MacBook Pro (2016) audio problem

Hello,

I'm two weeks into using my new 2016 MacBook Pro w/ touchbar (15 inch) and am having an aggravating issue with the audio output. At some point throughout the day (every day) the audio on the MacBook ceases to work. It usually occurs after waking from sleep. It doesn't matter if I've been using or haven't been using headphones. It just won't work (across every application and with all settings normal in the system pref). The only way to resolve the issue is to log out of my user and log back in or restart the system completely.

Anyone else having this problem?

Same here, MBP 2016, 13'', TB. Seems like coreaudiod somehow gets killed and doesn't get restarted by the system, so sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist && sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist fixes it temporarily (no restart needed).

But yeah, it's really disturbing that Apple didn't address this ASAP, since it's not the cheapest product and the adequate support is supposed to be a big part of what we paid for. 😕

I have the same issue. Can't be certain under what circumstances it occurs because it just takes me by surprise and I think the volume is down, but it's not, and then I get confused and think, "Wait a minute this is a brand new premium Apple product: A 15" MacBook Pro with TouchBar... is it really a bug????" And after a few minutes of fiddling I realize, yes, the sound is dead. How did I get here?

Just now I managed to fix it by plugging in earbuds. Sound was working in earbuds but when I pulled them out there was no sound. I looked at the volume and it was all the way DOWN (which it was previously not). Turning up the volume worked.

(Also. My left arrow key is already messed up. Sort of half stuck)

I am having this exact same problem. It seems the combination of the 2016 macbook pro and sierra is buggy. I haven't been able to figure out what precisely causes the problem but it seems to have something to do with when the computer wakes from sleep (which, incidentally, seems to have another bug which is sometimes it takes like 20-30 seconds or so to wake from sleep while ordinarily it takes only 1-2 seconds), and the other thing I seem to be doing is switching audio away from either bluetooth or apple TV.

Three things that have fixed it for me are:

1) as suggested in this thread, unplug and plug back in the usb-c power cable

2) kill off the coreaudio processes (i.e., running "sudo killall coreaudiod") which eventually

gets the sound back.

3) cold reboot.

Huge help here, thanks. I knew there had to be a way to reset the audio drivers without rebooting.

Dear powers that be. When will this problem be resolved? I spent nearly $3,000 on this f@#$%^&*()ing machine and the audio doesn't work when I close and reopen the lid?

If I try to run the suggested command line snippets, I get the following notification -- Operation not permitted while System Integrity Protection is engaged

From what I can tell, I need to reboot the computer in recovery mode if I want to turn off System Integrity Protection, which also doesn't sound like a great idea...

Thoughts?

I have the same issue, unlock the screen and audio is disabled. I've found that unplugging my headphones and putting them back in brings it back. It is really annoying and a bit weak for a device of this price. @apple please fix, it's been months.

Apologies for the double post, I replied to the last comment rather than the OP and now can't delete the previous comment.

Hi - the following fix worked for me:

1. start a call (I use the "Audio Test Service" for situations like these)

2. in the call window click the settings icon (wheel) at the top right of the screen. (If selecting the settings icon doesn't do anything, try first selecting one of the other icons and then going back and selecting the settings icon/wheel).

3. A window will pop up. Under "Speakers" select the correct output (mine was set to "DisplayPort" instead of "Built-in Output").

That fixed it for me in any event - hope it works for you - good luck.

I'm having the same problem. It has happened several times now since I received my new 2016 MacBook Pro w/ touchbar (15 inch) on November 15.

  1. The first time I muted the computer and couldn't get it back on. It shows the button working toggling from mute to ON but no sound. The volume control doesn't work either.
  2. The second time it happened after using AirPlay. When I deactivated Airplay the sound wouldn't come back to the Macbook.
  3. Other times I haven't noticed when it happens, I realize I don't have sound when I pickup a Skype call or try to watch a video.

Same problem here. It has happened three time to me so far. I have the 15 inch with touch bar. I don't remember how I got it working the first time. The second time I unplugged the power cord and the plugged it back in and it worked. It's currently not working again, and unplugging it has not fixed the problem. I chatted with Apple yesterday to report the problem, although I already had it fixed. I'm going to call after work tonight to see if I can get some help.
