What exactly were you trying to update to when you got the error?

If your Mac supports 10.12 Sierra, you need to update to 10.11 El Capitan First. You cannot go directly from Snow Leopard to Sierra.

Both updates are free.

10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion however need to be bought from the Apple Online store for $19.99 if you want them, but you don't need them.

It appears your MacBook is a 2009 > http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=MacBook6,1

The latest Mac operating system available is macOS Sierra. Minimum requirement for a MacBook is late 2009 or newer. See here.

But you would have to purchase and install OS X 10.7 Lionin order to upgrade to macOS Sierra.

Truthfully, running the newest macOS on a 2009 Mac... it may not be worth the trouble.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

No, you do not need to buy 10.7 Lion. You can upgrade from Snow Leopard to El Capitan for free, and from there to Sierra.

There is no requirement to buy anything.

Agreed. I have downloaded Yosemite with Snow Leopard, and installed it on an external HD. I've also installed Mavericks (ditto) from 10.6.8. If the machine will support it you can upgrade from Snow to the latest OS but you MUST upgrade Snow first to 10.6.8 if you haven't, as the App Store won't be supported.
