iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

I had this problem after the most recent software upgrade to 10.1.1. Yesterday, I sync'ed my phone to my PC for the first time since the upgrade and then closed all of the apps that were running individually. For the first time since the upgrade, the problem did not occur today. The only apps running now are Starbucks, Skype, Phone, Mail, and Settings.

When I was having the problem occur, I would go to the Settings Menu and then to Battery. It would always report that the usage time since the last full charge was the same as standby, which seemed odd (like an app was always active).

Has anyone else tried this approach and had any success? I'm suspecting that there is an app that used to be OK and is now treated differently, and that it is a pretty common app (so it screws up a lot of people)

For a couple of days "usage and standby" gave the same numbers, both under 10.1.1 and after downgrade to 1.1. I tried it out with no external apps (just all of the native Apple apps) and with the Airplane mode. 10.1 had worked fine before. Battery kept running out of power very fast though. So I installed the apps I use with "background refresh" off, still under 10.1. That helped just a little bit, but not enough to keep the iPhone going for a day. Now, after three days, the situation changed. Last night I charged my iPhone to 100%. This morning it had 97% left. After 8 hours. So I'm completely lost now as to what causes this odd behaviour. By the way, my iPad Air 2 drains very fast too under 10.1.1.

Hey guys,

Maybe I have a solution, a guy from apple care told me to calibrate the battery and the iOS. Do the following: full charge iPhone, then then we have to empty the battery as fast as possible with video recording in 4K for example. If the iPhone power off, then power on again and use it till battery is really empty. Then recharge to 100% without disconnecting. Let's give it a try

One of the million things I tried. Had one day of perfect battery use the day before yesterday. Yesterday battery drained because of excessive use of "Phone [audio]" (77%). I didn't even use the iPhone for that. Just looked up a number. There is definitely something wrong somewhere. (iPhone 6s - new battery with % wear). Also: use and standby are giving the same time specifics again. So it seems as though the phone is not going into sleep mode.

Hey all,

I've had this issue on the two iPhone 5s devices we have since updating to iOS 10.1.1. In particular I was using the Apple Music App and the battery drained by 71% after 4 minutes of screen use and 40 minutes of background activity (according to the Battery report in Settings).

Clearly background activity is the issue here so I turned it off completely for all apps and I haven't had any battery drain issues on either iPhone since. Just go to "Settings > General > Background App Refresh" and turn off the very top toggle/checkbox. No Apps will now perform any background activity but it I didn't see any problems using Apps at all. For example you can listen to music and let the screen go to sleep and the music still plays fine.

Hopefully this will be fixed in iOS 10.2 or later but for now I'm happy to leave off Background App Refresh.
