,e specially if they pay. I have my own opinion why this maybe happening, will keep it with myself and help the post remain posted. However, several authorized centers may be available to you in your city and they would be able to replace it.

The silver lining for the 90$ is that if it works, your time consuming issue is gone. Some people have been waiting for months since their shutdowns commenced. Also, an OEM swap may keep you in line for a potential reimbursement/credit if there is a future recall. If it does not work, you still have a reimbursement option and you can come here and vent it on me, call me names, i will not push back.

If a new battery, plse remember (the repair center should know) to do a simultaneous reset so the drivers/iOS numbers sync with the replacement battery's controller.

cheers

do you also count people, whose phones are still b*tchin'? I was just curious after updating to 10.2, if the problem persisted. Started a resource-eater game to drain the battery, then waited. At 20% i received the low battery message, and as soon as the battery reached 18%, the phone shutted off, no warnings, nothing on this bloody world. I then had no *** chance to give it enough power from my PC's USB to turn it on (endless loop: apple-logo, black screen, vibrating, apple-logo, etc, etc.), only the 230V plug was sufficient to turn on the phone, when it showed, that i still have 18% of battery left. Battery capacity 100%, lifetime from 100 to ~20% is OK, 10-20 hours, depending on usage, but the last 20% is critical... this is now getting very, VERY ridiculous...

The coding argument you mentioned earlier was deleted i guess. Saw nowhere any apple statement to that effect. Also, owners having no issues contradicts the broad error point. The other issue is the 100% solution reached by 10/10 users whom replaced their batteries. No more drain no more shutdowns no more heat.I do agree that any coding or programming can control shutdown parameters. However, for your argument to hold, scientifically, it has to be easy to recreate just on every or most machines. Its a hypothesis must or it fails. Again, i know no one with shutting down 10.2 or high drain, not even the girl's 800+ cycles iphone 5. The gf's coworker whom i provided middle man advice fixed his with a battery swap as well. Third day, he says it works better (battery life wise) than he remembers even with ios 9. My deduction? Poor 14months old battery.

I also agree with your premise of 'more defective batteries' out there. And more frequently. Just not the cause. And that some iphones- but not all- reacted with huge drain to the update- some even a battery killing drain. Two days ago posted industry links to people suggesting that batteries are now a 1 yr tops consumable.

Unfortunately. A single summertime heat pacific cargo crossing can affect all its li ions load. Happened on a plane once and it went down. Yourself agree that heat can do it.

I also agree that, technically, an update could decrease or even remove the shutdowns. However, my bet is, with high certainty, that it will do nothing for all batteries with poor health. They will still drain faster than a normal one. So genya or sylvia may have no more shutdowns, but poor energy performance under loadis likely to continue IF thheir battery is out of spec.

His view is that constant phone or battery replacement may now be the new normal. I do agree with his point but disagree with the concept of short life high prices electronic. Leaves me dumbfounded. Been in countries where peopel barely make 100$ a month.

reports of battery replacements working are in several languages. Icannot explain how your working battery went from some peformance to no performance after the 10 update. What i can do is say this- if replacing it resolves your problem, we also found your issue. 10/10 people did it successfully so far.

Yes, it would appear this thread is being tightly monitored and any post they dislike or disagree with is instantly axed. I will not waist my time responding here anymore. All I can say is customer care is beginning to tell individual users there is a coding issue that is being looked at, and Apple likely will not officially release this info until they have the resolution if ever at all in my opinion.

Yes, the restore apple requested...upgradred my 10.1 phone with the rapid drain/shutdown issue to 10.2. At no point was I notified that my OS would be changed. I had been avoiding the upgraded to 10.2 because I read it made my problem even worse.

10.2 seems to have stopped the shutdown, but now my battery drains from like 95-15. Instead of of 40 to 0. Though when it drains from 95% to 15%, it stays on for quite awhile. It seems like the battery indicator is of no use. Whatever it says it not correct.

I'll try turning off Siri as I never use it anyway.

However, at this point based on evidence in this group I have to believe the battery is bad in some way...despite testing ok. Whatever is wrong is just highlighted by the bad code in 10.x OS. It working just fine in 9.

Looking through this thread i think there is more than one issue being talked about.

I came here because I had the shutdown and quick battery drain, but as my battery was one that Apple had reported as faulty my first action was to get that replaced.

Ive now had my new battery since last Sunday. At first I wasn't sure MY issue had been fixed, but it seems much better now.

Ive not let it go down too low to see if it cuts out before hitting 1%, although im going to try that out at the weekend. I have had it go to 10% when i first got the phone back, but it didn't cut out.

It still seems to be draining a bit quicker than it used to though.

As far as what's causing this power drain, one thing ive noticed is i have Google photos installed (recently, might have been around the time i started seeing issues), and the background usage seems very high. Ive not opened it at all for a few days, and its showing nothing for usage since last full charge, but according to the Battery section in the settings its run for 35mins in the background over the past 24 hours. Im not sure what to make of this but i can imagine its draining the battery while its working.

The fact that Apple seem to be acknowledging there might be an issue with IOS 10.2 is promising, but i wont hold my breath that the next update fixes it. Nothing is that easy.
