Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

Macbook Pro 2016 15'. I'm experiencing this random popping sound too (the videos in this thread "show" the issue pretty well). I don't think it has anything to do with warm up. I already chatted with Apple Support and they only recommended software solutions. Didn't want to try those and checked if anything could make the popping noise on my Macbook.

I might have found the source:

The screen / screen hinge. If I press on the in the middle of the screens backplate near the screen hinge (close to or on the edge) I hear a very similar popping sound. Works in opened and closed position.

Please check if this could be the source on your Macbook too and reply to this comment.

Same issue, mine is at the apple store for over three weeks now and they're waiting a response from the "engineering" team despite having heard the issue at the genius bar and media evidence I provided. I'll post another detailed description and their resolve once I have my computer back (who knows when at this point). Bought Feb 2017, manufactured Dec 2016. stock 2.7/455/512. Hasn't even been a month after purchase before it went to the Apple store for repair.

I am very disillusioned with this model of laptop, I have one of the previous generation and I have not had any problem, thanks to that I can work, I have had almost all the models of iphone that have come out and whenever I have had a problem I have it Solved, however now I have almost 2 months without a laptop and I'm afraid they will not solve it. In youtube there are several cases of keyboard changes up to 3 times and still have problems in some other key, with respect to the noises that are discussed in this post, no matter how much I look, I do not find anyone to solve it. Surely send me the laptop without fixing and say it is a visual defect, then I will record a video for youtube burning the laptop, if I get money with the publicity I will buy a notebook of another brand and I will not buy anything more apple in my life

I feel ya. I've had the macbook pro 2011 17" for 6 years before I feel the GPU is too weak for my need, so bought the latest and greatest. Who knew such a simple and innocent click/pop sound could be such a bother. The laptop was mainly used in a quiet office / library and it gotten to the point where I'd say it's an insanity-inducing machine. Imagine enduring a constant click/pop noise every 5-10mins when you're deep in your thoughts. I didn't even want to bother going to the apple store at first, but considering I'll be using the laptop for many years to come I bit the bullet. 3-5 days, turned to 3 weeks, now who knows. If I could get a refund I'd definitely do it, but my situation is more complex since I purchased the laptop overseas during holiday. The frustration has gotten so bad I had to call several apple rep until one "product specialist" agrees to take over the problem and gave me his personal contact so I don't have to re-explain the problem every time. Now it's still waiting for a reply from the engineering team, which as you said, and I have searched for extensively as well, has no solution at the moment. So here we all are with the latest and greatest and no real solution. It's funny how every single apple rep denies the problem.

I bought the new MacBook Pro just when it came out last year. I have the 15" version with a Radeon 460. It took a week or so when I heard the described popping/clacking sound for the first time and it also drove me mad.

I'm pretty sure that this is a problem related to heat expansion of the chassis or the display hinges. As some users described pressing the lower part of the display back also makes weird noises. This makes me think we have a manufacturing issue here.

I was going to go to the Apple Store to get a replacment/repair too, but then I read your reports here and realized that this is not something that is easily fixable by just replacing parts, but rather has to be fixed/redesigned higher up probably. What would be the best way to get this closer to deciders at Apple? The press does seem to have picked this up already (german outlets are already reporting about this issue), but is there anything more we can do?

It would be a shame to have paid so much money for compromised quality.

There are a large number of people affected by these problems, so I begin to think that is a widespread error, the problem is not that there is a failure, but is not giving any solution to the problem. If it were an iphone they would have solved it somehow, but people who send a repair laptop still have the same problems and that is desperate, because he spent a lot of money on this laptop and really is very expensive for what he offers in The benefits of what must be added that do not solve the problem and you have to add the time you lose without being able to use the laptop because you have the technical service.

It looks like several issues are described here. For example, my machine is definitely making the sounds from the speakers. Sometimes the left sometimes the right. In order to test my issue and allow the Genius guys to see it (hear it), I have played a 30 seconds test tones (100Hz, 250Hz, etc). After a minute or two, the popping sounds are more frequent, so it is easy to have a reproduction of the issue.

It seems that others describing mechanical noises, by pressing on the casing, which I don't experience. I would recommend everyone to take some time and try to find a solid way to show the problem to the Genius guys. Maybe then they will have more cases to work with.

