AirPods disconnects on calls

AirPods pair correctly with iPhone 6s Plus (iOS 10.2) and randomly during the call they get disconnected. The BT connection gets lost and I have to connect them again manually.

Happens several times during long calls with no apparent pattern. The AirPods are fully charged.

The strange thing is that while listening to music, this problem doesn't show up, only on phone calls.

I installed 10.3b2 today and have had no drops when using both AirPods in a call - so far. I am using a 6s but not with an Apple Watch. Until this install, I could only have adequate phone call audio continuity when using a single AirPod (regardless which ear). All of this is also with updated AirPod firmware.

Just got a new AirPods and it's the same problem when it's paired with Apple Watch 0 series and iPhone 6s. Unpaired the Watch from iPhone have fixed the issue.

I think the problem is that Apple Watch keeps taking over the AirPods connection from iPhone. There should an option to pair/unpair AirPods to only one device (iPhone) rather than pairing/unpairing for all Apple devices with the same iCloud account. Or the Apple Watch OS should realize when iPhone is on a call with AirPods and not to steal the AirPods connection.

In order to verify wether this is a hardware problem or firmware issue, perform below steps:

Put left side airpod first. Once you hear the connection beep, wear right side airpod as well. Now play music on your airpods. Now cover your left side ear with your palm, you should be able to hear the music. Now cover your right side ear with your palm. You should not feel any sound quality degradation. After that, cover your both ears simultaneously with your palms. If one of airpod (either left or right) dropped the music (sound), this means you got a faulty pair of Airpods. Try to contact apple support ASAP for replacement.

You can cover one ear with your palm as tight as you can, still you wont get any signal loss. But the moment you cover both ears at same time, airpods will drop the music from either one of earphone.

I tried this on three different pairs of airpods, and only the one with sound/call problem acted this way. Then I called apple support and they scheduled appointment for me for tomorrow. But I am sure, this can be the missing link to the issues buyers are facing with their airpods.

I think whoever is reading this post will find the same problem with their airpods after trying the steps that I mentioned in my previous post, as they all landed to this page because they are facing problems with their airpods.

Took my AirPods, iPhone 7 Plus, and Apple Watch 2 on a 4 day business trip.

Results were mixed.

There was one call I couldn't initiate with the AirPods. I had to make the call using the iPhone, and if I tried to switch the audio to AirPods, the call stayed connected but there was no audio until I switched back to the phone.

Aside from that I had no problems with subsequent calls, even long ones. Music was perfect and it was great to fall asleep with no wires listening to the Naturespace app. Battery case was only down to 60% when I got home. Not bad considering I didn't charge it while on the trip at all.

Have the same issue with the following setup:

iPhone 6S Plus + Apple Watch Serie 0 + AirPods

When running iOS 10.2.1 I was unable to keep a call going through them when using both of them.

iOS 10.2.1 however did fix the Bluetooth disconnect issues with my car stereo (started to notice them on iOS 10.2.0).

Upgrading to the latest iOS beta (10.3 beta 2) this morning seems to fix most issues with my AirPods, including keeping a call connected when using both of them.

To me it looks like most AirPod issues are caused by bugs in the Bluetooth stack of iOS, luckily it looks like Apple is getting to the bottom of it now, it's just unfortunate that it takes them this long to get this sorted out.

I really miss the days that Apple products just worked...
