iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Belisarius.

I was talking mostly about duration of run Time. It was more the sense that when the phone was new it would last about 3 days sitting on standby. Now it lasts about 1/2 that time.

I think I will give Apple a call and see what they say about my battery with their diagnostic tools for clarification.

Should be interesting. Excited about finding out what they say.

Hi Apple Yoda,

I agree with you! So tired of the endless chatter on this thread too! I did a factory reset and the problem resumed after a day. I wouldn't suggest it. It is an OS problem. I did 2 restores, one at the Apple Store and one with an Apple support member on Twitter, finally spoke with a Apple Supervisor where he walked me through a factory reset. Nothing worked. Hoping Apple comes up with a solution soon! Good luck!

'"Enough evidence" and OTA? Hmm sure aliens did not do it? What about wired updateswith which people had issues..

So your premises? 0. Assumptions? You list 0 factors analysis? 0. Hypothesis? 0 Conclusions? 0 theory? 0. No methodology no science. The letters you grpup together provide 0 value. Therefore if you have 0 to contribute , why post?

Flat tire? Road chips? Poor battery? Get over it. Are you born after 1984 expecting someone to always solve lifes small stuff?how about you get a new battery, then come back and let us know. At least that is a solid trial and method...

Sylvia, iPhone battery forums go back 9 years. Some warranty programs are 3 years now for select batches. I hope that you are not considering waiting more than a year.

You are welcome to read 1000 pages worth of community discussions since iPhone 5. I have nevet seen an user with abrupt recurring shutdowns EVER return to post that her/his issue was resolved by an IOS update. Hardware replacement, yes.

Goid luck waiting for a software solution.

Belisarius,

My phone was fine until I updated to 10.1.1. Battery is running at 92% and was told it was a software problem. I am working with Apple Support and they are trying to come up with a solution... I am not going to reply with a long post, but this is a problem and it needs to be addressed by Apple. Just letting others know a Factory Reset is not a solution from experience. You are on the thread a lot...do you work for Apple?

Very grateful for the link you sent but alas I am out by 11 months. Not eligible.

Update 9:

Well after hosing my daughters iPhone 5 again by re-installing the backup for all of my daughters stuff, I thought I would get on the horn with apple and run the diagnostics on my particular battery. So what I have is a 4 year old battery which was capable of lasting about 36 hours, but it seems that when the 10.1.1 update was run it developed the problem.

I did a Recovery Mode Factory restore and the phone seemed to be working as it had before the update. Lasting 30-36 hours on a charge in standby. But with the backup re-installed, the phone died inside of 3 minutes and the faulty indicator would say it was charged 100% again.

So Apple ran the diagnostics remotely that are in update 10.2.

My battery came back as faulty with only maximum of 20% charge capability.

Apple Store will do the change out of the battery for $79 bucks.

But that is 2 1/2 hour away. Apple does have an authorized hardware repair in our area, but when I called it was $112.

My instant reaction was Yikes. But upon cooling my head off a bit I realize that they get charged a certain amount by Apple and have to recover their tech cost and make a modicum of money. Plus it saves me 2 1/2 hours in the car or days of sending it in to Apple. So instant gratification at a premium for living in the Awesome place I do with no Apple Store. Trade off.

So tomorrow I will drop the phone for repair and pick it up in the afternoon. Repair is less than 1 hour.

Also will pick up Apple Care + for the new iPad Pro and a Smart Keyboard and nice glass screen protector. Expensive day, but peace of mind will be had.

Great thing is my daughter will be thrilled that her phone will last longer than her old mans or her other sisters phone.

Here is what the Tech said when I asked what he thought was going on with the phone and why I was able to Factory Restore my phone and it was able to function for so long.

About the factory Restore...... "That is a bit odd and it likely refreshed the phone enough to act normal until the deterioration of her battery started to become more apparent to you both. Either way it’s clearly the battery failing so it needs a repair to work appropriately from here on out."

I will update once the new Battery is installed and report on function of the phone at that time.

Remember ... this is nearly a 4 year old battery that has been well used first by my wife and next by kids who are very hard on phones in every way.

My iPhone has started shutting even when there
is 90% battery -- I know that Apple has acknowledged this issue within certain
phones (mine doesn't fall within those serial numbers) but I've heard a lot of
other people are experiencing the same problem. According to Apple Support my
battery "COINCIDENTLY" was used up at the exact same time this problem began!

I had been wondering if anyone else has had that same "coincidence" happen?

Similar issue - after the update my iPhone 6s has started shutting even when there is 90% battery -- I know that Apple has acknowledged this issue within certain phones (mine doesn't fall within those serial numbers) but, according to Apple Support my
battery "COINCIDENTLY" was used up (end of life) at the exact same time this problem began!

I'm waiting for them to email me a copy of the diagnostics (supposedly the email has to go through security?) ..... I have a very hard time believing that one day my battery is fine and the next, after the update, it's suddenly at it's "natural" end .....

I'm wondering how many people have had that same "coincidence" happen?

Ladyspritz, I will keep in touch. I feel the same way you do. Supposedly, Apple is aware of the problem, but Apple Support Supervisor does not know when an upgrade to help will be out. I did remove Apps that I do not really use and will clear out Safari often and that has helped somewhat. I charged my phone this morning at 100% and it is now 2:15pm MST and I am at 90%. I have been texting, on FB and reading my email. Good Luck!
