Connect to 2 devices simultaneously with AirPod?

I would like to connect one airpod to my iPhone 6s, and the other to my Mac.

So far, I have found that simply connecting first to one device and then to another does not work: the first device is disconnected from both AirPods, and the second one is given control of both AirPods.

This also means that it's impossible to connect both AirPods simultaneously to two devices, as you can with any other recent (Bluetooth 2) device. For example, I'd like to listen to directions from my GPS, and if a phone call comes in, I'd like control to transfer automatically to my phone until the call is over, then have it revert to the GPS.

Has anyone found a way to do either a simultaneous connection to two devices, or connect one AirPod to one device, while the other AirPod is connected to a different device?

Hi

AirPods connect to iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time, with sound switching between the devices automatically.

Otherwise, AirPods can only connect to one device at a time.
