Slow Keychain on 2016 Macbook Pro with Touch Bar

Hello,

With the new Macbook Pro 2016 (Touch Bar) the keychain became very slow.

Any search query or even clicking on show password, will bring up the spinning wheel. Overall everything takes longer, I'm migrating from a Macbook 12".

Is this related to the use of the new chip with secure enclave, is anybody experiencing the same problem?

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, 4 TBT3), macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

I had a little more thinking about this. Since I am convinced that this has to do with the new hardware my guess is that the secure enclave is involved in the root of the problem. The secure enclave is used to store the information necessary when using the fingerprint scanner. This is part of the touchbar element which has it's own processor.

So, I tried disabling the Touch ID stuff and guess what - boom, everything works as expected. So, the current workaround is to disable Touch ID.

Since I use the MBP on an external monitor with a closed lid the Touch ID does not have any value other than gimmick for me and it has troubles reading my fingerprint accurately anyway I don't care too much.

Worst cases Apple can't fix it because the processor used to read out the secure enclave might just be too slow or there is some timeout involved accessing the secure enclave (to save power and reduce heat in that new part of the hardware).

Curious if this fixes it also for you?

So - someone posted in here 3 days ago that they installed macOS High Sierra 10.13 Beta 2 (17A291j) - and that resolved the issue.

They since deleted their comment - for some weird reason???

I'm here to confirm that I've installed macOS 10.13 Beta (17A291m) - and after rebooting - now not only does it hang when you load a Safari window, IT FREEZES ALL OF SAFARI UP.

The only solution is a force quit of Safari.

The disgust I have for Apple right now knows no bounds. I'm making an AppleStore appointment now and will not leave the store until I get this piece of crap returned.

just in case anyone is wondering: NO, the just released 10.12.6 release does not change anything regarding this problem.

And bug 28343236 ist still open on burgreport.apple.com. I'm going crazy. I'm not using Safari anymore, that solves part of the problem, however I can not do anything about the keychain app that I frequently use. It is dead slow. So slow that I run into timeout while typing because for each letter I type I get a 4sec beach ball...

pesatmichal, did you submit a bug report? This is the only way to tell Apple that there is a problem:

1) Got to https://bugreport.apple.com/

2) Open a new bug

3) Explain the problem. Make sure you mention that this happens on a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar when iCloud Keychain is enabled and that prior to migrating to the new MBP you did not have the problem.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Don't upgrade to the Public Beta 4 just released yesterday. I'm so ticked off at Apple right now I can't even. Public Beta 3 was FINALLY starting to work better with no lag in Safari. My computer auto-updated (just lovely) to the Public Beta 4 last night and we're STRAIGHT BACK IN ****. Worst performance ever...jamming up on every page.

Can't express how disgusted I am right now..... ******************

A quick update on this issue. I'm now running the last beta of 10.13 (build 17A330h), and here is the feedback.

-On safari, when accessing Other Passwords... it now works just fine, I can easily search through 1000+ passwords.

-On the keychain, when revealing a password it's seems faster the beach ball is still showing up but only for less than a second.

-Searching through the keychain is still slow (2-5s)

Hopefully the last part will be fixed with the release of 10.13...

In Safari 11 it is better, but the root problem is not solved. It seems Safari just caches all passwords from the keychain. Security wise this is certainly not a good idea but user experience wise it probably solves the problem for most. The password manager in Chrome still seems to be much quicker though.

When you open Keychain directly you will see that it is still ridiculously slow. In addition, the bug in apples bug database is still open and not resolved.

Keychain is unusable to me and I used to use it a lot. I had many encrypted notes in there with information I wanted to store safely. As apple did not solve this with a year a had to move to another password manager.

I have been experiencing this since getting the Mac. I updated to High Sierra which for some reason failed. I decided to completely wipe and have a clean install (via Internet Recovery) and all of these problems have gone away. Accessing keychain is now instant in Safari and in Keychain.

Might be a co-incidence but now mine is fully working.

Interesting. Just to confirm: you did restore the keychain from iCloud, it's not that your keychain is now a fresh one that is almost empty. In my experience the number of entries in the chain is directly correlated to the time it takes to look up something.

For me, update the High Sierra did not change anything in keychain. E.g. when I search for "apple" in the keychain it takes more than 6 seconds and the UI is blocked. In Safari things got better with Safari 11, but still a lot worse than how things are in Chrome.

Is my existing keychain, I have 269 Items on the iCloud Keychain and I don't have the energy to recreate. I setup going through the setup wizard as a new Mac (no transfer of data) and let it fully sync my iCloud account (everything enabled).

Im not sure if its the preinstalled Sierra thats causing the bug? I didn't do a clean install at all and was forced to when the High Sierra went wrong (told that it cannot be installed and needed to be recovered - so to avoid having further issues I wiped everything).
