iPad tv app Not working offline?

So the new tv app on iPad will not open if not connected to internet. Downloaded some movies. I get on plane and it says error not connected to internet try again. Then screen stays white. What is going on? The reason I rented movies was to watch on plane when not connected to internet. Frustrated.

This is a major bug in the new iOS TV App.

Update.

Airplane mode only works if you haven't completely turned off your device from the last time you were connected and had the app open.

Apple support was able to confirm the problem and said the engineers are working on this but for now, the only work around is to connect to wifi (use your iPhone as a hot spot if wifi isn't available), open the app, turn off wifi or go into airplane mode and then put the unit to sleep instead of turning it off completely if you're going to need to access the TV app when no wifi is available.

This has been a nuisance since the new app and while it might be great for the Apple TV its kind of making the iPad paper weight. The previous app also had concurrent play for tv shows that made it so much easier while working and not having to remember what episode was next or had watched, it was certainly a plus to have such a feature so hopefully you can restore some of those neat gimmicks that got me to buy all these movies I can't play now. Thank you.

You probably turned off the iPad instead of just letting it sleep. Apple has acknowledged that there is a bug in the TV app (which is new) which requires an initial internet connection after the device has been turned off before it will allow you to play any videos.

Even if there were no bug, Apple's treatment of "Home Sharing" content is pathetic across their entire product line.

A better approach is to stop buying DRM-encumbered content.

A little hard to do since every downloaded movie/tv show and discs you buy have some level of DRM protection encryption.

Unless you are obtaining your movie/TV content illegally or circumventing the DRM encryption from the discs which is a big gray area that we cannot discuss here.
