AirPort BRCM4360 crashes on 10.12.2

After recent update (maybe a coincidence) my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) started to crash randomly (black screen, fan boost -> shutdown) during Wi-Fi usage.

CrashReport logs indicate that the problem is Brcm4360 with the following message:

Dec 30 12:28:16.193676 +0300 000001.488872 Brcm4360<D>[0] [0x9bd25237a78c3d79][1][0] apple80211Request Get "APPLE80211_IOC_PHY_MODE" rejected while _powerState:0, pid[0]'kernel_task'

With Wi-Fi disabled the problem doesn't appear. I tried to go through the logs myself, but the main reason for why "Request Get "APPLE80211_IOC_PHY_MODE" rejected while _powerState:0," is still unknown for me.

Have anyone ever encountered anything similar or have any suggestions on how to fix this? Laptop is out of warranty, I believe for the time being I'll just remove broadcom adapter from the board altogether and use any usb-wifi dongle I can find, but would be good to see if anyone encountered similar problems before taking the laptop to repair.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Hi,

I was experiencing the very same issue as you (osx will crash randomly when Airport enabled, black screen, fan loud, need to hard shutdown).

I tried all SMC & PRAM reset stuff, even reinstalling osx from internet after wiping the SSD, the problem was still there.

The problem began after an update (about 10.12.2-3).

Since I own 2 retinas (that have problems one after the other) and since I spilled beer on my old one, I tried to exchange the Airport cards (mid2012 one vs mid2014 one) and the problem disappeared \o/

My mid 2014 rMBP with the old Airport is now able to use wireless without crashing.

Hope this helps.

Same problem on 2016 Retina MacBook. See below>>>>>

Re-produceable Broadcom 4360 driver crash on MacBook Retina 2016 12 inches (9,1) 8 GB RAM - 512 SSD

Have done the following steps to try and isolate this problem.

A - Reset NVRAM and Reset SMC

B - Erase and install macOS 10.12.4 of 10.12.5 and or 10.12.6 from Option + Command + R.

1 - setup to iCloud account.

2 - Wifi connection to home wifi Bell509ac - broadcasting auto a/b/g/n/ac channel 161 and country code Canada.

3 - close lid to sleep with wifi on

4 - open lid after 20 minutes sleep

5 - wifi connection re-established without delay

6 - check Console and find in Library / Logs CoreCapture Broadcom Driver crash with time stamp same time as wake time.

7 - Turn off wifi connection

8 - close lid - sleep 20 minutes

9 - open lid and turn on wifi

10 - wifi connection to Bell509ac established

11 - verify Console - NO Broadcom 4360 crash

12 - repeat steps 2 to 11 as above only connecting to Bell509 broadcasting auto a/b/g/n channel 2 and country code Canada

13 - NO Crash reports with wifi connection active and lid closed and sleeping.

Conclusion;

Broadcom 4360 driver crashes only when connected to ac channels and only with connection as active during sleep and wake periods.

Hi AlexyPonomarev,

I understand that when using Wi-Fi, your MacBook Pro crashes when opening the lid to wake it from sleep. I know it's important to have your MacBook Pro stay on reliably, so I'm happy to help.

To start, try resetting your SMC and NVRAM, which can often help when having issues with components like this:

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

If the issue continues, you may want to reinstall macOS. Just be sure to have a good backup first:
