iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Greetings paikinator, food for thought idea: why now one here with iPhone SE. Ever wondered why no one here - unless I missed a post- has a SE. Also tried several searches online- SE - cannot quite find forums. Yet this is a phone that has sold out or topped sales in several countries. Voted the best 4" phone on the planet, it is also the best built IMO. Almost got it, and I still wish the next 5"+ phone was an oversized version of the SE- do not care about weight. Apple took the 6S, more compact board and shoved it inside the body of a 5. Used ARM 9, more performant yet less amperage; also 4" screen less demand than the 6/6S/7.. They also upgraded the 5 battery from 1560 mAh to a newer, better 1642 mAh. And, per Apple's/ review numbers, similar to iPhone 5, 50-60% more torsional rigidity (150+ lbs) vs iPhone 6, and better condensed parts inside. That thing does not twist, by hand or dropping. Built like a small tank, rave technical reviews everywhere. So, top sturdiness, low amperage demand, great battery life, and ... no weird reports 24 months in hundred million. Can it just be a freak luck or just a better cocooned circuit?

Is Apple ever going to admit that this is a problem? I rely on my phone for work purposes and this bug has been incredibly frustrating over the last few months. If I am out in the community and my phone happens to die with 30% left, it absolutely will not turn back on until I plug it into a power source. I've had iPhones for years and this is the first time I'm considering making a switch. I cannot have a phone that I can't rely on and Apple has been way too quite about this issue. This is really disappointing to say the least.

The question is, Adegrush, what steps have you taken these months with Apple Support, and Genius Bar. What did they find out, and what is your particular story, phone etc. Have read many stories here of people whom pursued support, methodically, and resolved their issue. On top of, it, regardless of phone model, most of these appointments and diagnostics are free.

I have checked into the battery replacement program, I have contacted Apple Support via phone and done everything they told me to do to erraticate the issue short of paying the out of warranty cost to have my battery replaced or the out of contract price to replace my entire phone through my provider. I live in a rural community and the nearest Apple Store/Genius Bar is a solid 3 hours from my home so it's not just a quick trip to the mall for me. This problem occurred immediately after an update. I am dissatisfied with Apple's transparency on an issue that many users seems to be having and their customer service on this issue. End of discussion.

I have an iPhone 6 that was perfect until I updated to 10.1.1 and I have been scared to do any more updates since this. I have experienced the battery drain since this update back in November and in the past two weeks, the random shut downs have started and are now making it impossible to use my phone. I can unplug my phone now and with a 100% charge and open safari and go to one page and in 6 min, my phone is at 1% and will shut down. If I plug it in then it immediately jumps to 89%. I think it is really sad that Apple doesn't acknowledge these problems. I will have to buy a new phone soon because I can't live like this. I've waited almost 3 months suffering from these unacceptable issues from Apple. I seriously doubt I will buy another apple again.

you called my name. One should never argue with fools, they bring someone down to their level and beat them up with experience. Ummm, how come no one here with iPhone SE? hundred plus millions sold? Read on it, and yet, you will see the technical differences that can explain such freak luck. Cannot transfer years of technical college, or ugrad grad. You probably like arguing with doctors, mechanics, anyone whose answer does not fit in your biases- in fields you know little about.

"I have experienced the battery drain since this update back in November and in the past two weeks, the random shut downs have started and are now making it impossible to use my phone. " Assuming you tried Reset, Apple Support, or Genius Bar advanced reset, and it still has not resolved, your issue is power and electrical circuit, safety shutdown. It is as accurate a science as a heart attack ECG read. Gets worse and worse with each cycle. If you go at Battery University, it will explain how this works. You story, is the same for any device out there with a failing battery, a normal thing- unless you have a very recent one, sub 300 cycles. Going back 10 years. So we got over twenty people here that went down this road, and repaired the issue. Some had courtesy repairs and replacements even outside warranty, varies on so many things: location, store manager, etc. Do not listen to people blaming iOS or hurling insults- they never built a system nor they know how an electron works. Or build, corrupt and repair systems as normal class exam. Truth is iOS 10 has the same exact architecture as 9, a few addon features demarking it. And every week, out of the 500 millions iphones in use, some users are due. This was seen long before 10 was released, it is just normal science.http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-check-your-iPhone-battery-cycle-count-the- super-easy-way_id81944

