Update Billing Address in Apple Pay

I've been unable to change the billing address shown on my iPad in Apple Pay. I've read many other previous posts about the same issue but there wasn't any resolution. All of my Apple services have been updated to my new address. Apple ID, iTunes, etc. The card issuers have the correct information and on my phone the address was updated correctly in the Apple Screen for the same cards.

But trying to edit the address on my iPad does not work. The correct address is shown as an option but selecting it does not stick. It always reverts back to the old one. Under shipping address the correct one is showing. Has anyone found a sure fire resolution for this? I'm on the latest software releases on each device and my contact card(me) only has the new, current address.

As many of us have discovered the address that was originally associated with a card stored in Apple Pay is retained in iCloud no matter what you do. I’m assuming that the number of us affected this way is small enough to not be getting more attention. The only sure fire ways to solve this is either create a new iCloud account to use as your primary which will contain your current/correct information and then proceed to set up Apple Pay again or do as I and others have done. Request a new card with a new account number from the bank which had the old addresses populating the Apple Pay fields. Getting a new device, wiping and restoring as new, none of that will work. As soon as you sign into your current iCloud account that address will come back.

I had my bank do this. I deleted the old card, added the new one, you have to be careful because the old one will be offered as an option, just ignore that and opt to add the new one. Apple Pay will then pick up your address from your contact card, hopefully you have it correct there. That address is also verified through the bank as the card gets authorized. Once that’s done you are good, the old address will no longer appear. However it’s quite possible that if we move again the current address will stick with that card and we’ll have to do this again. But I won’t be moving for a long time.

Anyway even though it is a hassle it currently is the only way to finally cure this and it has been a cure for me now through OS updates and multiple restarts, my old address is nowhere to be seen. And for me this was far less of a hassle than creating a new iCloud account/Apple ID.

I may have found a less intrusive workaround... I worked with Apple Support and they suggested that I create a new contact in my contacts list. Then go to "Settings > Contacts" and change "My Info" to the new contact. Then change the billing address for the Apple Pay credit card. This workaround seems to solve my problem at least... which is a relief because I've been dealing with this problem for years. You have to copy over all your contact info, and update any Siri relationships, but still not too painful a workaround.

FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION!!

Couldn’t delete old billing addresses or phone numbers but this worked for me. It seems to have to do with it being linked to your own contact on your phone.

Steps I took were:

1) Go to your contacts and find the one tagged as “me”, I.e. settings -> contacts -> my info

2) Edit this contact from your contacts list with the correct information and remove old addresses and phone numbers.

3) Near the bottom it may say “linked iCloud” accounts, you can edit these or I just “unlinked” them

4) Go back to settings -> Apple Pay and you can click through and edit the billing address for a card. Now after I did steps 1-3 I am able to delete the old billing address and Poof! It’s gone!

I hope this works for you!

Yes, it seems to be an issue with Contacts. Editing your contact card may work although you may find after you restart your device that the old address returns. If so, what seems to be the permanent solution is to create a new contact card and make this your “me” card duplicating the correct info from the the old card and then deleting the old card.

I had tried just just changing the address info in my card by editing it but while I was able to delete the old address from Apple Pay data, it returned after a device restart or iOS update. Just completely eliminating that card and creating a new one seems to be the permanent solution. However for me I had my bank issue me a new card with new account number. That turned out to be the permanent fix for me.

It’s funny that I thought I had conquered the problem in iOS 10 by editing my contact card. But iOS 11 brought it back and caused it to appear on my iPad Pro when it had previously only been an issue on my phone. That’s why I just gave up and had a new credit card issued. No problem since. But then saw the post above about deleting the current “me” contact card and creating a new one. That does seem to pinpoint the problem to iCloud contacts. Perhaps one of the iOS updates corrupted the card causing that old address to stick around. Deleting it and creating a new one gets rid of the corrupted data.

My method of getting a new credit card fixed this for me but if I move again my current address may stick to that card. If so then I’ll create a new contact card and delete my current one. When I went to my bank to get a new credit card issued the rep told me I could just edit the address in Apple Pay settings. I let her do it, then restarted my phone to show her how the old address had just come right back. She immediately processed my new card request.

