iPhone 6 (not 6s) shut down with iOS 10.2

Hello community,

I've noticed and recorded an issue that has come up a few times in recent days following iOS 10.2 update on iPhone 6. Also on an iPhone 5S.

Our household has 2 iPhone 6's in regular use (me & my wife), as well as my son with an iPhone 5s.

With about 30% available battery life available, the unit goes black, and essentially shut down.

When I hit the power button, or plug in the Lightning Connector cable with power on the other end (or into a MBP), I see the "No battery - red on one end", and white icons to plug in the cable screen.

This has happened on all of our devices with iOS 10.2. After plugging in for about a minute, the iPhone would come back to life with now 35% battery life. Kind of weird behavior.

I have two crash logs.. Yes, I'm an independent iOS developer who can get these logs easily.

Here's a portion of the two logs I mentioned from my iPhone 6:

As I mentioned, I'm an iOS developer and can post a bug report (radar), but thought I'd mention here to see if others were receiving this issue as well.

Thanks!

Over a week now on the "new" (actually Apple refurbished) iPhone 6 and end of problems. Wife is happy and getting full day battery and then some again. IDK, at this point I just suspect some of the iPhone 6 batteries are just poor / short-lived. As for the accounts of batteries jumping from xx% to shutdown, our iPhone 6 did this and I have seen this behavior in other devices with batteries that were bad. For what its worth. If reset to Factory / set up as new device doesn't work, you might consider the Apple offered battery replacement for US$79.

Glad that other iPhone 6 users are experiencing this shut down problem as thought it was just me. Have moved to a new country in Europe and every time I leave the apartment and use the phone it shuts down. If it is ios 10.2 what can we do about it? It's driving me mad and making this move even more stressful than it already is! Thanks for any tips, Alex (and Happy New Year!)

With my wife's 6, tried a complete wipe of the phone a couple of days ago. Erase all content and settings. Set up as new. No performance improvement. This was Apple's advice as some upgrades go awry for unknown reasons. So that leaves us battery replacement to try. Apple also think this is the right next step. Wife is kind of pushing for upgrade to 7 and just be done with the problematic phone. I want to replace battery and see if really does cure the problem. We will see where we end up in the coming week.

Ok, this time (the third) when I took phone to Apple, I made sure it was discharged a bit (about 70% remaining). When I took it in fully charged, Apple's diagnostic read battery as good on two occasions. But I knew better so tried this discharged state and Apple's diagnostic showed a bad battery this time.

So I told them I was ready to replace for $79. He went about entering the information and we chatted about the fact there was no problem before iOS 10 and could this be a coincidence. He didn't know but said issues like this increased after iOS 10 in his experience.

I asked him what happens if the issue persists beyond the battery replacement because I'm not sure its just a coincidence with the iOS 10 update. He said they would replace phone as next step within 90 days if problem persisted and this sounded good to me.

He finished entering the battery change request and his system told him to replace iPhone 6 today rather replacing battery. He didn't know why but speculated maybe someone in the system knows something more about this battery fast dying and cutting off for no apparent reason with somewhere between 30-50% battery life showing than he does.

So, I'm home with a replacement, Apple refurbished iPhone 6. I'm pretty sure that will solve my issues and will try to post in a week if battery life is normal again. If I forget it will be because there is no longer a problem.

Yes, I paid the $79 for a battery replacement, but their system told him to replace the phone rather than repair for that price. Can only speculate as to why.

I will say the sudden death syndrome (say 30% battery to iPhone off in a blink) is a common death spiral for batteries in my experience with iPods (4th and 5th gen). I would assume the same applies to iPhones but I resell those sooner. Its just that the timing with iPhone 6 and iOS 10 feels too coincidental for me given the battery life I got from other iOS devices since iPhone 1 was much longer than 2 years (3-4 years). I can't rule out I got a lemon this time either though.

Thanks for the reply UGADog.

I'm going to check out battery doctor. Which one do you use? I see a bunch

with that name.

I venture to guess Apple replaced your phone due to multiple visits to the store for the same reason and maintaining Good customer service. Smart to have brought the unit down with the battery in the ball park of shut down.

This is all great information for me going into 2017. I personally plan on upgrading to an iPhone 8 when it comes out (skipping over iPhone 7). The 6 has served me well (I also develop iOS apps with it).

Cheers, and thanks!

So, my wife and I each have iPhone 6 that are about 18 mos old. They started doing exactly the same thing starting in early December, then got progressively worse. Hers became wildly unreliable, and mine was getting worse and a problem because it is my main phone for work and would die anywhere between 70% to 20% instantly, with no warning.

We are out of warranty but have premium handset insurance through our carrier and they replaced both phones with refurbished iPhone 6 on 12/23 since it is an electrical malfunction or caused by misuse or damage.

Both of our replacement phones are now doing it again. Mine shut off 5 times within an hour yesterday, with no significant apps or other use. Just trying to send a text or view a website.

4 out of 4 have turned out to be lemons for us. Our neighbor is having the same problem and just did a warranty claim through Apple.

I believe it is either software related and they won't fess up to it, or it is a widespread battery issue that they are going to try to ride out.

Anyone remember the infamous antenna issue on one of the early models when Apple told people they were just holding the phones incorrectly -- rather than admitting the antenna design was flawed?

Also, I think it's SW because when the phone shuts down, it doesn't just die instantly like when the battery is truly dead. Usually I can see that the screen has power (as if it is displaying a black screen with the tiniest bit of backlight) for about 15 seconds before shutting off completely. Usually when I plug it back in, it will restart to the apple logo almost instantly without pressing the power button and display the same percentage I had before it **** down. Sure seems like a bug.

Come on, Apple. You are seriously losing confidence out here.....

Curious if anyone else out of warranty has been able to get anywhere.

Jan 8, 2017 7:36 AM in response to KraZdad

Mine does same. Mine is 6s and I've reset several times. It will go dead at 60 and 70 percent and not turn back on until I hook it up. Then comes back on showing 60-70 percent charged. It's really becoming an issue to me esp with a teenage driver in the household. They aren't going to trick me into upgrading bc this phone is practically new. Only thing the are going to do is make me go Samsung

Jan 10, 2017 12:34 AM in response to chinjazz

Hello,

I have Iphone 6. After IOS 10.2 upgrade battery percentage remains 100% and suddenly shut down after a while. I reset phone several times. I also tried two different battery in authorized apple repair shop but result is same. Unfortunately it happened 1 month later after warranty date. Is there any way to downgrade IOS or replace phone free of charge?

Thanks,

I m very dissopinted..... I'm not going to buy another device from that company.....same thing with iphone6 plus
