iPhone headphones detected but no sound

My headphones will occasionally not play audio, even though the iPhone shows audio is playing and the headphones are the chosen output. For example, I'll be listening to a podcast, receive a call, unplug the headset to talk (or use headset microphone). Afterwards I'll plug the headphones back in, press play on the audio source app, but there is not audio coming through the headphones. Today, I tried a different app, it showed the audio was playing back, but no sounds out of the headset. A workaround is to power off and on the phone. After a restart, the headphones will work again. To generalize my problem, the iPhone doesn't seem to be switching audio output correctly. PS: Occasionally I'll have the similar, but different problem. I'll unplugged the headphones to receive a call, but the handset doesn't play the caller's audio. It seems like they hear me.

Exact same problem here with a recently acquired iPhone SE. Clearly something is wrong, I'd like to see Apple react. I have found by accident a fix other than hardware reset (which also works) which you may want to try: go to "settings", then "sound" then click on the button of the sound level adjustment, miraculously for me, sound came back in the headset !
