iPhone 6 (not 6s) shut down with iOS 10.2

Hello community,

I've noticed and recorded an issue that has come up a few times in recent days following iOS 10.2 update on iPhone 6. Also on an iPhone 5S.

Our household has 2 iPhone 6's in regular use (me & my wife), as well as my son with an iPhone 5s.

With about 30% available battery life available, the unit goes black, and essentially shut down.

When I hit the power button, or plug in the Lightning Connector cable with power on the other end (or into a MBP), I see the "No battery - red on one end", and white icons to plug in the cable screen.

This has happened on all of our devices with iOS 10.2. After plugging in for about a minute, the iPhone would come back to life with now 35% battery life. Kind of weird behavior.

I have two crash logs.. Yes, I'm an independent iOS developer who can get these logs easily.

Here's a portion of the two logs I mentioned from my iPhone 6:

As I mentioned, I'm an iOS developer and can post a bug report (radar), but thought I'd mention here to see if others were receiving this issue as well.

Thanks!

Got same issue here with a 6 - all good as long as I keep my battery above 70%, which makes the phone close to useless on many days. Phone is over 2 years old, and if I go to the SoftBank store here in Japan, they'll just tell me to sign a new contract, getting a 7 pretty much for free. But I'm reluctant to commit to another 2 years if the 7 is going to have same problems. This has to be a SW issue

Thanks for the follow up!

I do think it's heavily attributed to battery performance, and then possibly with the new iOS 10.2 which may be more demanding or not as efficient (don't know the best way to say that).

I'm going to mark your answer as solved my question, but I have no exact way of knowing 100%. At least if it comes to it, I'll go for a battery replacement.

I don't think it's typical battery drain or unreliable battery charging, from my own experience. It literally started almost overnight on two different phones in my household after the software update. Zero battery issues prior to the update. It still happens with our two replacement phones. It's also not like when your battery truly dies and everything just goes black instantly. The phone appears to shut off but you can tell the screen is still on (but showing black) for several seconds -- well beyond a typical battery failure.

Something is very wrong with these models. I just wish Apple would acknowledge it and give those of us with these lemons (four for me so far) a way to resolve it. Telling me to upgrade a phone that is less than two years old is not a solution.

Perhaps a class action lawsuit or pursuing action from the Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Protection Bureau, or Attorney General of the State of California may be.

i have a work iPhone 5s ame personal iPhone 6, both on 10.2. The 5s lasts for 3 days, the 6 consistently does this shut down thing everyone's been reporting in this thread.

husband has a 5c, no shut downs but battery draining faster.

i have replaced the battery on the 6 in the last 12 months and it only started in december.

no solutions to offer but hoping apple is monitoring ghe forum so they can work on a fix.

Yes, my wife's iPhone 6 has been doing this since 10.0 and I've been putting off replacing it because I think it is an iOS issue, but can't prove it. Apple tested the battery and said it checks fine. I have battery doctor and the readings there change from fine (normal) to horrible in a matter of minutes sometime. Phone is also getting to 30% much faster than before iOS 10. Here today looking others with this problem. But can't shake the idea that the battery is 2 years old so maybe there is something to Apple's position its time for a replacement battery.

My iPhone 6s was among those with the battery issue so took my phone to have the battery replaced on Saturday, 12/17. The phone worked fine afterwards until two days later on Monday... It shutdown randomly at 30%, I had to plug it into the charger to get it to come on. On Tuesday, it happened again around 45%, this time I called Apple Support because I felt that my batter hadn't been replaced. Apple Support tested the battery - they said it was fine. They suggested I plugged my phone into iTunes, back it up, reset it and restore from back up and they'd call me on Wednesday. Two hours later, it was complete. Wednesday, 50% at 12:20 PM, my phone did the same thing again, in the middle of a text, no apps open at all. Later on Wednesday around 5:40 PM, it did the same thing in the middle of a phone call, this time at 60 something percent. Apple Support called me shortly after, I explained what happened and he advised me to completely restore my phone as a brand new iPhone and he'd give me a call back in 24 hours. Again, last night, I did just that. About one hour later, I was in the middle of putting in alarms, contact ring tones, ect and my iPhone died at 73%! Charged it to 100% before work this morning. Same thing around 10 AM - died at 60% and then again this afternoon around 70%. Apple Support returned my call a few moments ago, I explained I've done everything - they're now sending me in on Monday, 12/26 for repair because they have no clue what's going on....

Mine is having the same issue. It's been happening for about a month now. Initially, it was happening at random at around 40%, but has been getting continuously worse. Today is the worst of them. It has been shutting off non stop. It seems that the battery percentage doesn't matter anymore. 90%, 80%, 60%, all have been shutting off. I've tried completely wiping and doing a factory reset, but it has not helped.

The weird thing with mine is that, before it started crashing, my battery would jump around while the phone was on. From 80 to 60 to 30 to 0. It would then shut off. When i plugged in and turned on immediately, the battery would display correctly again at around 60%. This is really frustrating. The phone is no longer usable.

Update on my issue: for one week I was on the phone everyday with Chris, a Senior Representative with Apple Support. After I had the battery replaced because mine was eligible, we reset my phone via iTunes and backed it up. Still didn't help, so the next day he had me reset the phone without the back up and without me downloading any apps. Next day, same problem. He called me and I told him it's still going on. My phone was barely out of warranty, three weeks, so he sent me to an Apple Store to replace my phone entirely. The rep there was rude and told me it was because I restored it from a faulty back up, I kindly advised him I've done it all 3x. He finally replaced my phone (even though the code from Apple was already in there to replace my phone!) since it is a 6s it didn't come with the new iOS 10.2 update so I've avoided doing the update completely until Apple fixes this. I think it's definitely their issue and if you're still in warranty, call Apple Support and go through all their ridiculous steps for a new phone OR try uninstalling the iOS 10.2 update.