This is my first true Apple computer I bought. It was previously too expensive for me to buy a Mac so I made myself a hackintosh and fell in love with the Mac OS. After I got my first salary I bought the new 2016 13" MacBook Pro and I loved it even more. 🙂

But after about 3 weeks of using it, the popping sound appeared... I guess the honeymoon period ended prematurely 😉 It used to occur only occasionally but now it's getting really annoying and very often.

The origin of the sound seems to be the bottom middle of the laptop screen. It sounds like there is some space in one of the hinges so it's sticking to something and it pops when it expands and gets unstuck or something. It often happens when the laptop gets warmer after some mild usage. The sound can also be replicated if I press lightly in the bottom middle area of the laptop screen.

I hope we start seeing solutions, because this is getting very annoying, especially when using the laptop in a quiet library...

I have faith in Apple that they will find what's causing this and offer to fix it. Fingers crossed...

This is exactly the conclusion I had come to as well, great minds and all...

My MBP 15" full spec has the same issue and it's only a few weeks old. I'm going to ask for a full money back upon return option and buy the Razor Blade Pro, I'd still have change to buy a few upgrades and a monitor with the fact that it STOMPS the MBP.

After 15 years of macs, I'm done...!

Apr 16, 2017 2:41 AM in response to urosch

I also have faith that apple solves the problem, but the people who have already taken the laptop to the technical service and have not solved it, we will have to take it back and waste our time once more.

I understand that a product can have problems, but the difference is how to solve it, if it were an iphone and would have solved the problem with some system was replaced

Apr 16, 2017 11:46 AM in response to Michael DN

I purchased the top of the line 15" MBP with 460 gpu, 2.7 i7, 1tb hd, et al, and just started having these same issues the last couple of weeks.

First noticed I when I'd pick up the closed laptop from the hinge or trackpad side, I'd hear a pop or clunk noise. Then that started to happen more frequently when I would pick it up, usually after the laptop has been sitting cold and closed and asleep.

Yesterday, while using the laptop (not intensely), and playing no music or sounds, I heard a random pop/crinkle noise, like a plastic bottle being crunched, from the left side of the laptop. I played some music to test, because it sounded like it came from the speaker. Lo and behold, the left speaker sounded blown (thin, tinny sound compared to what it used to sound like). Now, the left speaker works when it feels like it. Most of the time it's completely dead now.

Just today, I heard the SAME noise from the right side speaker, while using the laptop normally and not under any load. And same result, a blown right side speaker that now sounds like crap.

I called AppleCare and got a case number for all of these issues. I'm out of country until the end of the year, so I can't send it in or take to a store to get fixed until then. I don't have much faith that this $3500 laptop will make it.

I'm very disappointed in Apple. My Apple Watch, bought new in Dec 2015, also **** the bed. Heavily considering migrating away from their products if this can't get resolved. From the sounds of this thread, it sounds like the "geniuses" and Apple have no clue. I hope they are reading this.

I have the same issue, i went to the store and they told me it was caused by one of the buttons on the keyboard so they changed the whole topcase including the keyboard and battery. Now 2 weeks later i got it back and after + - 2 hours it did it again...

It also has nothing to do with the program you're using, even going trough your Facebook gives a 'pop' sound

Hope they figure this out, i'm feeling pretty angry because of the money i've spend on it.

Apr 18, 2017 3:28 AM in response to Michael DN

I have the same issue with my MBP 2016, 15inch, radeon 460, 4-5 clacks when heating up or cooling down (sometimes when the mac is powered off too), then nothing.

I brought to the genius bar 3 times. First time they replaced the fan: noise persisted. Second time they replaced the top case (speakers, fans, and trackpad of course included): noise persisted. Brought in third time they were convinced it was the hinges, but apparently now they say the 'engineering team' think it's a wrongful impulse by the trackpad, and they are working to find a solution. In the meanwhile there is apparently no solution.

I am pushing for a replacement but it seems they don't want to replace it. Which is a shame for a 3k mac covered by apple care. I'd expect them to try everything, including replacement, to let me have a flawless machine, but it seems apple is not anymore what it once was.

(I am still quite convinced it's the hinges, which means it may also happen that they could fix whatever they think it's wrong with the trackpad and the noise could persist. Which would be a colossal fail.)
