iPhone headphones detected but no sound

My headphones will occasionally not play audio, even though the iPhone shows audio is playing and the headphones are the chosen output. For example, I'll be listening to a podcast, receive a call, unplug the headset to talk (or use headset microphone). Afterwards I'll plug the headphones back in, press play on the audio source app, but there is not audio coming through the headphones. Today, I tried a different app, it showed the audio was playing back, but no sounds out of the headset. A workaround is to power off and on the phone. After a restart, the headphones will work again. To generalize my problem, the iPhone doesn't seem to be switching audio output correctly. PS: Occasionally I'll have the similar, but different problem. I'll unplugged the headphones to receive a call, but the handset doesn't play the caller's audio. It seems like they hear me.

Exact same problem here with a recently acquired iPhone SE. Clearly something is wrong, I'd like to see Apple react. I have found by accident a fix other than hardware reset (which also works) which you may want to try: go to "settings", then "sound" then click on the button of the sound level adjustment, miraculously for me, sound came back in the headset !

Hi Nathan,

I understand that your headphones don't work reliably when unplugging them and then plugging them in again. I know it's important to have the audio on your iPhone working well, so I'm happy to help.

Be sure to go through all of the troubleshooting that you haven't already completed here:

I have the exact same problem! Ever since I updated my iPhone 6s to iOS 10. It has become more frequent in the last month. I contacted support last week and they had me try a recovery mode update to see if it was a software problem, but that didn't work. I would think it's a software problem because my iPhone was fine before iOS 10 and if it was hardware restarting it shouldn't change anything.

Were you ever able to get the problem sorted out?

Dear,

When I have an incoming call and Apple headphones are plugged, there is no sound from the headphones. When you return sound to speaker and again to headphones, the sound is ok. It's is obvious that this is a general issue according to users respond. Hard reset solve the issue for a day or so.Since ios10 and above the issue is permanent.

Thank you for any help your may have.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I tested with lightning earpods and also airpods and the problem does not happen ever. Definitely it is related to the headphone jack connection and obviously software bug. So Apple if you are listening, this is the thing that you need to think about for the solution. If you use the iPhone 7 lightning earpods for long phone calls and sometimes night time listening in bed like I do, you definitely need to be charging the phone at the same time using the same port, so the lighting earpods are out of the question. If you think that everyone is going to go to use the bluetooth style airpods, this is not good for long calls because the battery runs out so I have to keep swapping back to earpods to charge the airpods. Also, we appreciate how cutting edge you are in technology but many people are not convinced that bluetooth or wireless is completely safe to have for long periods next to your brain without any health repercussions in the future. Please don't move away from headphone jack just yet.

It's not likely, but it could be a hardware issue. For instance, if something is wrong with the headphone jack it might be temporarily resolved with an electrical reset of the jack. At least according to the senior tech at Apple.

But yeah, it's probably a software issue, caused by either a third party app or something the user does.

One theory I have is that it might have something to do with bluetooth. I don't think it has ever happened to me when bluetooth is activated. How about you guys?

I have never seen Apple respond in these threads.

Well, the fact that both you and me got our phones replaced tells me that Apple might not be aware of this problem. None of the support techs I spoke to had ever heard of it.

This is what I think: This seems to be a very uncommon problem, otherwise there would be dozens of threads like this online.

And since both my phones have had this problem there must either be something I do, or something I've downloaded that's causing this.

For instance: maybe it's a third party app that's causing it?

Because this problems occurs very randomly. It's been over two weeks since it happend to me now.

So it's hardly a hardware issue. It would happen a lot more frequently then, and to a lot more people.

Same here. Using iPhone 6. Tried multiple headsets, no change. Turn off. Turn on. Place a call. Repeat.

Lately it appears to happen less but maybe I'm using my headphones less often.

There were moments when I thought it may be a notification going off whilst the headphones are plugged in. Sometimes I thought it might be answering a call whilst listening to music via headphones. Tried to replicate both and couldn't.

Would be great if somebody with the same issue could try some lighting connector headphones and check if it stops.