Although I wish batteries lasted longer, or cost less, I prefer one that last 18-24 months and dies rapidly, with safety shutdowns, than one that just degrades visibly, like my BB. Also, may want to check out iPhone SE, no one here coming with complaints. Voted the sturdiest, best integrated phone out there, it just has an unusual ratio of low power demand and battery capacity. If everything goes well, in a few short days the issue is resolved.

You are the first cypriot I ever communicate that misses the point and the argument. Never known one to loose one, they also rarely say silly things like you wrote. Already wrote to you that what you have is a random, occurrence. A bug. Resolvable, easy. Not a hardware, nor battery- the light sensor and module has nothing to do with the battery. Two months ago had a similar issue with my Macbook Pro, and was embarrassed when Sr support asked me if I did the SMC reset.Doough! forgot. And had something like that on the iPhone 5 as well. I do not call you a turk for sharing land with them, so no reason for you to accuse me for either loving and working for Apple- have zero such loyalty. I just follow science and tell it as it is.

So, you can complain, kick, scream and hurl insults, or make the effort and have your brightness bug resolved. That issue has nothing to do with the drain, unsure why you are even confusing forums..

yep, you're right, i will not argue with fools anymore, this is why i asked you not to answer me anymore to my problems, you cannot say anything, but "battery" and "logicboard", no proper answers to proper questions, just guessings, and convincig, how smart battery-engineer you are, not giving a duck to many other facts here.

Any other clichey sayings you have there?

Jan 26, 2017 7:45 AM in response to genya78

If you have amazing battery life as you claim, and all you do is come here and dish insults, maybe you should go to the other forum pertaining to your problem. Read this one's title. You have never sat in an electrical science class or lab, maybe science in general, so you have zero credibility or expertise to comment on circuitry. And there is one thing, in all languages, they say about people unable to solve tiny problems and always complain. this is not iOS 10 related (not that you know anything about iOS architecture), nor an Apple problem. You infect people with negative bad comments, and destructive remarks that have yet to resolve a single user's problem. Am glad the twenty + never listened to you, nor have those that will come back to report resolution.

Hi everyone, my two cents might help. My 14 months old 6S on the charger overnight it stays more than 1-2 hours, wouldn't matter as the topping charge is controlled by the phone. You cannot overcharge, or charge more, it enters a trickle charge mode. My issue started maybe before ios 10.2.1 it shutdown below 40%. I've been traveling with a work contract so that made me mad, I heard the news and found the forum. I've tried factory reset and on hotel wifi it took forever but it still had the issue next day. Battery longevity seemed good. I wasn't sure if its started with 10.2.1 because I found it shut off just twice before the update and i was on the plane and travelling. Then I saw the forum, I remembered school, CCNY New York, electrical technical degree, it all made sense. The wait time for a local Genius Bar being a few days I went straight to a service center, phone battery fine at 87%, but 620 or so cycles and out of warranty. I paid for the replacement and for three days now its been even better than before.

I had people like beisarius guy in school, I was learning parts, and work on servers now. His type learn theory not just practical like me. At graduation his types get scooped by big companies, government or defense because they are just that smart and good at everything, not just college sports or classes.

I've also seen people that are jealous of them, insulting them, and they do not pass the first midterm. I've read what you wrote, and it is kind of garbage. What he says, they teach us in every school. About circuits program batteries wear in general. I can only pass and get my degree doing that science, not garbage. As soon as I read the posts I remembered and went straight for the repair and my phone is now working.

I wish the battery worked longer or that Apple invents a defect notification app, but I am happy i did not waste time. I am amazed beisarius tried really hard to reassure inform and help you, and you repaid with insults. Girl, I am glad we are nowhere near. I mean, even apple support say the same not just books.
