AirPort BRCM4360 crashes on 10.12.2

After recent update (maybe a coincidence) my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) started to crash randomly (black screen, fan boost -> shutdown) during Wi-Fi usage.

CrashReport logs indicate that the problem is Brcm4360 with the following message:

Dec 30 12:28:16.193676 +0300 000001.488872 Brcm4360<D>[0] [0x9bd25237a78c3d79][1][0] apple80211Request Get "APPLE80211_IOC_PHY_MODE" rejected while _powerState:0, pid[0]'kernel_task'

With Wi-Fi disabled the problem doesn't appear. I tried to go through the logs myself, but the main reason for why "Request Get "APPLE80211_IOC_PHY_MODE" rejected while _powerState:0," is still unknown for me.

Have anyone ever encountered anything similar or have any suggestions on how to fix this? Laptop is out of warranty, I believe for the time being I'll just remove broadcom adapter from the board altogether and use any usb-wifi dongle I can find, but would be good to see if anyone encountered similar problems before taking the laptop to repair.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Same problem on 2016 Retina MacBook. See below>>>>>

Re-produceable Broadcom 4360 driver crash on MacBook Retina 2016 12 inches (9,1) 8 GB RAM - 512 SSD

Have done the following steps to try and isolate this problem.

A - Reset NVRAM and Reset SMC

B - Erase and install macOS 10.12.4 of 10.12.5 and or 10.12.6 from Option + Command + R.

1 - setup to iCloud account.

2 - Wifi connection to home wifi Bell509ac - broadcasting auto a/b/g/n/ac channel 161 and country code Canada.

3 - close lid to sleep with wifi on

4 - open lid after 20 minutes sleep

5 - wifi connection re-established without delay

6 - check Console and find in Library / Logs CoreCapture Broadcom Driver crash with time stamp same time as wake time.

7 - Turn off wifi connection

8 - close lid - sleep 20 minutes

9 - open lid and turn on wifi

10 - wifi connection to Bell509ac established

11 - verify Console - NO Broadcom 4360 crash

12 - repeat steps 2 to 11 as above only connecting to Bell509 broadcasting auto a/b/g/n channel 2 and country code Canada

13 - NO Crash reports with wifi connection active and lid closed and sleeping.

Conclusion;

Broadcom 4360 driver crashes only when connected to ac channels and only with connection as active during sleep and wake periods.

What does Wireless Diagnostics show?

Also try turning off Bluetooth.

If your Wi-Fi source is capable of generating a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, try that to help avoid conflicts with Bluetooth.

Hello chris_g1,

Thank you for your suggestions.

>> when opening the lid to wake it from sleep

That's not the case, unfortunately. It crashes randomly, no connection with waking up/opening the lid.

>> To start, try resetting your SMC and NVRAM

>> If the issue continues, you may want to reinstall macOS

My bad, I didn't mention I already tried both SMC reset and NVRAM reset, as well as restoring from TimeMachine backup taken prior to update. Reinstalling the OS is the last step, but I can't see how exactly it can fix the issue right now.

Best regards,

I am having the same exact issue. This seems to be happening frequently as of recent (possibly new in 10.12.2). I am on the new late 2016 macbook pro 15" with touchbar.

I have the exact same behavior, although I am on a MacPro 6,1 (Late 2013) that started shortly after upgrading to 10.12..2. Locks up, or reboots, with the following in the crash log:

This has gotten to be quite problematic, with crashes occurring several times a day and only a hard reboot brings it back.

Thanks for your inputs guys, looks like this is becoming a common issue. Just to confirm and maybe save you some time so that you don't try to do this yourself:

1. NVRAM/PRAM reset - doesn't help

2. OS reinstallation + restoration from TimeMachine -> doesn't help

3. Full OS reinstallation (with wiping the drive clean) + restoration from TimeMachine -> doesn't help

4. Rolling back (via TimeMachine) to previous update (10.12.1) -> doesn't help

The only time it works stable and doesn't randomly reboot is while I'm booted with Ctrl+R to reinstall the OS for example, which is I believe is kind of a safe mode 🙂 Even if you use Wi-Fi heavily in this mode.

Same problem over here, randomly shuts down, running 10.12.4. All crashlogs start with "Request Get "APPLE80211_IOC_PHY_MODE" rejected while _powerState:0,"

Strangely enough for now it only seems to behave like this at home (ranging from once every few hours to several times an hour) behind my DLink wifi (DIR880 with ddwrt), have not seen it appear at work yet behind the apple airport...

I have the same problems, AirPort crashes and my 2013 MacBook Pro shuts down. I was searching the web and I found a similar topic where someone suggested replacing of AirPortBRCM4360.kext. I am unable to do it because this file is in use by another kext. I tried unloading AirPort.kext, terminal said that it is impossible but I got a notification that there is no network card so I tried reloading AirPort.kext and at the exact time I got kernel panic. I am not eggheaded, but for me this is quite strong evidence that this .kext file is the reason. Do you guys have any idea how can I replace this kext file? Neither manual methods nor kext utilities from the web worked.

Hi everyone affected by this issue, can you specify your WiFi situation? For me, I am using a 5G WiFi provided by Netgear R8000. My iMac 5K late 2014 shuts down itself automatically once or twice a day. After that, I have to unplug the power supply and then plug it back. Or the mac won't start again.

Yesterday, after I read all posts in this thread, I almost was about to contact the Apple's service, then I realized that I should give it another chance by using 2.4G WiFi. Although it is slow than 5G, but it is better than crashing.

So far, I have not experience another shutdown. However, since it has not up to 24 hours, it may comes again.

I post it here to invite you all to test on your own Mac, to see it works or not. I will update this post if it happens again.
