iOS 10.1 Battery drain

Hello.

Updated my iPhone 5 to iOS10.1 and have been having battery problems.

1 - It jumps from 30% charge to 1% in a few seconds then shuts down.

Now here is the stranger part.

As soon as it reboots after connecting to a charger it show 30% charge. When I unplug it right away it still shows 30% and runs like nothing happened for a good few hours.

So it goes from zero charge to 30% in the time it takes to reboot? Strange.

2 - Shutting the phone down at night with a good 80% charge, it won't reboot in the morning due to no battery charge. I plug it in and its back to 30% in a few seconds.

Thanks for any suggestion in advance.

Not at all dear Sylvia. Doing grad studies (strategic studies and advanced critical thinking, keeping the nation safe) and it takes seconds to glance and respond. it is most unfortunate if you are experiencing drain. Then there is battery failure. Once that battery health spirals down, there is not comeback possible. Adrian, looking at the analysis, PG deserves a thumbs down as a battery killer. 28% drain with peaking pulses is just asking to kill any battery..

"Pokémon Go stresses the battery more than other uses in requesting deep cycles prompted by long playtimes. The game requires almost constant communication with the towers to maintain internet connection. Other applications are typically shorter in duration. Figure 1 compares the average battery drain of typical smartphone applications with Pokémon Go."

"The analysis is based on crowdsource data and users experience. Pokémon Go has one of the highest battery drain rate. The average battery level loss is 28% per hour."

According to Apple Support my battery "COINCIDENTLY" was used up at the exact same time this problem began!

I had been wondering if anyone else has had that same "coincidence" happen?

I have. iPhone 5, iOS 7. As soon as I installed it, it was drained in hours, overheating. I had Apple Care, battery replaced, then issue gone. Be it was a sub 6 months old phone. I then join the older macworld forums and joined hundreds of upset users. Took me years to revert back to science roots and realized, yes it just happends. But also, any installation stresses a battery BEYOND BELIEF. The technical word used by energy PhD gurus is 'stress.'

Lindyball, the high ballpark is some 1000 iPhones are replaced weekly, and batteries are a part of reality. So yes, 1000 will fail during the iOS 10 release, 10.1, 10.2 10.5, iOS 11 and maybe 2000 during iOS 12 release.

The data is derived from Apple's warranty numbers (3.5%) vs Profit (250 million) vs iPhone ops share (60%).

"Hey Apple troll. Everyone sees through your use of techno babble to attempt to hide the source of failures in the phones. Give it up. You're exposed. Everyone needs to stops wasting their time and dollars and have Apple repair or replace the phones. They caused the damage, they know it. "

Once your battery is replaced and your phone is working, I will be laughing even though you do not return to update. Your adjectives will come to your mind as reflective of your skillsets. You know NOTHING of Li Ion technology, you do not even know what "Stress" means to Li Ion plates..battery University is a good start.

In the end, if you get your problem resolved, will be happy for you and well past your condescending remarks.

Belisarius, if only 3.5% of Apple products fail each year then why do you advocate taking out AppleCare which is at least 10% of the purchase price and only gives one extra year protection? Especially as many network carriers/providers offer subsidised upgrades after two years anyway. I realise you also get accidental damage cover but there is a fairly hefty excess applied to this and I'm sure you could get more cost effective insurance on the open market.

By using a credit card I get 3 years. I also keep cell phones 2-3 years, preferring to skip a generation. It helped when avoiding the bendy iPhone 6. Then you add transit in very cold places (-30F) , which can affect battery life, or the heat of the Iraqi dessert, we can only do so much to keep them alive even if turned off. In the Middle East those that kept their on had them fried after 2-3 heat shutdowns, and that was the only way to connect home without any Apple Store withing 1000+ miles, and no access to one for months. I did not expect the iPhone 5 to survive the heat, but it did perfectly by controlling its temperature. Two iPhones I donated in their second year to people that could not afford one, and the Apple Care went to them. I also had battery fails, replaced through Apple Care.

As well, depending which part of the world am working for long periods, they do not offer subsidized upgrades. And I prefer paying upfront for an unlocked phone (or that is another 80$ or soo fee), so you can swap any SIM card when traveling.

Not certain of the coverage exactly.

Apple tech said I was covered on the battery for a year.

The service center said it was only for 90 days.

I am confused.

Apple Approved service. Apple Battery replacement.

Thoughts?

ˆ

Any hardware I had replaced it was 90 days (even logicboards). It could be well 90 days unless some other coverage comes in at play. Maybe Apple itself is covering extra? A call to Apple may clarify.

OK, I was really stupid. 2nights ago I got the msg on my iPad about an update. I've been reading all these posts for over 2 weeks. But since I was just getting the update, I figured its good.... right??? forgetaboutit!!! What did I do??? Took the ipad off charge 2 1/2 hrs ago, and it is down to 62%!! No videos or anything... just playing a little bingo!! What do I do now? I'm just sick about it!!!

"quick question, I want to see if the battery is lasting long enough to be useful but don't have time to sit around and watch it all day, will it hurt the phone at all to leave the screen on overnight and record the screen with a separate camera to see how long it lasts? thanks."

The screen is a top quality piece of technology and you can even watch video 15hrs/day for weeks and it will not be affected (tried it on an iPhone 6S). The advantage of such a video is that it can capture the discrepancy between % charge and sudden shutdown. A lot of people will find it interesting.
