After upgrade to 10.12.2 macbook pro has black screen

Last night I did upgrade my MBP in 10.12.2

While updating the MBP has launched a sound shrill and is locked for a while, but after a while he completed the update and I could use the Mac for the rest of the evening.

This morning, however, after boing Startup and the appearance of the apple, it appeared a black screen with only the visible white cursor and the Mac no longer worked.

I tried resetting the NVRAM, the SMC reset, but it did not do anything. When started in Safe Mode I can get to enter the password of my profile, but after still has to be black screen.

I rebooted into recovery mode to do a test to the system disk, but that's ok.

The problem continues as before.

I asked Apple service if it was a known issue and if they had a solution to give me, that was not to reinstall your MacOsX and recovering from a Time Machine backup, but they refused to give me information because the MacBook Pro obsolete.


It 'happened to someone else and was able to solve it?

The my mac configuration is:

MacBook Pro 13" early 2011, 16GB RAM, Startup Disk SSD Crucial MX500 1TB

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), macOS Sierra (10.12.2)

I've had this issue for over a month and, to make a very long story short, was on with apple support again today and guess what solved it? ENTER YOUR PASSWORD AGAIN.


That's it. I couldn't believe it.

They had me restart, which I did, and as soon a I entered my profile credentials my screen went black. He told me to enter my password again and it bloody worked.


And just a few minutes ago I woke it up from sleep. Guess what? black screen. I didn't panic, typed my password and it came to life.


This is an issue that they have now acknowledged that seems to be random with Sierra 10.12.2.

Tried this hack myself, but it didn't work. Possibly because there are so many exact instructions that have to be typed in that I messed one of them up. I eventually bit the bullet and did a Time Machine restore from 10.12.1. Took around 2 hours. Computer worked fine again. Then did two separate backups using CarbonCopyCloner. Disabled one of the CCC Tasks, so that the 10.12.1 backup would still be available. Then downloaded the Combo Update for 10.12.2. Reinstalled using it, and have since done multiple shutdowns and restarts, and computer seems to be working completely normal again. Still going to keep that extra CCC Backup in reserve, though!

I installed the update on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac. No problems on the MacBook, but I have the identical issue on the iMac. I tried every fix mentioned, finally restored from Time Machine, only to find the update downloaded and installed again during the night, and now I'm restoring again! I'll make sure to disable auto update when finished.

Knew it was too good to be true!!


As previously mentioned, restored Mac Mini late 2012 system from Time Machine. Worked great for the last 24 hours. (BTW, MacBook 2015 upgraded perfectly). But this afternoon, we had another power interruption, and though it was exceedingly brief according to my wife, the computer is now back to the original state after first upgrade using Delta upgrade. Thought Combo Update had done the trick, but obviously not so. Black screen, perfectly operating cursor, but no reaction to keyboard. Screensaver cranks up after 15 minutes, but then unable to exit it. Thanks goodness I had done a CCC backup with 10.12.1 and saved it. Was able to startup from that disk and am in process of restoring SSD back to 10.12.1. Will not proceed with another update to 10.12.2 until someone figures out what the solution REALLY is!

I'm frightful of this type of slip up after spending months waiting for my new 16 sleek looking mcprs this has forced me to return both, for all we know if a hacker was taking over our computer we would have no idea what's going on this is a major fail and I'm not happy it's taken more than a week for us to see and update to the .2 update. I can't use any of my six computers since I don't know what could be going on with them.

Might have found a fix for users experiencing a black screen on 10.12.2 with a visible curser:


- Start in safe mode (with computer off, push on button and release then upon hearing chime push shift until both apple logo and progress bar illuminate)


- Since the screen is blank or black, type the first letter of your username


- type your password (be accurate since you can't see your error)


- hit enter


- restart your computer (to get out of safe mode)

I tried what you suggested. Holding the Shift button down made the login page appear (although together with some white glitches). I typed the password and the black screen came again. I restarted but I returned into a black screen like nothing had happened.

Finally, I typed my password blindly (single user, so only typed password) and hit return and voila! the desktop reappeared!

Just found iMac with same issue during update of 10.12.2.

Nothing worked except to command-R boot into recovery modeand re-install Sierra. Even booted before that into SafeBoot and got log in. After logging in...desktop went black, cursor moves, Notifications slowly showed but nothing else.

It is taking really long ---60 Mins--- to do so far. Afterward, will download the combo updatet rather than allow Apple to push it again.
