MacBook Pro 2016 touch bar randomly crashes

Hi,

I have recently been experiencing random crashes on my new MacBook Pro 13-inch 2016 touch bar.

Crash occurs randomly but usually it seems whilst watching a movie, downloading or transferring large files to external hard drives (usually at the same time).

Has this happened to someone else? Would appreciate some insight on this.

Error I am getting is this:

Sat Nov 26 13:34:22 2016

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6287U CPU @ 3.10GHz

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, 4 TBT3), macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

I feel SO IMPRESSED with posts like yours, Wim123. I see a lot of people taking this problem very lightly..."Would be nice to see this fixed by apple" or "only 1 crash a week" and sounds like you are happy and can deal with it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing you, it just surprises me that you all can be so permissive about this HUGE issue. Gentlemen, we have a 3k€ computer that randomly crashes and it is a DESIGN ISSUE. It is an issue existing since it was released and the have not been able to solve it in all these months. Do you really think they will be able to solve it in the future? Sure no.

Yesterday I sent my MacBook Pro 2016 Specd back to Apple, to get my money back. I want no repairs or replacement, I don't want to wait for a software update which, I can asure you, will never arrive. What I want is a properly working 3k€ computer.

Good luck to you all who have it, I hope I am wrong and I can buy one again as soon as possible but by now, I will wait with that money in my wallet and see what happens.

Regards guys!! 😀

My 15" late 2016 MBP does this periodically, but it isn't related to the 5k display - I don't have one. In fact, I haven't connected to an external display in days but I closed it two hours ago and when I opened the lid just now it booted from scratch rather than resuming from sleep - greeting me with the crash notice after I logged in.

This seems to happen randomly once or twice a month, maybe because I'm not connecting to an external 4k or 5k screen? It's not a show-stopper and, frankly, it doesn't interfere with my life much since it's only while the laptop should be sleeping. That said it would be nice to have that fixed.

15" MBPro, 10.12.3, 2.9GHz, 16GB, Radeon Pro 490 w/4GB. (in case that helps any)

Same here. Seems to happen for me when I plug in a USB-C thumb drive or a USB-C display cable into either port on the right side of the machine. 15" MBP 2.9 /Touch/460/1TB/16GB. Plugging into the ports of the left side of the machine does not cause a crash. Completely annoying for such an expensive machine.

Correction: This only happens for me when I have an external monitor attached and I plug a USB drive into a port on the same side of the machine.

STR:

Plug external monitor USB-C cable into any port

Plug USB-C thumb drive into port on same side of the machine. Note that nothing happens.

Unplug drive and plug it back into the same port. Machine crashes and reboots with reported error.

Unplug the external monitor and the problem does not take place, no matter how many times the thumb drive is inserted and removed.

Hi - I've actually gotten a replacement computer from apple, which seemed to work OK for a while, but after about 4 weeks it's started doing it again. interestingly, the error reporting (same MCA Error report) appears to have a completely different format... maybe they are trying to work it out... it's now showing the device tree.

However, following that, does anyone know if they actually look at the reports. I've been filing these for two months, and there doesn't appear to be any resolution...

If they did not solve this problem since October last year...it is not a reparable problem 😢 they also offered me a replacement but I denied it as I supposed it would make no difference, now I see I was right. I will wait for the next MBP generation and if I don't like it...I will make the switch to some windows pc 😟 Not good what apple is doing to professionals with their products, just focusing in the hipster market.

Demand your refunds guys, this won't be solved.

My 15" decided not to charge about two weeks ago so while at the Genius Bar I asked the tech about these problems. He said the crashing and occasional inability to find external monitors (mine does that) are known problems which Apple is working on fixing. No ETA, unfortunately.

As for the laptop not charging, reset of the SM Bus cured it immediately(COPS: Ctrl-Option-Power-Shift). It passed the in-depth diags and the problem has not come back.

YMMV

My 2016 15" MacBook Pro is on OS 10.12.4 and crashed with the following message:

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6920HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz, CPUID: 0x506E3)

CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

This happened while in the middle of an initial backup to an external HDD (LaCie, Porsche design). The drive is network attached, and the MBP was connected to the network via a third-party USB-C/Ethernet adapter. As I mentioned, the computer was in the middle of a first backup when someone closed it. The crash happened when I re-opened it.

This is actually my second (replacement) MBP. The first one had similar very frequent crashes although with very different error messages. The replacement computer worked perfectly fine for about 4 weeks until crashing.

I believe now that it has something to do with using the LaCie HDD and adapters. I don't think there is a point in exchanging this laptop too - the problem will just keep happening.

After I'm done with the initial backup, I'll switch to automatic backups over wifi. Hopefully with adapters & cables eliminated from the picture, the problem will go away.

It is not your adapter's fault, it is new MBP's fault.

Everybody trying to blame external devices, adapters, screens...when the real problem are the computers.

I am so impressed on how good Apple's marketing is...we prefer thinking is our fault rather than their fault.

It is an Apple computer, it just has to work.

I am working on a 2012 MPB retina until the new MBP is released...then I will decide what to do.

Don't get me wrong: I also think that there is a design flaw with the new generation of MBPs that so far Apple has been unable to fix or even make people aware of. At the same time, it seems that to trigger the problem, one has to be using a third party HDD or certain combinations of HDDs/adapters. For example, many people mentioned Porsche Designed LaCie HDDs.

I certainly would not recommend buying a new MBP until Apple sorts this out, or at least tells us for sure what external devices one has to avoid.

Same thing happened to me today. I'm running a Keynote presentation and plugged into a professional 4K video system via HDMI. The computer wasn't running the presentation and crashed while idle.

It gave me the following crash report header:

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6920HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz, CPUID: 0x506E3)

CATERR detected! No MCA data found.
