If your left or right AirPod stops working

Yesterday, I listened to a podcast with only my right AirPod. The left AirPod was in the case. I then charged both AirPods overnight.

This morning, the left AirPod refuses to work: no audio, no chime when inserted, and no Siri when double tapping. The right AirPod works fine.

I tried rebooting my iPhone, disconnecting and reconnecting the AirPods, and toggling on/off Automatic Ear detection in settings. Nothing has worked. I've used my AirPods for several days and this is the first problem that I have had.

Any suggestions?

Does not work for me.

80% of the time the left airpod does not work. I disconnect, reconnect, reset, turn off the phone, try on my macbook, a friend's phone, and I have the same issue.
Once in a while, it is the right airpod that does not work.

When I am lucky, 1 time out of 10, but AirPods work.

I believe so. This is an update. I found it unusual that the EXACT SAME PROBLEM happened on left earpiece #2. When I told everything to the gentleman at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and he agreed and replaced the case this time. Back to normal it's been a week. I am still under warranty so its inconvenient, but I'm glad it seems to have been resolved. To summarize: 2 left earpiece's no sound. Replaced first one (just the earpiece) problem resolved. Two weeks later same problem. Case replaced, all good. Yes, I did all the rebooting and reconnecting, trying different devices and it would not fix it. Seems it was the case. Hoping. Battery always read normal on both earpieces. These are my favorite bluetooth ear buds I hope this is the end of the problem. Also, if you go to accessibility in general settings you can pan left and right this was a big help. Hope this helps.

Hey guys,

My AirPods used to work pretty fine but when I bought and connect my new Apple Watch serie 3, the left AirPod started to fail... None of the previous suggestions worked on my case.

I tryied turning off the watch , connecting AirPods and then turning on watch again and it works.

I guess it’s something with the firmware maybe..

This is what I get with the Apple Watch connected:

UPDATE: I was able to fix my problem by disconnecting the AirPods from my iPhone ("forget this device" in settings) then reconnecting. But in reconnecting the AirPods you have to keep pressing and holding the Bluetooth setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes amber a few times and then finally flashes white.
It must flush amber first to fix the problem.

This method has worked for me on a number of occasions with multiple sets of AirPods. Problems seem rare (and have been when going between multiple devices (watch, phone, pad, etc.) but when they happen this is a quick fix.

Key is to hold-in the button for longer than you think... thru multiple color changes has never failed.

Good description, Dan, thanks!

I had the same problem with my AirPods. My issue was slightly different. I believe some dust had obstructed the contacts on the bottom of the left charging bay, so the left earpiece was simply out of juice.

After blowing air into it a few times, I left them in the case and plugged in the charging lightning cable and it started working again.

FINALLY I SOLVED MY MYSTERY PROBLEM WITH THE LEFT AIRPOD OR ANY OTHER LEFT EARPIECE NOT WORKING

Go to settings > General > Accessability .... make sure you are in the middle of L and R under “Phone Noise Cancellation” THIS WORKED FOR ME .... I hope it helps anybody else 😊 they must have reset themselves with the latest update 👍

Kind regards

Reconnecting seems to be a hit or miss fix...my first one didn't work no matter what I did...replaced under warranty at the Apple store...worked immediately and perfectly now it's happening a

gain...hope I don't have to replace this one. Here's a trick I learned, if you take the right AirPod, turn it upside down, it will fit better in your left ear..I originally thought maybe it was how I was putting it in...but my right AirPod would work in my left ear EVERY TIME PERFECTLY...so that led me to believe it wasn't my ear lol...and it wasn't...this new left one has been flawless since the day I got it...until this morning. I cleaned it hoping the sensor might have been dirty..don't know how I protect and care for these things!..despite the problems, this is BY FAR the best blue tooth ear phone I have ever had...and I have had quite a few very expensive ones. The only negatives are: Battery life could be better..I use them at work and I'm on hold a lot...and I still miss hitting a button to change songs. Tapping and asking Siri to do it works but?...wish there was like a tap sequence that would do these things. The positives far outweigh the negatives..sound..awesome..the fact that I can wear them and talk to people is huge..great hear - though ability...people can hear ME on the phone, everyone is amazed I'm on bluetooth...and I guess I have the right ears they don't fall out ever. I will be looking for some kind of accessory to hold them in though. OK now it seems I am getting low volume on the left one..already cleaned the metal screen..when I reposition it gets louder..and the right one works perfectly in the left ear...if a reset doesn't work this one is going back too...I hope not but they are still under warranty...

Thank you for sharing this information it was very very helpful I tried for getting the connection with the Bluetooth turning my phone off turning it on turn the Bluetooth off for a while turn the Bluetooth on it was not connecting with the left ear the right one would work right away it won't even connect the AirPods when I put the left one in my ear as I was researching and reading I found your advice very helpful I did not know to hold the button down long enough to get that light you do have to do it a couple of times nor did you get the amber light once I saw the amber light a connected right away in work perfectly thank you so much again for the advice I learned a lot from that little Sutton is that you devote it does must need to flash Amber in order for it to reconnect with both of the AirPods

Ok this can’t be a coincidence. We ALL HAVE THE LEFT AIRPOD stop working with a red exclamation???!? This sounds like quality control or a crappy product. To be honest I am very under impressed by this apple product. The charge is horrible. One run is all I get out of them. Switching from my phone to my watch is a pain. I have to disconnect them from my phone first. There are no controls. My non apple Bluetooth headphones were SO MUCH BETTER. plus they at least worked (both of them).

unfortunately, mine keep acting up. Sometimes they work for a short time, but mostly when I put the right one back to the case it just 'crashes' again. And often I can't even reset the case. Sometimes, 2 days later or so I finally can reset them and they work again for a short time. I guess that's hardware 1.0 means.

thanks...mine was set in the middle, I did turn the noise cancellation off to test however...mine are ok now...every once in a while it will re-appear, but rarely...this is a great place to know how to get to regardless...many times I stream music and one side won't sound right...as a musician it's good to know where the pan is on my devices....good info 🙂
