"insufficient bandwidth" error

I just tried a video iChat with my father yesterday. The video chats always failed (no matter who was doing the inviting) with an "insufficient bandwidth" error

He's got a Mac PowerBook G4 (not sure of the OS or the iChat version) and a cable modem with good speed (he checked it with the test at http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/ and got the typical cable modem listed results). He's also got a wireless system running, but I don't have any information about that.

I've got a MacBook Pro with DSL and good speed (I checked it with the test at http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/ and got the typical DSL listed results). I've got a wireless system in my house, but have always been able to video chat with my mother (on her iBook) and sister (on her PC) with no problems.

Any tips on correcting this problem?

I found a thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2415810&#2415810) that gave this as a fix for that error:

Set Quicktime preferences.
Goto System Preferences / Quicktime / Streaming and change streaming speed to your download speed (don't go higher than 1.5 mbps, get your down load speed from the test at the web site:
http://www.theedge.ca/myspeed/).

Then goto iChat's prefences / video / bandwidth limit and change to NONE.

Does that look like the right fix.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Tony,

Is yours a WBR or a VWBR

It's a SMC7004VWBR, at least that's what is printed on the front and bottom of the router.

All the figures on the page you mentioned ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/windowsmessenger/expert/SMC7004VWBR.msp x)
look almost identical to what I see, with just a few differences, namely I don't see DDNS and UPnP on the menu to the left.

Take a look at the a screen capture of what I see ( http://homepage.mac.com/jbelliott/.Pictures/SMC-front.jpg) and compare it to what is shown on the page you mentioned ) http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/windowsxp/images/using/windowsmessen ger/expert/AdvSetup_SMC7004VWBR.jpg) to see the similarities and differences.

I don't see anything like what's shown for the SMC7004WBR on this page: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7004WBR/iChat.htm

This page shows what I see: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7004VWBR/iChat.htm , though not what I did, which is shown here: http://homepage.mac.com/jbelliott/.Pictures/ports-new.jpg

However, when you compare the Advanced Setup page I see ( http://homepage.mac.com/jbelliott/.Pictures/SMC-front.jpg) with the one they show ( http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7004VWBR/7004VWBR3.jp g) and the port forwarding page I see ( http://homepage.mac.com/jbelliott/.Pictures/ports-new.jpg) with the one they show ( http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7004VWBR/7004VWBR4.jp g) there are differences. Also note that the menu on the left is not consistent in that figures on this page http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_triggering/SMC/7004VWBR/iChat.htm

As for the firmware, I don't know. I'm at work and will check tonight, though I'm not sure where to look. Any help on that?

Ralph,
In the set up you suggested (which I've done) will multiple computers be able to work off of the Airport end of things at the same time?

Thanks to everyone!

Hi

Go here http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=downloads.searchCriteria&localeCode=EN_USA to get the firmware, then goto "STEP 1 - CHOOSE PRODUCT INFORMATION" the choose "Broadband routers" then choose "SMC7004VWBR" then you will need part number http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=whereToFindPartNumber&localeCode=EN_USA then goto "STEP 2 - WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DOWNLOAD?" choose firmware.

The manual you pointed out ( http://www.smc.com/files/AQ/MN7004VWBR_MNREV.pdf) looks exactly like what I see when I look at the physical router and the setup software.

I'll look into upgrading the firmware this evening.

So if I upgrade and can change to UPnP, should I:
(1) delete all the port forwarding stuff on the router?
(2) change the settings on the Aiport?
