iTunes freezes while importing CDs

I've posted on this topic before and I've read several posts stating the same problem. I did a test last night and I really feel that the problem is the mac version of iTunes. I took a random cd to work, a burned copy with some minor scratches, and tried to import it on our mac there. Guess what? I had the same problem! After that I tried to import the same cd on the IBM I use every day. That cd imported without one problem and seemed to import faster. I hope Apple is working on this issue because this is becoming very frustrating. Any additional info on this issue would be appreciated.

I'm having the same issue. After the upgrade, I hadn't imported any new cds for a while so I didn't notice. When I try to import (or even play) a new cd, itunes goes crazy and I have to force quit because it's "not responding". Very frustrating, especially since these are brand new cds, no chance of a scratch. One interesting side note - I did import a dvd of music last month, no problem...

So, I was reading some other postings regarding different problems with itunes 7, and someone (forget who, sorry!) suggested logging in as another user and starting another itunes library. It worked! I'm importing some cds right now. Of course, it's still a little stupid because I'll have to transfer the files from this library to my real one, but still. So, perhaps the itunes problems have to do with the size of the library? If you have a large library you're unable to import? Just a guess, but I thought I'd share that temporary fix... hopefully the next version of itunes will get rid of the problem alltogether.

I don't have answers but just wanted to say that my one month old iMac just started behaving the same way. I have all the latest updates installed on mine, including a security fix which just came out in the last week. Right now every single music CD I import causes iTunes to hang. It mostly seems to strike at the very beginning, like when it is accessing the iTunes store or Gracenotes. I find that if I "force quit" the iTunes application, start it up again, and retry the import, I'm usually successful. Sometimes I've had to do this several times, or play the CD through and then try the import. Yes, it's getting a little bit annoying, especially when you add in the fact my iMac has the Matushita Super Drive, which is really slow. Most imports zip along at a speedy 5x - 13x !!.
I wonder if this hang problem got introduced with the security patch that went out last week ? Up until this weekend, when I had some time to import more of m CD collection I did not have this problem.

Similar thing happening for me. I have a fairly new macbook and needed to cleanse my ipod of its windows taint, I thought no problem I have the cds I will just reimport. No such luck usually about 3-4 songs in it just hangs, it will not allow the stop import (I get a coloured pinwheel- and that continues for a long time). Force quit takes several goes. This ends in me restarting. These cds work with my pc. I have tried this with at least 20 cds. Given the computer hangs everytime that is all I can bear. I am contemplated the removal of itunes and reinstall. Any further suggestions or do I wait for another version of itunes before I repopulate the ipod?

im using 10.3.9 imac g5, and got an external usb cd/reader drive, that seems to help, also get a cd cleaning/polish kit from wally wrld, 9-12 bucks, and rub that white compound on the scratch will help. i had sewveral dvds, cd's hang up in the slot drive, so i just use to burn only. O.W.C. has some kind of blue ray based int. cd drive, so that might be some help. i have 2 ext hd's, and by that im keeping most of the heat outside of this glorified laptop. but i wish itunes would give a "pause" or "stop" prompt when a bad spot is detected on cd, and give you a chance to fix it while retaining what has already been imported, and dont get me started on xfade playbk on the ipod. i hope wwdc 07' has some solutions for dj style ipod listening. will probably install 10.5 and ilife 07' when available. steve

I thought I would add my voice to this one. It hangs when I try to import or even play a CD, and this does appear to be related to scratches. I did not have this problem until I upgraded to the latest version, because the older version did not support my iPod. Apple really needs to address this, because a scratched cd may not be playable or importable, but it should not cause the application to hang.....................................................

I'd like to add my voice to the growing chorus of discontent on this subject.

I'm having the same problem except, oddly, iTunes only seems to freeze like this when I try to import the Beatles "Love" cd.

Considering my new MacBook is only a few weeks old, it's pretty annoying.

Any ideas?

I have experienced the same problem attempting to import the new U2 18 singles CD that my wife received as a Xmas present. 15 of the songs will import successfully -- then it hangs on the last 3. I have tried changing the importing format -- mp3, AAC, Apple lossless, etc. -- but that has no effect. No matter what I've tried, iTunes freezes on the last 3 tracks and I have to force quit iTunes. What's especially puzzling to me is that the first 15 songs import flawlessly. It's a brand new CD, so scratches/damage are not an issue.

I just wanted to add to this post as well. I just received my MacBook as a Christmas present. As soon as I started to import CD's into iTunes it began to freeze and I had to force quit. It did take many CD's before this happened. I talked to my brother about it and he informed me it was most likely a scratched CD. Tonight I tried to add more songs from a new CD and once again it froze! I am just getting a little frusterated. I love my new MacBook but I wish this could be fixed! I am glad that I found some other people who are having the same problem.

Wish I had an answer to this, but thought I'd just reinforce the chorus for a solution. I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium that I replaced with a macbook Pro. The G4 is now a virtual jukebox that is also having problems with this "itunes freezing when doing nearly anything involving a cd." Maybe it's worth trying to install an earlier version of itunes until they get it figured out.
