iCloud Notes not syncing across all devices

After spending 2.5 hours via online chat and phone with Apple Support today, I've verified all of my settings are correct and my devices are all running the most current software versions.

I've signed out of iCloud and back in to iCloud on all devices, deleted notes app and reinstalled (on iOS only) toggled Notes on and off in iCloud settings over the course of multiple device restarts without success.

I created test notes (device name, time and date) on each device to see if they were syncing, and every test note remained on it's device of origin. I logged in to iCloud.com, and the test note created there populated immediately on all devices.

My affected devices are as follows:

  • iPhone 7 Plus 256 - running iOS 10.1.1
  • iPad Pro 128 - running iOS 10.1.1
  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) - running macOS Sierra 10.12.1

Apple is aware of the issues, apparently they are receiving plenty of calls about this very issue this afternoon.

They have scheduled a call back with me tomorrow afternoon, hopefully everything is sorted out by then.

I am having the same issue. Was on the phone yesterday for 2 hours will Apple support and nothing got resolved. If I create a new note on iCloud.com, the note will push to my iPad, iMac, and iPhone. If I create a note on those devices, nothing gets pushed. I will say the customer support representative I have been dealing with at Apple has been great. She seems to care about the issue and has made several follow up phone calls with me. The last phone call we had she said there have been several reports on the issue and the engineers are trying to find out whats going on. We will see.

Okay, interesting. I did wired syncs to iTunes of both iPad and iPhone, and out of the blue, when I opened the app on each device, all of my Notes synced again. I might try setting a permanent Wi-Fi sync for both devices and see whether that works.

Wish I'd tried this BEFORE downloading and installing OneNote, because frankly, OneNote looks like a learning curve I don't have time for!

Hello. I've got the same issue for about a month. It started with a Sierra. My iPad, iPhone and iCloud.com worked properly with notes. Only Mac doesn't have write permission to cloud.

In order to restore it TODAY I've tried to switch on and off iCloud Notes on all iOS devices and goes what? Now I've got this issue on all of them. Simply turning notes off and on again broke all devices (don't to it). Right now the only way I can write something to notes is iCloud.com.

Unfortunately I live in Poland and when it comes to Apple we are treated like 2nd class citizens… no chat, no support, no geniuses or Apple Stores whatsoever.

Also I found this two topics that are exactly the same don't don't have such traction as this topic:

iCloud no more sync Notes on my devices - iOS 10 and macOS Sierra

Mac 10.12.1 doesn't sync Note to iPhone 10.1.1

--------------------------------

Not sure if related but iMassage between iPad and iPhone works flawlessly but Mac (Sierra on board) seems to receive messages with huge lag (if it ever receives it) and when it happens messages are in bad order.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Turn off MAC

2. Turn off iPad

3. Send text to anybody

4. Turn on iPad, look at messages. They are updated instantly with good order

5. Turn on Mac, look at messages. It take eternity to synch and order is bad.

Example:

  • Test1,
  • Test2, (yes I forgot test3)
  • Turned OFF iPad Test4,
  • Turned OFF Mac Test5,
  • Test6,
  • Tunrned ON Mac
  • Test7,
  • Turned ON iPad Test8

Final effect:

iPad:

iPhone

Mac:

I too have had the same issue. Any Notes created on my iPhone or Mac do not sync to iCloud, and therefore do not sync with each device. However, if I log into my iCloud account and create a Note there, the Note will sync to all devices.

I have had this issue since 25th November, 2016. at which time I made contact with Apple support. I have been given a Case number and promised a call back from the Senior Tech I was speaking to in 2 days, but to date I have not received any communication.

My notes are now identical, and all changes update immediately, on all 3 devices AND on iCloud. However, I realize now that I did two other things besides sync my iPhone and iPad with iTunes:

1) I went through the download and update of new iOS software that iTunes indicated was available - in spite of the fact that according to both iPhone and iPad, my iOS was already up to date!

2) I clicked the "sync via Wi-fi" checkbox on iTunes, for both devices, while they were tethered to my Macbook.

Having a very similar issue.

