The issue was not due to those reasons.

It was due to the watchOS 3.1.1 update having been pulled back by Apple, as explained within the previous replies in this thread.

A new update - watchOS 3.1.3 - has since been released by Apple and can be installed by following the steps here:

Update the software on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If necessary, to first delete a watchOS 3.1.1 update file that was downloaded, but never installed:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Usage > Software Update - delete the download.

Hello!

I was having the same issue and I found out through another forum that apple actually pulled out the update 3.1.1 because some users were having issues with it. They should be coming out with a new one! But that's why we can't update it.

Here's a link to an article on this too: http://appletoolbox.com/2016/12/apple-watchos-3-1-1-update-causing-problems-seri es-2-units/

Hey Sapiafi,

This issue is due to the AppleWatch only has 2.4Ghz WiFi capability. As most wireless networks use both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz in tandem, some networks divide the two connections or only provide 5 Ghz. (For example, some internet router-modems provide 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz as separate SSIDs, being separate connections).

There are two work arounds to this issue:

1. Change to 2.4Ghz Network.

If possible, connect only to your 2.4 Ghz band on your WiFi connection. This can be done by connecting to the non-"5G" connection on your WiFi, or disabling the 5Ghz antennae on your router. You must also forget your 5Ghz network, and reconnect to the 2.4Ghz band.
After this is done, restart your iPhone and AppleWatch. This will refresh the WiFi setting on the Apple Watch to be on the 2.4Ghz connection as the Watch mimics the WiFi connection settings of the iPhone.
The update should successfully install on the AppleWatch (granted the watch has 50% charge and is plugged in).

2. Unpair and Re-pair the AppleWatch

After downloading and unsuccessfully installing the AppleWatch update in the Watch app, proceed to unpair and re-pair the AppleWatch to the host iPhone.

This can be done by following these steps:

1. From the main menu of the Watch app, tap the image of the AppleWatch at the top of the menu.

2. In the following menu, tap the small circle containing an "i" within it.

3. In the following menu, choose "Unpair Apple Watch", and follow the unpair proccess.

During the unpair process, the AppleWatch will backup to the host iPhone and erase the watch. During the new setup of the AppleWatch after selecting the backup, during the sync process the AppleWatch will update from the update contained on the host iPhone.

Wallah!

Your AppleWatch should be updated after either work around.

Hope this helped,

-Tom

I understand that Apple pulled the update, but it was not for this specific issue, it was due to instability of the update.

This issue has occurred multiple times with my friend and occurs every update for me, as I have my network configured in a 2.4 and 5GHz divided network.

These steps are still relevant for any user having this issue, as many do. Even before and after 3.1.1.

On that note, I'm going to agree with the fact that it is because the update was removed. This is why people were unable to download the update. I here at home have both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios on my router. I have and never will connect my phone to my 2.4 GHz radio. Both of my radios in my router have completely different network names and unless my device is 2.4 GHz only I refuse to connect it to 2.4 as that is a much more crowded and unstable network as the 2.4 GHz bandwidth is too congested. That being said, I have never connected my phone to my 2.4 GHz radio and both updates (3.1.1 and 3.1.2) went flawlessly without me having to change a thing on my wireless network settings on my phone. The watch may not be 5 GHz compatible, but it gets what it needs from the phone.

What you need to do is remove the information from the 3.1.1 update and then update to 3.1.2 and you should be able to get it going and I doubt you are going to have to change any wireless configuration.

Hi Zintain,

My point is that I have observed this with multiple updates on multiple watches, it is not specifically and only 3.1.1.
In some cases and in my networks case, and in many separated-band routers cases, the 5 Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands are in separate subnets. This causes the AppleWatch to not see the iPhone on the same subnet, and the Watch reports to the updater that it is not connected to the internet.
The key word here is some cases. This is just another step of troubleshooting if this occurs for people, and it may occur in the future.

Sounds like your router has both bands on the same subnet, so you won't have this problem.

Apple did not pull the update for this issue. It instead showed this error message because it had pulled the update.

The technical support question and replies in this thread concern specific circumstances.

The OP's question concerned the error message that was shown to users who had downloaded the watchOS 3.1.1 update, but who had not yet installed it before it was pulled back by Apple.

The same error message was shown to all such users, including those who had no internet connectivity issues.

It served as a substitute error message for the real issue to which the question in this thread related, which neither of your suggested workarounds would have resolved.

Hi Sapiafi,

I had/have the same problem.

You could go on your iPhone to watch/general/use and delete the downloaded installer. According to this hint

But then the upgrade button shows some strange behavior, quickly showing OS3.1.1.. and then flicking into " 3.1.. your software is up to date".

My guess... this upgrade has/had a bug.. I think you/I/we..hehe should wait until apple fixes this.

Yours

Pierre
