2016 macbook pro 15" with touch bar poor battery life

I just received my new 15" MacBook Pro with touch bar. The battery life is horrible!!! I have Safari open with 6 tabs and with 95% battery, I am told that I have under 3 hours of battery life left! I thought these things were supposed to get 10 hours? I ran the battery down in 3 hours last night only browsing the web. I wasn't watching videos, just browsing. Is there something wrong with my laptop?

Hey everyone,

Received a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar 15" as well, and like several of you, was shocked by the short battery life, even with the software updates. After some extensive trial and error, I have remedied my battery woes! Sharing out in case it helps any of you.

The largest change in my case was as some suggested, an SMC reset AND a NVRAM Reset. After doing both, my time remaining shot from 3-4 hours to 9-10 hours and even longer with further tweaks. I was shocked, but was able to verify the change based on using the Battery Guru app. The Milliamp output has been cut nearly in half to ~600 and the machine is significantly cooler during light usage. See below.

A little background:

  • As mentioned, my average was 3-4 hours with light usage. This was playing Spotify, writing emails, and surfing Safari only.
  • I have been using Fruitjuice and Battery Guru to monitor and verify usage time and energy output. Both put the machine at roughly 3-4 hours of battery time and on BG, I had an average ~1100 Milliamp output.
  • Assuming the higher output was the screen, kept brightness to 75% and reduced keyboard lighting to its lowest setting.
  • Confirmed Spotlight, Photos and iCloud had finished indexing before making a judgement.
  • Even after all of the above, still 3-4 hours.

But then: I noticed something was amiss when charging the device. The last time I did so, I found the machine running hot and I noticed the fan was going nuts. That lead to the SMC and NVRam reset. After doing so, voila! 9-10+ hours of battery life!

But not only that, I've been able to extend the battery even more so, doing some additional suggestions that the forums have suggested.:

  • Revisited my startup apps in Login Items and removed things like Skype for Business, Adobe Creative Cloud and several update checkers. Though several of these were negligible, some suggested S4B and Adobe may be eating up more resources and some have reported improvements.
  • Due to the recharge incident, I decided to disable Power Nap while on battery. I'm going to see if I run into the issue again while Power Nap is on charge, will report if it occurs again.
  • Download Turbo Boost Switcher to disable Turbo Boost. I found this adds around an hour of battery life back and the milliamp output can drop around 400 during light usage. Performance doesn't seem to be affected when doing light usage. I turn it back on when I'm working on more intensive applications or plugged in.
  • I keep my keyboard lighting low and brightness around 75%.

Anyway, that's been my experience, and I'm now very happy with the machine and thrilled that I don't feel the battery anxiety I once had. It would seem that there is something glitchy in either the hardware and software still, but hopefully it's just a SMC/NVRAM reset fix for many.

Good luck out there.

Couldn't agree more. We're all trying to figure out what is going on. We don't have access to circuit diagrams, firmware or other low level diagnostic tools. So with a problem like this I doubt we can ever really know for sure. It's all guess work. Sometimes it's more educated, other times its more anecdotal, but it's all useful and helpful. Even if this place just gives people somewhere to vent and see like minded people suffering with similar issues, that's still helpful to some folks.

Keep guessing, and keeping helping each other. Maybe someone will spot something through guesswork and we can all go home.

Early days, perhaps, but after installing 10.12.2 and 40 minutes into a battery discharge test from a full charge I am showing a remaining capacity of 98% and an estimated run time of over 12 hours.

I'm running general productivity apps on the Mac itself and Windows 10 in VMware which is itself running fairly hungry development tools (Visual Studio 2015).

Too early to call as fixed yet, but from my own experience, looking positive. Based on this I encourage everyone to get the update installed and run a discharge test, then reporting findings here.

macOS 10.12.2 testing: 1 and half hours on battery with a varying load and I'm now down to 88% with estimated 10 hours remaining. This looks better.

If I increase the load and wait a little I get an increased rate of battery reduction, but a sensible one, in line with the mAh and mA consumption figures shown in system information. Likewise I eventually get a reduced estimate of time remaining, and again it seems sensible.

The opposite is also true. Reduce the load down to simple browsing and mail and the rate of battery drain slows down by a sensible amount. Estimate of longevity eventually increases and again sensible and in line with mA consumption figure.

So far it's completely believable. Will continue to monitor.

Since installing 10.12.2 I have not seen any improvement in battery life. What I have experienced though is weird performance sometimes (Slow for no reason, freezing for some seconds) and the Dock is being unresponsive. You can have a look if you like at these videos and screenshots

10.12.2 installed and ran the battery down to just under 20% remaining with browsing, videos etc. Achieved 9 hours straight on battery. So there was maybe enough to get to 11 hours on a full discharge - certainly the claimed 10.

Time remaining looked sensible all the way and the mA and mAh capacity figures matched to within a few percent of that according to my simplistic calculations.

Since 10.12.2 I've seen nothing to suggest that there is an issue remaining with battery estimate, but it's only been 1 day.

Same here. And it's getting very quiet here, so it looks like Apple has nailed it. Problem with me was the CPU-usage of the WindowServer, which was an incredible 130 percent constantly. It went down to some 8 percent yesterday with a fresh install of Sierra, but now with the new OS-version the usage is mostly beneath the 1,0 percent. The computer doesn't get overheated anymore either. Only the battery time is a little disappointing, with no significant activity it's no more than 8'50". Well, it's a bit better then my 2010 MBA, so I guess I should be pleased.

Recommendation for anyone still affected by this problem, no matter how your computer has behaved to up now. If you think your computer is already getting normal battery usage, there is no advantage to following these instructions.

Until I am sure that the Windows drivers aren't causing the problem this entire procedure should be done booting only into macOS (i.e. don't boot into Windows). I don't definitely know that the Windows' power management driver causes a problem, but I don't know it they doesn't. I understand that VMware runs under macOS, so that's fine.

  1. Plug in the power and make sure the computer shows the 'plugged-in' icon.
  2. Use the App Store to check that you're not being offered a macOS update. You should be running at least macOS 10.12.2. If a later update is available, install it, then check again. If you're part of the developer programme, you can use the version available to developers. If you're not, you can use the one available to everyone else. There is no difference between the two in regard to this problem.
  3. Reset the System Management Controller:
    1. Shut down
    2. Hold down the shift and control and option keys while pressing the power key to the right of the Touch Bar
    3. Release all keys, then press the power key again to boot the computer
  4. If the computer isn't already fully charged, allow the computer to top up the battery. You don't have to do this all in one go, just don't run the computer on battery power for longer than a minute until it shows 100%.
  5. Allow the battery to run all the way down. You don't have to do this all in one go, just refrain from plugging the computer in again until it hibernates of its own accord. You can do it quickly by running power-intensive apps, or slowly in your normal usage pattern, or any mixture of the two.
  6. Recharge the battery fully. You don't have to do this all in one go, just don't run the computer on battery power for longer than a minute or two until it shows 100%.

Return to using the computer as you would normally. You can now boot into Windows again if you want. After a day or so of allowing the computer to reassess its power curve you should find it has a reasonable battery life, in line with that advertised by Apple. If this is still not the case, please report it to Apple in the usual ways telling them that you have done the above procedure. Please note that nobody from Apple officially reads this list. Posting about a fault here does not report it to Apple.
