Ios 10.2 draining battery FAST!

I installed IOS 10.2 on 12/12/16. Phone was 100% charged at 7:00 pm; at 4:00 am on 12/13/16 the battery was completely discharged.

What changed in IOS 10.2 to affect battery usage like this?

iPhone SE, iOS 10.2

I agree with you. One need only to Google search "IOS 10.2 battery" to see the list of articles from various sources outlining how this is not isolated to only a small percentage of phones. I too have searched over the Net for battery saving tips, and nothing makes a difference. In fact, I find that it's actually getting worse as time goes on, regardless of the power saving features I use. My phone can sit on standby and drop 5% in an hour without ANY use. That is terrible! While my phone is getting close to 2.5 years old, and I have noticed my battery draining faster since first having it, it has never been like it has since the 10.2 update. With the battery indicator all over the place, I never know how much battery I truly have left since it often drops by 5-10% at any given point. I have also downloaded Coconut Battery to see if the battery may need replacing, however those readings have gone from 60% of the original charge to 90%. I had this exact same issue with my iPhone 5, and was forced to upgrade to the 6 prior to my contract expiring since the phone wouldn't last past 15 minutes on a charge. If the 6 can't handle the IOS update, then exempt it from further upgrades. I would sooner have that, than being stuck with an IOS that makes my phone unreliable. I am tempted to have the battery replaced, but don't want to go through the same thing with a new battery. With the posts from iPhone 7 users it doesn't seem to only be a hardware issue. It is clear that something is constantly running in the background, but it's buried somewhere in the coding that it's not available to find out what simply by looking up a list on the phone's settings. Not only that, the updates to the 7 were not enough to justify buying a new phone. Especially with the reported issues with the AirPods.

In other words, I'm with you Verndog-08!

How about googling "iOS 10.1 battery","iOS 10.0.1 battery" "iOS 9.1.3 battery", "iOS 9.1.2 battery", "iOS 8.0 battery", or, for that matter, "iOS 3.1.3 battery". Or any version back to 1.1. You will get a similar number of hits for any version you try. Googling a problem demonstrates NOTHING.

Similar issues have occurred for some users after every update that has ever come out - and also randomly between updates. So your choice is to complain about it, hope the next version will fix it (it probably won't), or troubleshoot to resolve the problem.

I have troubleshooted the problem as you put it. I have tried countless approaches and yet nothing changes. Disabled this, deleted that, all yielding similar results. I was hoping that someone might have actually found something that works instead of the suggestion that the only way I might be able to make it through the day on a single charge is if I disable every feature, and place it in airplane mode. I like all of my Apple products, but the fact that the battery issue has plagued all three of my iPhones is a colossal pain. It seems to be one product that is their achilles heel (Still trying figure out why they added a touch bar to the MacBook Pro instead of making it a touch screen like ALL the competitors?). My 3GS needed the battery replaced in 2.5 years, the 5 lasted just over 2, and now this is just over 2 years with the 6. Your point underscores that this is an ongoing issue for Apple, and instead of focusing on wireless headphones that no one really wanted, they should have been focusing on addressing battery life issues. Not simply paying lip service to it.

The problem is caused by a runaway app. It has nothing to do with any specific version or update,

Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer (12.5.3 as of the date of this post). Note

.....

One of these will fix the problem, unless it is a hardware problem or failing battery.

Classic example of someone "helping" that is part of the problem. First off 12.5.3 is NOT even the latest version of Itunes! Stop copy and pasting the same old crap that many have already tried, then stating it WILL solve the problem! Countless people have tried doing the complete re-install and it has NOT solved their problem. Just blowing it off as "all the other updates have this complaint" does not make it invalid (even if you could prove their was a similar response / issue which you cannot). Saying it has nothing to do with the update is not only irresponsible, it is down right being brain dead to what people are saying is happening and what they have tried with the same end results. I guess this is how you become "a level 8 offender" on this board.

I have found only one thing to actually make a difference. It's been suggested numerous times.

While iOS 10.2 is definitely a battery hog. Completely erasing EVERYTHING on your phone and reinstalling iOS WITHOUT doing a restore will actually improve the battery life!

I know, it *****. I didn't want to start over and reinstall apps I need etc... BUT it is the only solution that made a noticeable (albeit small) difference. DO NOT RESTORE YOURE iPHONE BACKUP! Instead erase all content and settings. Start over. It helps.

Jan 7, 2017 9:23 AM in response to Verndog-08

You are correct it is 12.5.4 but that should not make any difference.

Used my neighborhood coffee shop as a test group today and found 9 people that were running iOS 10.2. Seven reported seeing no change in battery usage, one said her battery life was improved with 10.2. One said they had horrible battery use when they first updated. Checked their usage and discovered Facebook was using an inordinate amount of battery even when they weren't using it. They turned off updates for the app and the battery life reverted back. They ended up deleting FB and reinstalling it and their battery problem was solved.

So which app or apps is sucking down your battery?

Jan 7, 2017 9:57 AM in response to deggie

Like I stated above. Siri!! Have an update for that "App" LOL? It was 85% of battery usage over 24 hours (when I never even used Siri then), and it's 60% over 7 days, and only going down now because I turned Siri off. For the record, I have used Siri less than 5 minutes over the last 7 days, and some of that was testing to watch battery drain. Using Siri did not cause this, when the phone is in standby is when Siri is draining my battery.

Jan 7, 2017 9:59 AM in response to Verndog-08

And when you contacted Apple did you tell them that? As I told you earlier I have never read here that Siri was a battery hog which would indicate some type of failure specific to your iPhone. Have 2 more added to my poll and they report no battery issues. I have Siri turned on, including Hey Siri and in the last 24 hours it is showing that Siri has used 3% of my battery. In the last 7 days it is 1%. If this was a bug in 10.2 it would show up in my usage like yours.

Yes this is correct. Manually downloading all apps you need from the App Store is a serious pain! ....but it helped, and in truth, I probably needed the purge.

Also, it is true that you can still leave all your contacts, photos, calandra events, etc in iCloud. Just don't do a full backup restore. (Still you might consider making a backup using iTunes just in case you realize later you deleted something important).

Jan 7, 2017 10:18 AM in response to deggie

For me it just depended on what app I used the most that day. There was no single culprit in my case. In fact, I don't even have the Facebook app and never have. I couldn't track down a single app, which is why I ended up erasing the entire phone without doing a restore of any kind (other than login to iCloud). This was the only thing that made a significant difference for me on my iPhone 6S.

Also worth noting, I have a hunch this only appears to be affecting 6 and 6S users. Not 7.

Jan 7, 2017 10:19 AM in response to deggie

That logic is failed. Just because we both have it and use it and mine fails and yours doesn't, does NOT take into account the 1000's of variables in useage, what version we updated from, which iphone we have...ect ect that could be a difference maker. Also, you need to keep reading. I've seen several people in just this thread alone that said turning Siri off helped them as well. Those that HAVE the problem are the ones doing the research, so it would be cool if those NOT having the problem would take a moment to understand what they are saying and not blow it off with copy and paste "solutions" causing these people even more frustration.
