Is iPhoto working on Sierra?
I'm going to migrate to Sierra and still using partly iPhoto. Therefore would want to make sure it still works there.
Thanks!

Only iPhoto 9.6.1 will work in Mac OS X 10.10.3 or newer. Getting this version requires previously having bought iPhoto from the Mac App Store, or associating a preloaded version of iPhoto with it.

Yes iPHoto 9.6.1 works on OS X Sierra -- but with some future upgrade it will stop and since Photos is equal to or better than iPhoto in nearly every way (it is new, has a learning curve and requires new work flows) it would be a good idea to take the time to learn it while you can still transition easily on your schedule rather than a forces emergency transition because iPhoto stopped working - the user Tips here give lots of help on the transition - Photos for Mac -- some of the ones of greatest interest include Details of how Photos handles the migration from iPhoto -- Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac -- Photos 2.0 vs iPhoto 9.6.1: Features and Capabilities

I have a mac mini late 2012 and I just upgraded to Sierra and have lost
iPhoto.
On Sierra you can run iPhoto 9.6.1. Which version did you have before the upgrade to Sierra?
If you had an older version of iPhoto, you may be able to update it to iPhoto 9.6.1, if your version is an AppStore version of iPhoto:
see Barney's user tip on how to update an older iPhoto '11 version:
Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store
I had over 4000 important photographs in my own special categories. I was scanning
slides for two years for a website.
iPhoto replaced the events by moments - otherwise the library will have migrated nearly identical to Photos (How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support). You will find your iPhoto events in a folder named "iPhoto Events" as albums. Categories are a new feature in Photos, that has not been available in Aperture or iPhoto. Photos will try to understand the contents of your using artificial intelligence and classify the photos into categories. It is just an added help when searching, because we can search for certain categories without having tagged the photo with keywords.
Hello,
Thanks for your detailed answer. I've now moved to Sierra.
As for the Photos I've had already migrated part of my library, and the reason I am reluctant to use it is that (I disagree with you) it has many regressions in term of functionalities compared to iPhoto given that it is made for basic users. Unfortunately aperture not existing anymore...
it has many regressions in term of functionalities
Well you need to explain since this is not correct - you simply need help learning or in modifying your workflows
and there is no way to migrate part of a library - migration is all or nothing
As for the Photos I've had already migrated part of my library,

I'm new here so I hope asking you is ok.?

I don't understand why everyone is happy that Photo moves all your pictures in the categories they like.
It doesn't make sense.
This can take me months or more to figure out how to use Photo and put them back in the fifty categories
I had them in.
Do you have any ideas how I can reorganize more quickly. Or whether I can do this at all.
I feel doomed.
Thanks,
Richard
Upgrading to Sierra does not remove iPhoto. So, unless you wiped the disk, it's still there somewhere.
You only have 4k photos and they are in "special categories"? How have you makes them into these categories? Albums? Folders? Events? Keywords?
The obvious way to do it is with Keywords.
Now you say that Photos has somehow moved the images? Where?
If you explain what the problem is accurately, then you have a good chance of solving the issue.
Plus, of course, unless you deleted it, iPhoto is still there. But remember it's no longer developed so you're going to be moving to some other app at some point anyway.
I'm confused. You asked me not to post more than one question. that's what I did: one question and four replies quickly too, very impressive!. Thanks.. There may have been some confusion when I first posted since the site is new, relatively, and I was in the wrong page.
Not to worry.
Answers to your questions:
I had about 25 categories that looked like folders in iPhoto. So I think they were folders. I only cared about knowing my "Sketches" were in a place called "Richard's Sketches" and my "Sculpture" was in that folder. They were specific for their destination.
When I opened Photo and saw the new categories like 'faces' for instance which I could care less about. I have to live with it but intensely dislike the software to think for me. I could care less about faces or memories so I will have to find another place to keep my pics. You helped alleviate my fear that I was in for months of work. I did find my 'folders' by hunting through Photo and here and there, I found them, but they were scattered about willy nilly. I will need, in the future a way to just have what I want in the place I want. I hope this is possible.
Thanks for helping me.
I had iPhoto 9.5.1 and couldn't find out how to get iPhoto 9.6.1 which is supposed to work with Sierra.
Richard and thanks again.
I think I answered all these questions below. Special Categories looked like a folder and I named them. For instance "Richard's Computer Art"- that was the main folder and there were sub folders that held several photos in that category. Some were just one folder with the photos in I wanted.
"If you explain what the problem is accurately, then you have a good chance of solving the issue."
Of course I know that silly> That's exactly what I did. Don't fret, so many terms and variables to keep up with.
"Now you say that Photos has somehow moved the images? Where?" I don't know. That is why I posted the question. Did you sleep well last night.??
If you don't like my posts, please do not help in the future. It's annoying and unnecessary. But I still like the support site. You are just the first person who sounded like he was just in a bad mood?? but I don't care for it. but thanks for trying.

I believe that you posted the same question in two places. Not the same thing.
Anyway, if you want to be rude, be rude. You're welcome. Good luck.
Too bad we are both so sensitive. I reread the exchange and I will take responsibility for my frustration, fear,
and confustion, but you share "rudeness" also and you are the expert. So rudeness is as rudeness does.
I never meant you any harm> and you have an attitude also. Your's is vindictive, mine was fear and confusion.
I had just upgraded to Sierra and was very worried that I lost my albums which would have been a nightmare.
No problem, you are not my only option. But you need to learn to be more considerate if you want to deal with the public. I did not appreciate your sarcasm which got the nonsense started. silly and nonsense. people. It's a waste of time and unfortunate.
So...be happy. I will too. and we can forget all about this. I figured all of it out from another 'expert' and I found all my answers. It's a good support community.
Lets face it,...these things happen. too bad it mushroomed unnecessarily.
Richard ❤️
Please show me where I was sarcastic in my first answer? Or vindictive?
Secondly, like everyone else here on this forum I'm just a user like you. So, while I see your comments about dealing with the general public you seem to not be aware that I am that same public. So, frankly, perhaps you need to take your own advice.
Hello,
Thanks for your swift answer!
Cheers,
.
