User account missing from login screen. Only ligin option is "Other"

My iMac running latest macOS Sierra completely froze. I forced a shutdown, waited 30 seconds, and restarted. The startup took several minutes and ended on a login screen defaulted to the "Other..." login account. I backed out of this to get to the top level account login screen, but my primary account is gone. The only login option is "Other..." How do I recover my account login? Thank you.

In the empty fields try to enter your I cloud id & password .

Have you turned on file vault ?

User uploaded file

Also as per article : macOS Sierra: Encrypt the contents of your Mac with FileVault

WARNING: Don’t forget your recovery key. If you turn on FileVault and then forget your login password and can’t reset it, and you also forget your recovery key, you won’t be able to log in and your files and settings will be lost forever.

And another method is there to reset the password :

How to reset the admin password , if one has forgotten it .

Close all applications & shut down the computer , and plug the charger .

Press command + R + power key simultaneously , don't release the keys until apple logo appears , the bar will load slowly , let it be completed after a while you will enter in recovery mode .if you have enabled firmware password , turn it off .

Take your cursor on top menu bar & click on utilities > open terminal from here & type resetpassword the word is single & no space , all alphabets are small .Click on enter & close the terminal window .

On the screen you will see user name of the account , just select it ( press forcefully on it to get selected ) > click on next on the bottom side .

A rectangular bar appears > enter your new password carefully and click on SAVE “. And again go to top menu bar you will see apple logo > click on restart .

You followed the first terminal command to hide your admin name , & to show the hidden user execute the second command .Right .

Hide a user account in the macOS login window

1. Log in as an admin user.

2. Use this Terminal command. Substitute the short name of the user that you want to hide for “hiddenuser”:

sudo dscl . create /Users/hiddenuser IsHidden 1

If you later want to show the hidden user, set the user’s IsHidden attribute to 0 like this:

sudo dscl . create /Users/hiddenuser IsHidden 0

If you want, you can delete the IsHidden attribute instead.

"In following command+R I can eventually get to Finder and see that my home directly is still there with all the content still present:

  1. command+r at startup
  2. exit default window
  3. menu bar > utilities
  4. Disk Utilities
  5. select HDD
  6. Restore
  7. image...
  8. Finder opens and I can navigate and see my home account folder.

"

You were in Restore (6), did you do the restore? Why not?

Thanks for the idea. I restarted in Safe Mode, but it resulted in the same login screen on top of my blurred-out desktop. The only login option I have is an "Other" account; it's not my normal account (which is missing) and it's not a separate Guest or Admin accounts (which I don't have enabled).

I have already manually tried my user name and password, but it's not accepted.

Thanks Lexiepex. Safe Mode didn't work. When I try to restore from Time Machine, I can find the local backup file for my iMac, but I get the message: "No macOS system backups were found." And... "Only complete backups of macOS appear in the list." I have TB backups going on a regular basis; am totally up the creek because I only have delta backups?

I'm making progress. I have been able to log into my iMac by creating a new Admin account (see link below):

https://www.macissues.com/2014/08/12/quickly-re-create-a-missing-admin-account-o n-your-mac/

When I login and go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, I can confirm the new admin account, but cannot see my still "missing" login account. my account home folder still appears in Finder, but it's not linked to my st login screen.

Any ideas what to do next? Thank you.
