Connect to 2 devices simultaneously with AirPod?

I'm responding to this because I'm actually using my iPhone X with the right EarPod and im using the left EarPod with my Mac computer. I can't really explain how and to why its working but I think its pretty awesome. The left EarPod was in the charger at the moment I had the right ear synced to my phone somehow the left one did not change it's sync when I put it out of the case because previously they both were locked to the Mac. I'm guessing because I had the right pod out of the case and connected it to the iPhone X and maybe because the left was in the case closed it did not switch over. The Mac and iPhone both were recently updated to the current software update so maybe it's a glitch and either way I'm loving it!

.....some devices do exactly that....I can sit with my B&W headphones and listen to music on my Mac...if a call comes in on my iPhone, it auto switches... I have 2 phones too..... they work far better than my AirPods ( which I am constantly frustrated by)....

AirPods connect to iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time, with sound switching between the devices automatically.

Otherwise, AirPods can only connect to one device at a time.

no device I ever heard of support connecting to 2 separate a2dp devices at once

and no a2dp headset ever supported being connected to by more then one device at the time

so in the eyes of the device connecting the 2 AirPods would likely be viewed as 1

Well, officially, it may be the case that AirPods are not supposed to connect to your iPhone AND your Mac, but I've be able to do just this. My iPhone 6s Plus running iOS 10.3.1 and my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2015) running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.4 have twice been connected simultaneously; R AirPod to my iPhone and L AirPod to my Mac each with completely different content playing. R AirPod was connected to a Google HangOut and the L AirPods was connected to a Twit TV broadcast over my Chrome browser.

The process of connecting appears to be following where the iPhone and Mac have already been paired previously to both devices.

0) With both AirPods starting in the charger case.

1) Connect the R AirPod to my iPhone. Then put it into the charger case.

2) Pull the L AirPod out of the case put it in my ear and immediately connect to my Macs.

3) With the L AirPod connected and working pull the R AirPod from the charger and place in your ear. The R AirPod will automatically connect back to the iPhone while the L AirPod remains connected to the Mac.

The following configuration has worked twice over the last few days. I only used this configuration for 10 to 20 minutes while astroturfing my desk. I have no idea what made this work or whether it's reliable.

i am not familiar with the term a2dp, however i have a few bluetooth headsets that when connected to one device, if a second device is added... the are both then joined. i even get the "second device connected" notification. now i have never attempted to talk on two seperate calls at the same time, but i hear both devices (gets a little confusing.) devices are an iphone 7 and macbook air and recently new macbook pro

The Bose QC35s connect to 2 devices at the same time. I absolutely love my AirPods but really wish they could connect to a Mac and an iPhone at the same time. When I'm at my desk, I like to listen to music and control it through my Mac, but also have it connected to my iPhone so that when I get a phone call, I can easily switch. Now I have to battery drain my iPhone listening to music so that I can use the call functionality.

I have the Bose Soundsport headsphone and it connects with my iPhone 6s and iPhone 7. If I'm listening to music on the 6s and a call comes in on my 7 it still works . Was hoping the airpods would be similar but doesn't look like it.

It is 100% possible, Unfortunately I do not know how to. Today I was watching a movie on my mac with one AirPod and I put another one in for better sound but it connected to my iPhone instead. I had a movie from my mac in my left ear and music from my iPhone on the right. 100% sure this is a bug but it is 100% possible.

I agree. I can connect my two I Phones with Plantronics Edge. Apple has done something to not allow an I phone to stay connected to Plantronics. Thus I decided to try AirPods. But they cannot connect to both phones at the same time. My Edge worked great with my old Blackberry phone I just had to give up. Frustrating to not be able to use technology.

No. I want to have both personal and business phone turned on. If either rings, the Plantronics Edge tells me by name who is calling. I can say answer and we talk. If I am talking on phone, if I get a second call on the other phone, I can answer or ignore. Now with the AirPod, I can only have one phone connected at a time. So would have to juggle turning one phone off and the other on while driving or wherever if the one rings that is not connected. That makes the AirPod worthless to use.

So then you should sell the AirPods and keep the Plantronics Edge. Easy decision. Perhaps in the future Apple will make a larger version of the AirPods that has a larger battery and can support two BT receiver/transmitters. To most people, especially Apple's target market, this is not a big deal.

But the Edge does not stay connected to the Apple phones on a stable basis like it did the Blackberry phone. So it is not a good solution either. I have spoken with others that say non-apple Bluetooth are not stable with I Phones. I would say 50 percent of the time the Edge cuts off in conversation when connected to IPhone. The Edge was just a couple months old. I guess I may use AirPods part of the time and Edge part of the time pending what I am doing.

I accident found out the same method like yours. And, its work.

One time, I connected one of my airpod to my right ear and left my car and went far away.

I noticed that my airpod will working. So, I think the charger wouldnt matter of the distance, but only the current airpod you are wearing.

So, I decided to connect my wife iphone to the left airpod. And, I walked far away and try to connect the right airpod to my phone.

We both after that can speak on the airpod now.
