2016 macbook pro 15" with touch bar poor battery life

I just received my new 15" MacBook Pro with touch bar. The battery life is horrible!!! I have Safari open with 6 tabs and with 95% battery, I am told that I have under 3 hours of battery life left! I thought these things were supposed to get 10 hours? I ran the battery down in 3 hours last night only browsing the web. I wasn't watching videos, just browsing. Is there something wrong with my laptop?

Hey everyone,

Received a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar 15" as well, and like several of you, was shocked by the short battery life, even with the software updates. After some extensive trial and error, I have remedied my battery woes! Sharing out in case it helps any of you.

The largest change in my case was as some suggested, an SMC reset AND a NVRAM Reset. After doing both, my time remaining shot from 3-4 hours to 9-10 hours and even longer with further tweaks. I was shocked, but was able to verify the change based on using the Battery Guru app. The Milliamp output has been cut nearly in half to ~600 and the machine is significantly cooler during light usage. See below.

A little background:

  • As mentioned, my average was 3-4 hours with light usage. This was playing Spotify, writing emails, and surfing Safari only.
  • I have been using Fruitjuice and Battery Guru to monitor and verify usage time and energy output. Both put the machine at roughly 3-4 hours of battery time and on BG, I had an average ~1100 Milliamp output.
  • Assuming the higher output was the screen, kept brightness to 75% and reduced keyboard lighting to its lowest setting.
  • Confirmed Spotlight, Photos and iCloud had finished indexing before making a judgement.
  • Even after all of the above, still 3-4 hours.

But then: I noticed something was amiss when charging the device. The last time I did so, I found the machine running hot and I noticed the fan was going nuts. That lead to the SMC and NVRam reset. After doing so, voila! 9-10+ hours of battery life!

But not only that, I've been able to extend the battery even more so, doing some additional suggestions that the forums have suggested.:

  • Revisited my startup apps in Login Items and removed things like Skype for Business, Adobe Creative Cloud and several update checkers. Though several of these were negligible, some suggested S4B and Adobe may be eating up more resources and some have reported improvements.
  • Due to the recharge incident, I decided to disable Power Nap while on battery. I'm going to see if I run into the issue again while Power Nap is on charge, will report if it occurs again.
  • Download Turbo Boost Switcher to disable Turbo Boost. I found this adds around an hour of battery life back and the milliamp output can drop around 400 during light usage. Performance doesn't seem to be affected when doing light usage. I turn it back on when I'm working on more intensive applications or plugged in.
  • I keep my keyboard lighting low and brightness around 75%.

Anyway, that's been my experience, and I'm now very happy with the machine and thrilled that I don't feel the battery anxiety I once had. It would seem that there is something glitchy in either the hardware and software still, but hopefully it's just a SMC/NVRAM reset fix for many.

Good luck out there.

Hmmm.. 😐

Everyone... Please close out Dropbox. Only sync dropbox when needed manually.

What application is Sync and Activetenveergave?

Spotlight is indexing as well, which means that for a few days, it will consume more energy and run hot.

You should plug in the laptop and set the power requirements to not sleep when plugged in. This will fully index the contents of the drive and you will be back to proper energy usage.

Lastly, I assume that you already reinstalled Sierra OSX?

Sync is a Dropbox alternative. Have them both. They are almost not active, because everything is synced. Spotlight has indexed everything this afternoon, so can't be using much. Activiteitenweergave is Activity Monitor, the app I have used most these last few days. Battery temperature now, according to Coconut Battery: 39,2 degrees C.

Yes I did a clean install of Sierra.

Either way they are using combined 3 watts per hour.

I have seen where when consumption is above 13 watts per hour it steps up the processor at a higher clock rate (processor stepping)

Try this:

disable Sync, Dropbox, and disable Time machine... validate through coconut battery that consumption is below 10 watts per hour

Charge it to 100 percent... Restart then reset SMC and PRAM... Boot it up to the desktop then put it to sleep and unplug it for an hour. Then open and do some light safari browsing. No Videos, no ad intensive sites, no facebook....

You just got it... So you need to break it in...

If you used migration assistant, you will want to reinstall sierra osx on existing disk partition, or consider deleting disk partition and doing a fresh install and not migrating anything over. Fresh out of the box it will need to index all the files.

Give it a week. If you purchased your device past November 10, you have much longer than 15 days to return it.

I had the same trouble with my MBP 15" 2016 base model, the second night of using it i woke up and checked if it fully charged, when i opened it i thought i can cook some eggs on it. Keyboard, touch bar and the place above the touch bar was really hot, and battery temperatures was like yours. The next day everything was fine except the battery life it was about 3-4 hours with only light browsing with safari. But today (im using this one from November 24), i really fell in love with this machine, i don't have any problems even with the battery, i can get 7-8 hours with medium and almost heavy use, and i think its 8-9 hours of light browsing with Safari.

Leo015, what do you mean when saying "freezing"? It was just freeze so you couldn't use it or what? When i'm opening launch pad and then opening the tab where Activity Monitor is placed, i can see that its opening not smoothly but with some kind of freezing or lag, like slideshow, you know. It's not so very annoying, so i can live with it. When i opening the Activity Monitor im having the same thing. You meant this or i'm wrong?

Here's the screenshot of my Activity Monitor

I have a 13" rMBP with Touch Bar, and I was disappointed with only 6-7 hours of battery life, with very light usage, out of the box. I set mine up as a new Mac. I've now had it for just over a week, and I'm now getting 8-9 hours. I am running the latest beta build of 10.12.2, and I have ran the battery through a few cycles of fully charged to powered down.

I haven't reinstalled macOS Sierra, reset SMC, or anything of that sort. I think this is more of a software/firmware issue that Apple is working out in the latest beta builds. It seems unlikely that so many new Macs would have faulty batteries. I've been purchasing Apple products for over 20 years, and I've never opened/received a defective unit out of the box.

Numerous people have stated that they are having the same issue with two successive new Macs. It just seems unlikely that anyone would receive two defective computers in a row...not impossible, but very unlikely.

Overall, this machine is an engineering and industrial design marvel. I'm very impressed.

I think we're talking about the same thing. But, why? My Macbook Air works perfectly even with much lower processor and without dGPU

P.S just updated xCode and spotlight just finished something to do which has been draining energy and now im about 4:03 estimated time.. Gonna fully load it and go to 0% and then fully charge it

@NYMunky: did it all : disabled Sync, Dropbox, TM was never on. Charged it to 100 percent, restart then reset SMC and PRAM. Booted it up to the desktop then put it to sleep and unplugged it for an hour. Then did some light safari browsing. A few seconds after restarting this was the result.

Ten minutes later, after the light browsing, it was getting very hot again, here are those results.

And I don't see al lot of activity but maybe I'm mistaken (also after ten minutes):