Anytime I create a Note in any device OTHER than my iPhone, my phone does receive the Note: However, if I update any existing Note, or create a New Note in my iphone, it does not push back to the Cloud and therefore does not update any of my other devices.

I use iPad, iMac, and MacBook Pro and Notes are syncing across all these devices. My iPhone 6 Plus (the device I use the most!) is NOT syncing up to iCloud. Have logged a Case with Apple and spoken to 2 Senior advisers, yet a fix is still to be found....

I think this issue with iCloud Notes sync was coming with the latest updates of iOS and MacOS (maybe).

I say that because on my iPod Touch 5G there is no problem with Note sync ! -> but on my iPod Touch 5G the accepted OS is limited to iOS 9. So maybe there is an issue with iOS 10 (and MacOS 10.12.1).

Does anyone know if the issue persists with the beta of 10.12.2 ?

Dec 10, 2016 1:01 AM in response to Todj

I can confirm that this fixed the issue for me on an iPhone running iOS 10.1.1. I had tried countless times to sign out of and back into iCloud and toggle Notes sync off and on, to no avail. Deleting the app obviously does something more, maybe remove some preferences files or data containers on the device. I had never tried that before, because I was assuming that deleting Notes would just remove the icon from the home screen...

However, it still didn't work on my MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra. But I managed to make it work there as well by deleting the following folders:

~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.Notes

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes.HTMLConverter

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes

Emptied trash, launched Notes app and it greeted me with the welcome screen. Re-enabled Notes sync in iCloud system preferences. Now the Mac is fixed as well - syncing works in any direction between both devices and iCloud.com.

Not sure if this would have fixed the issue a week ago or not - maybe Apple has changed something on the server end and it needed this client-side "reset" to make things work again.

Dec 10, 2016 2:14 AM in response to Tim Lorenzen

For me I didn't solve the problem.

I tried the solutions from you (Todj for my iPhone 5S on iOS 10, and Tim Lorenzen for my r-MacBook Pro on Sierra).

After reseting the Notes app and the iCloud sync of Notes on both devices, there is no difference.

I would like also to mention that I don't have this folder in my Library: (the path doesn't exist)

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes.HTMLConverter

So... I don't know if Apple have done some fixes maybe not completed for some users (or some countries, I don't know) but in my case no change.

Do you have an idea why your procedures don't work for me ?

For information, I have an iPod Touch 5G, so limited to iOS 9. There is no issue on it (the Notes are syncing very well with iCloud.com).

Dec 10, 2016 2:33 AM in response to MK05HJ09

Sad to say it still deosn't work for me:

Deleted Notes App on iPhone, iPad

Deleted all mentioned folders in Sierra

Reinstalled them all

Rebooted Sierra

Created 3 different notes, one on each devices

No synch on any of them.

EDIT: Even before I started posting here, turning off and on again the "Notes" in "Settings"->"iCloud" could sometimes fix the issue for one minute. About 1 out of 10 tries it worked for a minute. Are you sure that it worked permanently?

Dec 10, 2016 2:34 AM in response to pierrechapuis

One other thing I did earlier (before even trying to log out and back in, toggling Notes sync etc.) was to delete all existing notes on iCloud.com. I did screenshots of the notes before deleting and entered them again now that sync is apparently working for me. I understand that this may not be an option if you have a larger number of notes...

You could try moving the notes to the local storage on one of your devices. That may or may not have the same effect as explicitly deleting them from iCloud. To do that, you first have to enable "On my iPhone account" (in Settings > Notes) or "On my Mac account" (in settings dialog of the Notes app).

Dec 10, 2016 2:36 AM in response to pierrechapuis

For the sake of tests if it is possible, could you try this on iPod Touch 5G?

1. Settings -> iClouds -> Notes (check off)

2. Settings -> iClouds -> Notes (check on)

3. Settings -> iClouds -> Notes (check off)

4. Settings -> iClouds -> Notes (check on)

Doing that broke off Notes on my iPhone and iPad (Originally I've got this issue only on Mac). Did doing that broke off iPod? If so, there's 99% chance the issue is on the server side and we can do nothing about it.
