iCloud Notes not syncing across all devices

After spending 2.5 hours via online chat and phone with Apple Support today, I've verified all of my settings are correct and my devices are all running the most current software versions.

I've signed out of iCloud and back in to iCloud on all devices, deleted notes app and reinstalled (on iOS only) toggled Notes on and off in iCloud settings over the course of multiple device restarts without success.

I created test notes (device name, time and date) on each device to see if they were syncing, and every test note remained on it's device of origin. I logged in to iCloud.com, and the test note created there populated immediately on all devices.

My affected devices are as follows:

  • iPhone 7 Plus 256 - running iOS 10.1.1
  • iPad Pro 128 - running iOS 10.1.1
  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) - running macOS Sierra 10.12.1

Apple is aware of the issues, apparently they are receiving plenty of calls about this very issue this afternoon.

They have scheduled a call back with me tomorrow afternoon, hopefully everything is sorted out by then.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.1.1, null

By saying 'encrypted', I think you mean FireVault activated ? If yes, I know that FireVault is not activated on my system.

I already read a story about FireVault and keyboard light issue. For some users disabling and then re-enabling FireVault fixes this issue.

In my case, before and after the update FireVault was never on. So... I don't know.

There is also a strange behavior. In my case the keyboard, as you know, stays without light when I'm coming into my session. Then, by pressing only one time the F6 key (we expect to see the light going from the level 0 to the 1st level of brightness), on the screen the brightness indicator comes directly to the level 2. It sounds like for the system, the keyboard is already at the 1st level before pressing for the 1st time the F6 key, but in the reality there is no light !

Very strange.

This appears since Sierra for me, after a clean install (but before Sierra I have always done a clean install for all of the previous OS, without this strange issue).

Yes, I meant FileVault.

If your FileVault is off, from my understanding your keyboard brightness should work right off. What happens exactly when you:

  1. Set light on '4'
  2. Shut down MBP
  3. Turn on MBP
  4. Does the keyboard light works in this step?
  5. Login
  6. Does the keyboard light works in this step?
  7. Press light- exactly once
  8. Does the keyboard light works in this step? What value does it shows? '4' or '3'?
  9. Repeat steps 1-3
  10. Does the keyboard light works in this step?
  11. Press light- exactly once
  12. Does the keyboard light works in this step? What value does it shows? '4' or '3'?

Tell me the results of 4,6,8,10,12, it can narrow down the actual issue.

Oups sorry, I have done your procedure by increasing by one the level (not decreasing). That's why I got '5'.

For Notes, before doing the update with iTunes, I have disabled iCloud Notes sync, removed the Notes app on the iPhone, and disable Notes on mac too (and iCloud sync).

Then I plugged the iPhone with the mac with iTunes, and have done the update. After that the iPhone works fine with iCloud.com.

Finally I redone the procedure for the mac by removing the folders in Library and then by starting the Notes app (and so enabling iCloud sync again).

I did this test in my Macbook Pro a few minutes ago with no success. 😟
The notes created/changed in the Notes app in my Macbook Pro are not uploaded to iCloud.com. But if I created/changed notes in iCloud.com, the download is working.
The same issue happens in my iPhone.
My opinion as computer engineer is that this is iCloud account issue, because if I used another iCloud account it works fine.

Yes. During the tests with Apple Support team we use a iPhone to test different iCloud accounts. The problem only happens in my account. So is not the device issue (at least I think...).
The problem is... I have a life in my iCloud account. If I use another iCloud account I will lose everything. I don't know if there is a chance to Apple transfer everything from one iCloud account to another...
I deleted all my notes and right now I'm using Evernote. *****! 😟

This works for me too on Macbook pro! Thanks!

It is very odd as I tried it before and it didn't work...

Thanks anyway!

Make sure you turn off notes on iCloud and delete all folders with the word 'notes' in ~library.

Then open notes, it will start as new (welcome greeting) and will ask you to enable icloud notes.

It now syncs both ways! Yay!

Works also for me. But I would like to mention again 2 things:

* before the procedures, I delete ALL notes on iCloud.com (by doing an annoying copy/paste of all my notes in text edit to save it in local). So there was absolutely nothing in Notes after that (even I removed ALL the folders in Notes that I created)

* another thing, but not sure it is correlated or not... each guy can log in iCloud with different e-mail address. We can use the iCloud address or we can use the other one (which is required to create an Apple account). In both cases this is the same password of course. For me, I have seen that on my iPhone:

- if I log with the iCloud address, the Notes app has the same issue (no sync)

- if I log with the other address, the Notes app sync with iCloud.com

So... not sure that it is pertinent, this is just my observation during the procedure described above. Finally I decided to log to iCloud service with my other address for ALL my devices and that works for me.

I'm using a backup old iPhone to do these tests...

  • I deleted all my notes from my major iCloud account and this not changed anything.
  • I use my iCloud e-mail from my major iCloud account to login and this not changed anything either.

I have a second iCloud account, and I login in the same device and everything works.
Maybe your account was already fixed by Apple. I don`t know.
But my major iCloud account still bugged. 😟

'I'm using a backup old iPhone to do these tests...' : What is the OS of your old iPhone ? iOS 10 ? the latest version ?

Because on my old iPod Touch 5G (limited to iOS 9) there is no bug. And on my iPhone the bug was fixed by the procedure above AND the 2nd update to iOS 10.1.1 with iTunes.

But maybe this was just a coincidence and Apple is doing some fixes step by step for each iCloud account. I don't know.
