iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

It could be any other Apple approved app, even the IOS itself.

I am using Pokémon Go as a means to an end, to prove the longevity of my battery.

I am doing no more than cycle the battery faster than a normal user.

If my brand new phone battery gives up after, say, 6 months then the battery in my mind is not fit for purpose.

Or, the software/OS is not.

If 30% is the magic number, why not then recalibrate the battery meter to switch the phone off at 30%?

I guess it would be a bit like Jimmy Hendrix not understanding amplifiers and asking why they did not go to volume 11.

He then asked for Marshall amplifier to be built which did.

If you switched off at 30% one gets less battery life, a good 20-25% less usage (as you know, 100 to 70 does not discharge the same as 30 to 0). Under normal use, you should get the 600 cycles. Current batteries are way better than batteries used to be 10 years ago, and getting better with each generation. I remember 1100 mAh flip cell phone batteries lasting no more than 100-200 cycles, and they had no big screen or Pokemon Go to challenge them. Would go buy a new one and replace it. So it is a clear trend that all batteries are getting better, along with phone management features. Users, however, also demanded an a lot of new features - from 1" low res to 5" 324ppi bigger screens, better visual/CPU/graphic intensive games, multi-linked apps, social networking fusing, which place high demand on this hardware. If you think about it, a current cell phone with a 1900 mAh battery is more powerful than many computers 15 years ago. It has 800 more mAh per cell than a 2006 phone, but delivers hundreds of time more data processing. Not too bad I might say.

I may have a solution for extreme battery usage, but not unexpected shutdown.

Simply switch the data from LTE to 2G, reboot the phone and switch back to LTE.

Before doing this,

I made a test by remove the SIM, put on air plane mode with Wi-Fi & Bluetooth on.

I made a week.

But didn't use the phone at all only reed some email couple of time.

No unexpected shutdown between 30-40% (It happen once a while).

After 5 day, the battery pass from 29% to 1% instantly during I was reading email.

Then I check couple of time to see when it will die without abuse of the phone except check if it's still on.

I made 5th, 6th and 7th day on 1%.

Then I was hurry to see when it will shut the 7th day,

I was going crazy using my iPhone 4 that apple "iOS update" kill it to a toooooo slooooooo phone!

I check some email and it finally die.

Then I put back the SIM card but switch off the Data.

I made almost a day, but an unexpected shut down at 42%.

Then I switch back the data, but it was still drain the battery as crazy.

Then I remember that in the past I had an battery drainage, and I found a trick on the web that it is simply switch the data from LTE to 2G, reboot the phone and switch back to LTE.

I do this this morning, and after 6h of use (reed couple of email and take 10 picture, I'm at 89% now.

But I also deactivate Siri, push email on some personal email and couple of minor thing to save battery usage.

Yesterday, I download the Battery Life app and I have 21.1% Battery Wear Level. (2300/2915 mAh)

I'll keep you posted if the battery still draining fast.

But I don't think it will help the 30-40% unexpected shut down or the 29-1% &1% for couple of hour/day.

Googled and saw a few articles you might have been referencing. All had an update added to the end, that said Apple has no plans to replace 6 batteries. Whatever info they got appears to be a hoax.

Anyways...

To the person with Siri issues... Siri had no affect on my battery issue either way. I turned it off, but battery never reported Siri as a hog. Actually none of my apps were reported as a battery hogging.

To the person asking about 10.2... When updated to 10.2 I didn't have shutdown issue any more, but my batter meter was unreliable. It would drop huge amounts and then the phone would stay operational even at a very low level. It also would jump up significantly if I plugged into charge for 30 seconds. I don't think upgrading to 10.2 matters much either way if you plan to replace the battery. However if there is some kind of battery imprinting happening by the OS as Belisarius has mentioned, then maybe better to start with the latest.

So far so good after non-oem battery replacement. I'm still not ready to report this is fixed until a week or two passes. Again I went non-oem because Apple maintained that my battery was good.

Just an update.. < 2 year-old iphone 6 with severe battery drain since iOS 10. 100% to 0% in 6 hours, standby. Nothing installed since Genius bar restore 1.5 weeks ago, and all settings target minimal drain. Battery tested "OK" so Genius bar refused to replace it, and said no other Apple store would do it either. They suggested I try an authorized service provider so I did, but they are also refusing to change the battery. So it looks like it's non OEM or nothing! Apparently there are a lot of fake OEM's out there so it's hit & miss in terms of quality. Can't believe Apple refuses to help and suggests I replace my phone instead.

I too facing the same problem but my phone switches off at different battery levels. Sometimes it goes down to 3% from 10 % suddenly else it switches off at different battery levels @ 3% , 7%, 13% etc..,. Even my mobile is eligible for free battery replacement program. When I contacted apple service centre they told me as that it's a OS problem and it will be cleared in next update. But none of the iOS update never cleared the problem in my iPhone 6S. Even service centre doesn't have the knowledge about the problem.

Vinoth, did you just write that your iphone is one of the recalled 6S and you are unable to get it replaced.. Apple released clear instructions on them being replaceable due to the very issue you mention, and it being a factory storage manufacturing issue. Am quite baffled.. No matter the update, your defective battery was labelled as such by Apple and recalled. Why not have gone at a Genius Bar?
