MacBook Pro 2016 touch bar randomly crashes

Hi,

I have recently been experiencing random crashes on my new MacBook Pro 13-inch 2016 touch bar.

Crash occurs randomly but usually it seems whilst watching a movie, downloading or transferring large files to external hard drives (usually at the same time).

Has this happened to someone else? Would appreciate some insight on this.

Error I am getting is this:

Thanks!

I would like to know if in your opinion it could have any meaning to format the device or change of the computer.

The Mac, except for this problem, works perfectly. Formatting it would mean another half day of work lost in installing software and transferring data in addition to the time for formatting. If the problem is in the new update it will not solve the problem and I would have lost time for nothing. The same reasoning for a change of the Mac, which will make me lose even more time.

Thanks

I did a complete reformat and it didn't help at all. The latest macOS update seems to have reduced the problem by maybe 50% for me. Seems like about 1/2 the time I leave it alone for a while it won't wake back up without a hard reboot.

After the update I don't get panic errors or crash errors anymore. The display just stays black and the backlight keyboard light it on, but pressing keys or touching the trackpad does nothing to wake it back up.

I have been working with an Apple Senior support person and they have been pretty worthless. I keep sending them information and I don't get much for help out of them.

I preordered this thing the day they announced so I have been dealing with this for at least 3 months now. Apple got their money and its past the return time so it seems like they don't really care about resolving the issue.

Often coming back to my computer to find I have to log in with my password, because my machine has restarted.

I have this message:

I realised the problem was connected to the automatic graphical switching.

I had that option unticked and it crashed at every login either waking up from sleep mode and switching on. As soon as I ticked the option it stopped crashing at login, but as soon as I opened some software which required some strong graphic performance it did it again.

I explained this to the apple support and they said it was a hardware problem, so I sent it back and they are sending me a new one. I hope the problem would not be present on the new one but I have some doubts about it. To me it really seems an operative system problem.

I will keep you updated.

Same error on my new 15" touch bar MBP. It happens while sleeping, it happens while surfing the web, it happens while writing email, it happens while doing anything, or nothing (it even happens in Safe Mode!). I have erased and reinstalled the HD to no avail. Still same random crashes with same error log everyone else is getting. I've tried to narrow it down to a certain task, software, function, etc., but no luck. Sometimes it happens every minute or two! Ironically, I already wrote this reply once, but of course it froze in the middle of me hitting "post".

QUESTION: Has anyone had success getting their laptops replaced?

Feb 13, 2017 4:13 PM in response to klockw243

Apple senior advisers have made it clear to me (again and again as recent as today) that they won't replace or refund any hardware past the 14day window. It is irrelevant that these 2016 MacBook Pros crash daily for thousands and thousands of MacBook Pro Touchbook owners. Apple is fully aware this is happening but they don't have a solution (yet), so they won't offer replacements as it won't fix the problem. Sure after they put you through everything they will offer to send you to the Apple Store / Genius Bar (to waste your time) but if Apple's best Cupertino engineers can't fix the problem, what's the chance your local Genius has a solution?! It's awful, a month of Apple calls/emails with multiple senior support reps and all I have achieved is lost work, lost projects, lost hours, at least 100 dealing with system rebuilds, backups, error capture, error trapping, logging, Apple support phone calls, emails, etc.... total nightmare and I paid a premium + dongles for this "privilege".

Thanks for the answer, DataChris. So if they won't replace it, what will they do at the Apple Store in your experience? Will they attempt to repair it instead? My system freezes every 2-3 min. after rebooting with doing nothing more than running Safari or typing an email (and that's with a fresh install of Sierra and no third-party programs installed or peripherals connected). This is more of than just an inconvenience; I'm literally sitting here with a dead computer. Did I really just throw away $2500 plus a few hundred in adapters?

Feb 14, 2017 9:22 AM in response to klockw243

Hello guys, I am having the same problem in mi 15" 2016 model. "Luckily" I only have the problem on sleep mode, when waking up it restarts and closes all apps.

I just spent one hour at the phone with an Apple technician, telling me to press this and that key with my computer off...suposed to be purging electrical system and caches.

Reading you, I asume the problem will persist.

We will see.

@klockw243, can't say what Apple will do for your MacBook specifically because maybe you do have a one off hardware problem that could be fixed with a new machine. But on the whole, the full system MacBook Pro crashes that appear to occur (for most) only when connected an an external display, they don't have a solution to resolve the matter. They pretty much just stopped doing anything for me at this point because there's apparently nothing they can do. They won't refund, they won't replace. I'm just stuck with a $3k 2016 MacBook Pro crash bucket on top of a $1k LG 5k display that can't be used with any other laptop on the market. Add in dongles and taxes and I'm out $4500+. ********

HI,

I have just received my New MacBook Pro 15" with Touchbar on 8 Feb 2017. So far it has crashed 3 times that I know of. Eachtime the crash report states;

*** MCA Error Report ***

CPU Machine Check Architecture Error Dump (CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6920HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz, CPUID: 0x506E3)

CATERR detected! No MCA data found.

I have not had it connected to a 5K monitor. The latest crash occurred whilst the laptop was in sleep mode. I opened the lid, had to log in manually and was notified that it had crashed due to an error.

I am on the Beta program and will be sending a log that way as well.
