iPhone 7 Plus: Callers can't hear me

Anytime I'm on the phone I can hear the other person fine but they can't hear me. They can only hear me when I have them on speaker phone. My phone is brand new, just got it about 2 weeks ago. I've tried everything to fix it (hard reset, volume controls, etc) and nothing helps. I've tried it in different areas using wifi and using my Verizon LTE network. Same thing. They say my phone sounds like scratching static unless I put them on speaker phone, then it stops. What's going on? :(

I found a solution for my iPhone 7. The OtterBox I was using on my iPhone 6 was blocking the rear microphone, a small black dot next to the camera, in the top left corner. It doesn't appear to be covering it, but it appears to be just enough to block it. I filed the OtterBox down just a bit in that area and it works just fine.

Hello Nsj3,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that while on phone calls, the other party cannot hear you or the sound quality is poor. I can surely understand you're concern, I wouldn't want to have all of my personal calls on speaker phone. I'm happy to help.

You've done a great job trying to resolve this so far. First, I recommend removing any cases, screen protectors, or covers and testing the issue again. If the issue persist check your microphones using the link below:

Have a fantastic day!

I have just received yet another replacement 7 Plus and once again people are struggling to hear me. That's with 2 different networks. Phone is not in a case, have tried noise cancelling on & off. Now, I also have an Honor 9 and a Galaxy S7 here and the same sims in those phones have no problem with call quality whatsoever. In the UK and I have tried a 3 sim and a Sky Mobile sim. It must be an issue with the hardware.

I'm on t-mobile, iPhone i7 plus, brand new. Here's what finally worked for me...ALL of the following. Now it works.

1. In Settings, make sure WIFI is turned ON

2. In Settings, turn OFF Noise Cancelling

3. In Settings, Set Enable LTE to Data Only

4. Hold top of phone near ear/head…angle voice receiver/bottom of phone away from face somewhat; don’t press phone like a slab against your head.

5. Speak firmly and kind of loud…but not abnormally loud. Don’t mumble.

I'm having this problem with an iPhone 6.

Try this as a test: find the back microphone (which is right next to the camera bump). Place a call, and try talking with a finger covering the back microphone, and without. I'm finding that with the back mic covered up, voice calls are crystal clear. With the finger not covering the back microphone, it's muffled.

Although this seems like a problem with noise cancellation, turning that feature on or off didn't help.

I recently had a Genius Bar appointment regarding this issue. I took with me 3 different network sims, all uk, 3, O2 and EE. The assistant allowed me to call him from outside the store so he could hear what I was trying to explain. He admitted with all 3 sims my voice was only clear when holding the phone horizontally to my mouth. Now the problem is my phone passed all diagnostics so they just blame the networks. I left the store without a replacement and am now thinking of an alternative.

I ended up calling tech support with the 7plus and laughed a little when he needed me to keep repeating myself. They told me when I get my phone today to not update it to 11. Don't waste your time with them. Get transfered to customer relations. They have the ability to give you a different model. If this one doesn't work I'm suppose to get an 8. I'll keep you updated.
