apple tv 4 unable to play content

Morning all,

I'm sure you've all been enjoying the Apple TV 4, but wondering if anyone has experienced content error playing movies through itunes after the recent update to 10?

So I have quite a few movies purchases through Itunes. Plays just fine on my imac and my iphone/ipad.

Any of the streaming shows on the apple tv work just fine too other than itunes, so I know it has nothing to do with bandwidth speed.

Each time I'm on the apple tv and got to the imovie app, I select my movie and the loading icon will remain for several minutes. Eventually I get an error stating unable to load content. I've restarted the system. I've tried logging in and out of itunes, I've tried powercycling. My question is why did this error only occur after I updated the AppleTV? It was playing movies just great before.

So now I'm wondering how long programming will take to offer another update to fix the issue. I don't feel there is a need to trouble shoot any manual settings. This is obviously script build. Perhaps just an notification as to how long it will be before my family can continue watching their shows?

Thanks so much

Apple TV (4th generation), iOS 10.1.1, auto update

I Had the same issues after the last update and assumed it was my old modem, I went to my Cable and internet provider and upgraded my speed and to their new advanced wi fi modem. It had no effect problem still persists, but my Apple TV 3 that I moved to the bedroom works flawlessly, in fact the new internet speed and wi if modem have greatly improved the functionality of my Apple TV 3, and I have retried more then once all the suggestions to fix the problem on this end. As well I have a windows 10 laptop connected to the same TV and have bought and rented movies from the Microsoft store and there are no issues with the speed or connection the problem lies with Apple and the last update, and the fact Apple keeps wasting time making the same suggestions when the problem is on their end. I have held off pre ordering The Suicide Squad and Jason Bourn in case the issue still persists by the time they are available, and will purchase the movies from the Microsoft Store instead. As streaming is the future but far from perfect I would recommend anyone to have a second option for streaming. A decent Windows 10 laptop and the Microsoft store equals The Apple TV 4 in sound and HD quality.

it's interesting that the movie that is having trouble loading on my apple tv4, loads instantly on my iMac just fine and plays with no problems.

I have seen a trend of recently purchased movies causing the issue. Sometimes they won't play at all or i get about 2 minutes into it then the loading screen will come up which then results in the error loading content page.

I wasn't having any trouble until the apple TV os update 10.

This is a user forum, you aren't addressing Apple here nor will receive a response from them and no one here can comment on any future plans.

That being said, it is working fine on my system and there doesn't seem to be any widespread issue (which would be the case if it was the update).

You would need to do some troubleshooting. Another device working doesn't rule out the network and issues can come at any time.

I too have had this problem. Here is the strange thing I have found - try finding the same movie through the search feature. When I have done this and selected the movie from the search results it seems to work. In one case it was not found, which could mean they no longer have the rights to it, but that's a different issue.

My supposition is that there is an indexing issue. Not sure if that means it's a Apple TV problem or an iTunes library issue, but then I don't have the issue with my Apple TV 3 devices.

Try the search approach, if it works then at least there is a work around.

@vazendrew, I did take the time to troubleshoot the matter. I do realize that it doesn't seem to be a network event. I do realize apple will not respond to such a forum unless there is a true majority problem. I'm looking for someone with similar issues regarding the apple tv4 after the recent update that most likely caused the problem. I do not see any issues and have tested for such issues with bandwidth or even the function of the apple tv in general as it continues to function as normal with any other app and in doing so has no lag or error messages other than using the imovie app stating an error while loading content when playing purchased movies from the itunes store. This indeed is an isolated problem and I'm unfamiliar of what the cause would be, otherwise, I would not be posting here.

@doc george, I do not have any issues on any other device playing any movies from the itunes stores other than the apple tv. I have not yet tried the search tool to see if that would bypass the error loading content. I have found that much earlier purchases have no issues. I also discovered if I continue to hit Ok on the error message and try hitting play repeatedly up to 5 times, it will then proceed to play and will completely play the entire movie. Very odd.

I too had this problem with my Apple TV 4 since the TV os 10 update in last few new movie purchases especially but also some old ones. Sometimes after trying once or a few times the movie will work other times it does not. I looked around and found this solution which works...

Go to settings/apps/iTunes movies & tv shows and set "quick start" to off.

This worked for me. With the new update Apple is going to an adaptive download

sort of like Netflix. At least that is my observation. I have a very fast connection so

I kept "quick start" set to on but kept receiving the error message. Turned it off

& was able to watch movie without error message.

Hope it works for you.

Edit: Oops the thread was a bit off as I searched, anyway I see someone else suggested this which I can recommend as a solution
