MacBook Pro 2016 touch bar randomly crashes

Hi,

I have recently been experiencing random crashes on my new MacBook Pro 13-inch 2016 touch bar.

Crash occurs randomly but usually it seems whilst watching a movie, downloading or transferring large files to external hard drives (usually at the same time).

Has this happened to someone else? Would appreciate some insight on this.

Error I am getting is this:

I have my MacBook Pro docked via USB-c to an lg38uc-99 monitor. Where I'm seeing random crashes is waking the MacBook Pro from sleep. It'll will either crash and reboot or freeze which requires a hard reset. This only occurs when the MacBook is shut closed (docked in a twelvesouth MacBook arc) and hooked up to the display. I can almost consistently reproduce this error. If this keeps up I'll have to see if I can return this.

This is the first report I see of issues waking up from sleep with a monitor different than the LG UltraFine 5K, that means the problem is not the monitor itself, it is the MacBook Pro.

You mentioned you have the TwelveSouth Arc to stand up the MacBook Pro, what model of MBP you have the 13" or 15", I was thinking on buying one as well, does it fit fine? I have the 15", thanks

I have the exact same model as you, I have the LG 5K as well, I did experience a lot of crashes related to sleep and wake from sleep with the MBP with Mac OS X 10.12.2 installed, since installing/updating to 10.12.3 about 3 weeks ago I have had only 1 single crash.

I have to say that I use the touch bar very lightly, most of the time the MBP is in clamshell mode with the 5K monitor connected. My current system uptime since my last reboot (not crash) is almost 9 days.

I have a late 2016 MacBook Pro 15 inch touchbar with an LG 38 inch curved display (LG 38UC99). I use the MacBook closed docked in a MacBook arc by twelvesouth. I went into the power energy saver and unchecked the option - prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off. The problem occurs when I try to wake the system the next day. I can't wake it up. I then open the laptop and try to wake it up that way. I can see the touchbar is on but the laptop display is black. I then disconnect the USB-c from the Display to the MacBook and still nothing. I hit the touchbar escape and still nothing. I try the finger print scan and also try to type my password numerous times but nothing happens. I then do a hard reset which appears to be the only thing to fix the issue.

I feel SO IMPRESSED with posts like yours, Wim123. I see a lot of people taking this problem very lightly..."Would be nice to see this fixed by apple" or "only 1 crash a week" and sounds like you are happy and can deal with it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing you, it just surprises me that you all can be so permissive about this HUGE issue. Gentlemen, we have a 3k€ computer that randomly crashes and it is a DESIGN ISSUE. It is an issue existing since it was released and the have not been able to solve it in all these months. Do you really think they will be able to solve it in the future? Sure no.

Yesterday I sent my MacBook Pro 2016 Specd back to Apple, to get my money back. I want no repairs or replacement, I don't want to wait for a software update which, I can asure you, will never arrive. What I want is a properly working 3k€ computer.

Good luck to you all who have it, I hope I am wrong and I can buy one again as soon as possible but by now, I will wait with that money in my wallet and see what happens.

Regards guys!! 😀

My 15" late 2016 MBP does this periodically, but it isn't related to the 5k display - I don't have one. In fact, I haven't connected to an external display in days but I closed it two hours ago and when I opened the lid just now it booted from scratch rather than resuming from sleep - greeting me with the crash notice after I logged in.

This seems to happen randomly once or twice a month, maybe because I'm not connecting to an external 4k or 5k screen? It's not a show-stopper and, frankly, it doesn't interfere with my life much since it's only while the laptop should be sleeping. That said it would be nice to have that fixed.

15" MBPro, 10.12.3, 2.9GHz, 16GB, Radeon Pro 490 w/4GB. (in case that helps any)

Same here. Seems to happen for me when I plug in a USB-C thumb drive or a USB-C display cable into either port on the right side of the machine. 15" MBP 2.9 /Touch/460/1TB/16GB. Plugging into the ports of the left side of the machine does not cause a crash. Completely annoying for such an expensive machine.

Correction: This only happens for me when I have an external monitor attached and I plug a USB drive into a port on the same side of the machine.

STR:

Plug external monitor USB-C cable into any port

Plug USB-C thumb drive into port on same side of the machine. Note that nothing happens.

Unplug drive and plug it back into the same port. Machine crashes and reboots with reported error.

Unplug the external monitor and the problem does not take place, no matter how many times the thumb drive is inserted and removed.

**Resolved**!

I did a re-install of the OS, downloading 10.12.3 from Apple. I installed with both external monitors and a USB-C drive plugged in. After the install, the crash no longer takes place when following the STR I reported earlier. Here's to hoping it works for others, as well as hoping it continues to work on my system. 🙂

Hi - I've actually gotten a replacement computer from apple, which seemed to work OK for a while, but after about 4 weeks it's started doing it again. interestingly, the error reporting (same MCA Error report) appears to have a completely different format... maybe they are trying to work it out... it's now showing the device tree.

However, following that, does anyone know if they actually look at the reports. I've been filing these for two months, and there doesn't appear to be any resolution...

If they did not solve this problem since October last year...it is not a reparable problem 😢 they also offered me a replacement but I denied it as I supposed it would make no difference, now I see I was right. I will wait for the next MBP generation and if I don't like it...I will make the switch to some windows pc 😟 Not good what apple is doing to professionals with their products, just focusing in the hipster market.

Demand your refunds guys, this won't be solved.

My 15" decided not to charge about two weeks ago so while at the Genius Bar I asked the tech about these problems. He said the crashing and occasional inability to find external monitors (mine does that) are known problems which Apple is working on fixing. No ETA, unfortunately.

As for the laptop not charging, reset of the SM Bus cured it immediately(COPS: Ctrl-Option-Power-Shift). It passed the in-depth diags and the problem has not come back.

YMMV
