"insufficient bandwidth" error

I just tried a video iChat with my father yesterday. The video chats always failed (no matter who was doing the inviting) with an "insufficient bandwidth" error

He's got a Mac PowerBook G4 (not sure of the OS or the iChat version) and a cable modem with good speed (he checked it with the test at http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/ and got the typical cable modem listed results). He's also got a wireless system running, but I don't have any information about that.

I've got a MacBook Pro with DSL and good speed (I checked it with the test at http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/ and got the typical DSL listed results). I've got a wireless system in my house, but have always been able to video chat with my mother (on her iBook) and sister (on her PC) with no problems.

Any tips on correcting this problem?

I found a thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2415810&#2415810) that gave this as a fix for that error:

Set Quicktime preferences.
Goto System Preferences / Quicktime / Streaming and change streaming speed to your download speed (don't go higher than 1.5 mbps, get your down load speed from the test at the web site:
http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/).

Then goto iChat's prefences / video / bandwidth limit and change to NONE.

Does that look like the right fix.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi James,

It is a bit of a mystery.

Your Modem, if it routes, is much like a firewall.
If you call out the ports are allowed.
Calling to the appleu3testxx accounts is like calling through your firewall on the Mac if the port are set there.

It also seems that the test accounts are using UPnP to have the ports open at their end. This save then the trouble of opening specific ports. This means you do not bump into any NAT based problem either.

The appleu3testxx accounts also do not seem to have any Denial of Service settings meaning there is no secondary check by their Modem or similar device on the speed or amount of data coming to them.

This last is the most likely cause for most people.

My dad (Insight/cable 3Mbps up / 900Kbps down, PowerBook G4, 10.4.8 and iChat 3.1.6) has opened the ports on the router and had local success: they video chatted with a guy (on DSL) in the same town.

But when we tried (me in CA, him in IL) we still couldn't connect. Here's the error message:

Here's the recap:

We've done the Quicktime bandwidth fix.

I can video chat with my mom (DSL, iBook 10.3.9, iChat 2.1.x, in AZ) and my sister (PC, DSL, Trillian Pro in IL).

We can both video chat with all the appleu3test0x "channels".

We get error-22 all the time when we try video chatting with each other.

One other funny thing, even though both my dad and myself have 10.4.8 and 3.1.6 I don't see him as able to do multiple video chats.

So what's the solution?

Thanks Ralph.

I'm still confused as to how one gets the Apple test
video chats to work if the ports are "closed."

Hi James,

It has considerable better chances of connecting cause it doesn't disconnect when your upload video fails or has insufficient bandwidth. The downloadspeed is set to optimized iChat connectivity. The audio is encoded in the video so that is one tricky port problem less.

Thanks Jan. That explains what's going on with that. Though it doesn't seem to have quite the intended purpose. If those channels are meant to be a good test of iChat, then all those "fixes" you mention serve to make it a poor test.

Hi James,

This is part of the SIP stuff that happens on port 5060
This is your ID for this SIP connection.

It lists your LAN IP (It should) and I can tell that it is most likely an Airport Base Station.

Can you tell me if this is still in default mode ?
If it is it does DHCP and NAT ( a easy set up version of NAT where the ports do not need to be set).

It will mean you also have a modem of some sort.
I need to know if that can route as well (Do DHCP) ?

If so is it doing Port Forwarding or other NAT based port opening method ? (some Cable modems can not route).

This bit from way down the log suggests that the scenario I suggest of two devices doing NAT is happing as the ports move to none iChat ones which is a common feature of using NAT in two devices at one end.

Hi James,

If you do have two devices doing NAT this will explain the differences and the appleu3testxx accounts do not seem to be using NAT (most likely UPnP), where as if your Buddy is using NAT it is getting confused.

Your Log says that your were nearly connected as the SIP invite is marked as ACK (Acknowledge) before the new try with the ports changed.

UGH! I'm going to start off this message with some venting! Why will iChat work some times (with my mom and my sister, or my dad and his local friend) and not other times (my dad and myself)? It seems like it should always work or not. UGH!

Now to your points Ralph (thanks again), yes I have an Airport Base Station (as well as two Expresses). As far as I know it's in the default mode, I ran only the minimal set up software.

I've got a DSL modem that I don't know much about. There's no router in the modem, at least as far as I know: it's is not wireless, it has one ethernet cable out, so that seems like a non-routing modem to me. But what do I know?

Now here's the complicating part, between the modem and the Airport Base Station I have an SMC wireless router (for a lot of stupid reasons). I've set up port forwarding on the SMC done pretty much this way: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7804WBRB/iChat.htm
and, again, the system works when I video chat with my mother or sister. Why wouldn't it work with video chats with my dad?

So does this mean that there are two devices doing NAT? And if so, does it mean that taking the SMC out of the loop will solve everything?

Jan 26, 2007 1:02 PM in response to James Elliott1

Hi James,

Ok.

Tell us clearly what ports are open to what device in your set up please.

Modem (is this a Cable service one ? and make and model) <-> SMC (We know this is port Forwarding but to what IP ?) <-> Airport Base Station (What is this set to ? IS is getting an IP from the SMC ?)<-> Express1 and Express2 (Are these set to "Join an Existing network ?) <-> Computers (can you confirm the computers are at this level ?)

Again without the questions
Modem <-> SMC <-> Airport Base Station <-> Expresses <-> computers.

The IP from the log suggests
Modem <-> SMC <-> Airport Base Station <-> Computer (possibly because the Expresses were added or turned on after the computer was turned on.

If set up even like the second scenario then you look like you have two lots of NAT going on.

It is a bit hit an miss but the more NAT there is going on the more likely there is going to be a problem

On this page it says this SMC can do UPnP.
Disable the Port Triggering and set it to UPnP.

If you do this and the modem is in Bridge mode (Does not route) then the Airport Base Station can be left in default mode (As long as the Expresses are set to join an Existing network if you computer is beyond the Expresses).
This would then be one level of NAT.

We/I will need to know which devices are doing DHCP (you should only have one device doing this unless you want specific subnets).

I'll get all the informaiton I can about the modem, SMC, computers etc. this evening after I get home. I'll either switch the SMC from port forwarding to UPnP or just do away with the SMC altogether.

Still the question that begs to be answered is: Why does iChat work consistently (with whatever configuration I have) when I video chat with some people (my mom and sister) and consistently fail when I video chat with others (my father)?

Jan 27, 2007 1:46 AM in response to James Elliott1

Hi James,

It is about the way each end is set up.

If both ends are using NAT based methods to open the ports (Port Forwarding, Port Triggering or DMZ) then there are more likely to be problems.

As the appleu3test accounts seem to work with anyone then the logic is that they are not using NAT.

That is the most likely reason beyond them not having their end set up properly.

Errm,

There is however there are some modems that are factory ready for SIP (And VoIP phone services) that do weird things with port 5060 which iChat also needs.

The modem is a SpeedStream 5360 Ethernet ADSL modem (by Efficient Networks, DSL connection via SBCglobal.net or whatever their name is now with ~1.2 Mbps download and ~275 Kbps upload) with no routing. The only set up I do is plug it in, plug in the input telephone line, the output ether net cable and turn it on.

The ports on the SMC are set as follows (see also the screen capture here:

Trigger Port | Trigger Type | Public Port | Public Type | Enable

The computer at the end of all this is a MacBook Pro: OS 10.4.8, 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

I'm not sure that answers all the questions, but that's as close as I can come now.