That is definitely a better option. And it also points to Contacts as being the potential source of the problem. The one thing I would also check is to reboot your device and then see if the correct address remains. iOS 11 added a new wrinkle to the issue for me. Occasionally I was able to make the address change and have it hold but restarting the device always brought it back.

If yours remains correct, give it through one more software update to make certain, you should post this in several places. It certainly would point a finger at Contacts/iCloud as the cause. Good job at coming up with this!

There's another long thread about this also. I have 2 cards from 2 different banks verified and in use for Apple Pay on 3 devices, Watch, phone, and iPad. The same 2 cards are verified on my wife's 3 devices, the cards are my accounts. On all 6 devices we changed the billing address to our new home after we moved in December. Of 6 devices only my iPad reverts back to our previous address. The other 5 were straight forward, change home address on our contact cards, go to Apple Pay and select the new address that is now showing and delete the previous one.

I have done a restore of the device and every other thing I can think of but that old address continues to come back on that iPad. At this point I'm assuming only replacing this iPad, which I am planning to do when new models are announced, will correct this. From my experience and all the others that have commented it's like our previous address is somehow hard wired into the device hardware itself. I don't know how that's possible but that's what it seems like.

If it were an iCloud issue it would have popped up on the other devices. It can't be an issue with the bank because I have 2 cards from different banks. The only issue is with the iPad. Fortunately as you have mentioned it does not cause any purchase or billing issue when using to buy something. But it is annoying.

Good evening papjo,

Welcome to the Support Communities!

If you are unable to edit the billing address for a card you are using with Apple Pay on your iPad, try following the steps in the resource below. If the information still won't update, remove the card, and add it back with the correct billing information.

Manage the cards that you use with Apple Pay

Update your billing and contact information

Learn how to update your billing and shipping information for the cards that you use with Apple Pay.

iPhone or iPad

  • To change your billing information, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, tap a card, then tap what you want to update.
  • To update your email address, phone number, and shipping address, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then choose what you want to update.

Remove a card

If you need to, you can remove a card from your device. You can keep up to eight cards on a device.

To remove a card that you use on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, tap the card that you want to remove, then tap Remove Card.

Set up Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac

Here's what you need to use Apple Pay in supported regions:

You can add up to eight cards on any device. If you want to use Apple Pay with more than one device, you need to add your card to each device

Add a card on your iPad

  1. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.
  2. Tap Add Credit or Debit Card.
  3. Follow the steps to add a new card. If you're asked to add the card that you use with iTunes, just enter its security code.
  4. Tap Next. Your bank or card issuer will verify your information and decide if you can add your card to Apple Pay. If your bank or issuer needs more information to verify your card, they'll ask you for it. When you have the information, go back to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay and tap your card.
  5. After your bank or issuer verifies your card, tap Next. Then start using Apple Pay.

Take care.

Yes if you delete credit cards but then add the same ones back the old address will always return. Something related to your contact card will permanently attach the first address associated with the credit card. That’s why I believe it’s somehow related to an iCloud corruption related to Contacts.

I have to warn you that it may appear as iOS 11 fixed this for you, don’t be surprised if it returns after an upcoming update. I thought my issue was solved and then came iOS 11. For me I may have a problem if and when I move because my current address is the first one associated with the new credit card. If that occurs I’ll try the deletion of my contact card and creating a new one.

Hi papjo,

Nope, this problem still exists for me on iOS 11.0.1 on my 6s. Turns out that iOS now tells you which contact card it is using and for me, the name refers to an old contact card I had used as my identity that was renamed/deleted long ago. Even creating a new contact card with the same old name doesn't help. I suspect that the problem is that this contact card exists on my phone and not iCloud contacts. However, a save will save this information and a restore will bring it back. Even if I tell Contacts to only search for contacts on my phone, Contacts won't show the old name and so there is no way to change it. Strangely enough, Apple Pay has no problem referencing it, however. It is truly a ghost contact that can't be removed but Apple Pay seems to have no problem picking it up.

I'm having the exact same issue and it's been driving me nuts. Only happens on my iPad and only with this one card. The address it's populating for the billing address is not valid and exists nowhere on any of my devices. It existed two years ago as part of my contact card, but that has long since been deleted and replaced with a new address.

I was thinking I might have to do a restore, but it looks like you've done that already and that doesn't fix the issue either.
