iPhone headphones detected but no sound

My headphones will occasionally not play audio, even though the iPhone shows audio is playing and the headphones are the chosen output. For example, I'll be listening to a podcast, receive a call, unplug the headset to talk (or use headset microphone). Afterwards I'll plug the headphones back in, press play on the audio source app, but there is not audio coming through the headphones. Today, I tried a different app, it showed the audio was playing back, but no sounds out of the headset. A workaround is to power off and on the phone. After a restart, the headphones will work again. To generalize my problem, the iPhone doesn't seem to be switching audio output correctly. PS: Occasionally I'll have the similar, but different problem. I'll unplugged the headphones to receive a call, but the handset doesn't play the caller's audio. It seems like they hear me.

I have been seeing this issue since May. Twice when trying to make/ answer a call, once with a music app, and once with the Podcast app. It may have existed before, just that I did not happen to use the regular wired headset before. It does not look to be a hardware issue since turning off/ on the phone fixes it. I also need to try the 'accidental find' mentioned by another user here: turning up the ringer volume from settings.

I've had this issue a couple of times this spring/summer with an iPhone 6 running 10.3.1 and 10.3.2. The first time it happened, I rebooted and it solved the problem. The second time it happened I decided to try Lightning headphones and they worked even when there was no sound from the 3.5mm socket.

This might be coincidental, but the phone also made really loud noises out of the speaker when I tried to make phone calls. The next day the 3.5mm socket started working again and the loud speaker noises stopped as well (without a reboot).

I've been having the same issue - I often have my iPhone 6S (purchased July 2016) plugged into my AUX in my car via a 3.5mm jack input, playing music through Spotify.

Sometimes when driving after work, I pull over to call my girlfriend - I disconnect the phone, can hear her fine, and when we're done, I plug the phone back in and don't get any sound whatsoever from the AUX input or headphones. I have to always turn my phone off and on again.

It's even happened out of the blue where I'll take a call without disconnecting from the AUX, hear the person on the phone completely fine, then get nothing when it goes back to Spotify.

It's literally happened right now too. We were on the phone this morning, normally, but I needed to get on with something on my PC, so I plugged my headphones in - could hear her fine. As soon as we were done, I decided to put Spotify on and had no sound whatsoever. It still works when I unplug my headphones however.

Very frustrating issue - hopefully something gets done soon.

Must admit I'm glad I'm not the only one.

It doesn't look to be a hardware issue. So don't rush to repair the hardware. While the issue happens, I could hear the usual crackling in the headset while the jack is being inserted into the socket. If the hardware part on the phone was damaged, mostly that won't happen. Also, this issue was not seen on any of the 9.x versions of iOS that I used for about 8 months.

That reminds: has anyone shown this to an Apple shop, yet? What do their "Geniuses" say?

I hope that the "me too" count above on the original post (152 at the time of this writing) will prompt Apple to take it up in the next iOS update. Does anyone know whether Apple support/ engineering ever looks at issues reported here? Will some Apple representative respond in the interest of all of us reporting here?

I have same issue with my iPhone 6s and my headset being in and answering calls but I can't hear and they can't hear me. As soon as I turn speaker on I can hear and they can hear me then I turn speaker off and magically headset starts working. I'm on AT&T. AT&T ran all diagnostics and said it wasn't their service. They talked me into new iPhone 6s (and 24 more months of a lease) and issue occurred with new one. I did restore it from my old phone backup. So I sent new phone back.

My husbands iPhone 6s doesn't have the issue. I even have problem with no headset plugged. I answer a call and put it to my ear. No sound and no mic. As soon as I switch to speaker and switch back it works. Something with Apples iOS or maybe some app I have that's interfering. It's an intermittent for me but happens several times a day. 😑

All ~ Something to try

When your wired earphones are not working. Goto

Settings --> Sounds --> Ringers and Alerts slider bar.

Move the volume up or down the slider.

Try a call/playing music/podcast again.

Better than rebooting which I usually do, but still a pain.

Apple - it's apparent many have this - can we make it a formal bug and investigate it ??

Thanks

I upgraded my IPhone 6 to 6S one May,2017 then I updated the software to the latest version and then after a while it started this exact same issue of the audio for the songs and calls.

When on a call or making a call - if I switch to speaker phone or turn it on and off just for once then headset will start working.

Or else I have to reboot the whole phone to get it fixed

Then I went to the Apple Store they just replaced my phone thought it's a hardware problem (headphone port).

And after two weeks I have got the same issue with the second one after I updated to the newest version.

Just very annoying :(

Latest iOS 10.3.3 and this i still happening. If it happens during a phone call then activating and deactivating the external speaker will produce sound in your headphones.

But if the problem arises with the music app then you cannot resolve problem. Also happens for me when using Storytell.

Only thing that "solves" the problem is to turn off/on the iPhone. Not a very elegant solution and this definitely seems like it is a software issue.

Apple! Please respond and assure us that you see this problem as well and will fix it.
