MacBook Pro Touch ID not working!!

I just got my MacBook Pro yesterday ( with Touch ID). I have already set up everything and it is working fine. Today morning, when I open macbook, in login page, it doesn't ask me to use Touch ID already. Setting is okay but it doesn't ask in my login screen. I just delete all finger data and shut down. It is not okay. It just doesn't ask when I login to computer. How shall I do?

I had this problem too.

When I first got my Mac, touch id worked fine. Then it all of a sudden stopped working. The touch bar simply did not ask me for a Touch Id, and I had to enter my password each time.

I managed to fix the problem in the following way:

  • In System Preferences, Touch ID, I unchecked the "Use Touch ID for:" "Unlocking your Mac".
  • Then I logged out.
  • Then I logged in.
  • Then I checked the "Use Touch ID for:" "Unlocking your Mac" again.

Then it worked again.

System: MacBook Pro 13 2017 inch model

I was able to make the Touch ID work again by deleting all of the finger scans that I had set up. I did this through the System Preferences and clicking on Touch ID. After deleting all of the finger scans, I restarted my MacBook Pro and just set up ONE finger print. I restarted my MacBook Pro again, logged in using my password, and let the system go into sleep mode by itself and then tapped on the spacebar to wake the system and the touchbar prompted me for my fingerprint to enter the system.

I will try to set up the other two finger scans allowed in the Touch ID system preference and see what happens. Thus, this is not a hardware issue but a software issue. When I set up the other finger scans, I plan to set them up ONE at a time and restarting up the MacBook Pro after each finger scan added and see if the touchbar asks me for my fingerprint scan to enter the system after the system goes to sleep on its own. I will post an update to this. Until then, I hope this helps anyone having this issue. Take care.

I have same issue here. It was working just fine before the last big update of OS X. Afterwards, my computer has been behaving differently. One of those new issues is the ID password is not working anymore. I did hold shift+control+option+power bottom, and once on, it yes says summarizing that the ID password will be able after hitting your password manually, though, it keeps not working. I am surprised not one from apple support has come up here, and drawn some lines resolving this issue. Will call myself, but after reading your replies, I come worried.

i thought in the same way and deleted my fingerprint. But the worst part is now i am unable to add my fingerprint. when i try to add the fingerprint , it prompts for password. But once i enter the password i dont see any other instructions on the screen.

Also , it takes more time to login than usual when i type the password.

I was also having the same issue. Until I followed the steps below. Now it works!

- Shut down your computer.

- Hit "Shift", "Control", "Option" and the power button all at the same time and hold it for 15-20 seconds. Nothing should happen, well, nothing that you will see anyway. (The key combination resets something with the Touch ID)

- Power on your computer normally and login as you usually would...now the Touch ID should work.

I had the same problem, I fixed it - but not without without a hoop or two.
Here's how I resolved my issues (not sure that it'll work for everybody):
I force shutdown (control/option/command Power (all at the same time for about 6 seconds))

On reboot it asked for my password - it didn't recognize the correct password. So, I had to use the FileVault key (I have encryption turned on) to reset my password. I did this but it wanted my old password to continue - this time my computer accepted my old password, I think there's an issue with keychain when you force shutdown (but I don't know). Then I went in to thew TouchID preferences and deleted my old fingerprint (hover over it and an X appears). I'm not sure this was needed, but I did it anyway. I then set up two new fingerprint profiles and now everything works as expected. Will update if strangeness happens. Hope it works for everybody else.

Should point out that I'm on a 15" powerbook running 10.12.6

I have the same problem. My Touch ID stopped working and actually produced and error when I unchecked and then checked again the Touch ID "Unlock your Mac" option in System Preferences which produced the error "com.apple.Biometrics error 1.". I called Apple support to help out. They were very helpful but could not resolve the problem. In fact, the problem persisted when we created a new Admin account to test Touch ID. We could enter a new fingerprint but Touch ID would not permit us to unlock the machine. Very strange.

I believe that in my case it could be a software issue/bug, perhaps caused by Activity Monitor. Touch ID worked again a day later after I quit Activity Monitor and restarted my MacBook Pro 15". Looking back I think the problems started when Activity Monitor crashed. Since then it crashes randomly so I quit using it. Hope now that Touch ID will keep working and will report back if that is not the case and if any remedies exist.

I have the same issue. Got my MBP on 12/9. Only had time to go through set up process, which included the fingerprint setup. I then closed the lid (sleep) and came back to it later in the day, at which time I used my finger to unlock.

Fast forward to the Monday morning, I opened the laptop and it asked for my password. I typed it in and it would not accept it. I find it hard to believe that I mistyped it twice when I set it up. So I had to go through the reset process, which I did. I had to create a new keychain. After that, I was never prompted for TouchId. I deleted the finger and added a new one, still nothing. I attempted to change settings on the TouchId and got a com.apple.biometric... error.

I haven't been asked to use the TouchId since. Always have to enter the password. *****.
