This finally solved my problem too. Turning up Bluetooth volume is done the same way as turning up the phone volume (side buttons on the iPhone) but has to be done while a call is in progress - ie while the Bluetooth is engaged! You will see it say Bluetooth volume on the phone screen when you do this. Turn the volume down on the car console (doesn’t have to be super low, just maybe below 40) and turn the Bluetooth volume up on the phone itself. This did finally solve my echo problem.
This in no way addressed the specific complaints on this thread. I too have a newer (2017) Highlander and a major echo problem with Bluetooth that makes my phone unusable in the car. I just switched from iPhone 7 to iPhone X and have the same problem. Toyota insists this is Apple’s problem. Please address.
Actually it is not just a Toyota issue. My girlfriend does NOT have a toyota truck, I believe she has a GM. But she does have an iPhone. We constantly get back echo when she uses her hands free even when I am sitting in my own home. And yes, I have an iPhone X.
I have this same problem. I have a 2015 highlander. I have used an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 8 and both echo badly.
Someone needs to find a solution to this. Can not use phone in the vehicle.
We had exactly the same scenario. 2013 to 2018. No echo to echo and same phone.
So Toyota points squarely to Apple; Apple to Toyota....UGH.
Come on Apple; aren’t we complaining loud enough? This is unacceptable! Certainly there are enough vehicle owners out there with this problem to get your attention!
My 2014 Highlander has the echo problem. Yesterday, I installed the latest update and the echo still persists for callers when I answer with the handsfree.
Silly me for thinking it was Apples fault.

Same here. ‘18 Highlander. iPhone X. Insanely annoying. I call my wife in her car and everything I say echoes. She says it is normal within the car. Whether I initiated or she called me.
To add to the mystery....I just took back a 2018 Corolla loaner which I had while my Highlander was being serviced. Guess what....no echo. How is this possible, Apple? FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!

Same problem. It is awful and Apple blames Toyota and Toyota blames Apple. I have completely wiped my phone clean and reset it three times now. Have iPhone X. Not happy.
